It's official -- FInal Fantasy on GameCube (AND GBA!)

Posted by me, at GameCubeXL

No, you are not dreaming, Final Fantasy is BACK on a Nintendo Console -- actually 2 Nintendo consoles -- GBA and Nintendo GameCube! The new came from Nikkei's (Japanese official gaming source) website:

OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nintendo Co. (7974) has agreed to resume procuring the popular "Final Fantasy" video game software for its game consoles from Square Co. (9620) after a five-year hiatus, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday.

The big news in this is not only is Square coming back, but the details -- Hiroshi Yamauchi himself is funding Square's return, by virtue of Fund Q, the fund set aside to help spark game development on GameCube.

The deal calls on the Square affiliate to produce software allowing users of two Nintendo consoles -- the GameCube and Game Boy Advance -- to play together by the end of the year.

Go ahead, clean the crap off your pants, then come back.. ;) Yes -- TOGETHER.

So, GameCubers and GBAers alike have something to look foward too playing Final Fantasy on NGC and GBA. Keep in mind that this HAS, I repeat HAS been confirmed officially by NCL.

Is square giving full-fledged support to Gamecube? Like just like PS2? If so, this is great news for Gamecube owners!

cubeman420 03-08-2002 04:01 PM

YES!!!! Finally :D

Jason1 03-08-2002 04:02 PM

WHAT will be out be the end of the year?

Final Fantasy X?

Xantar 03-08-2002 04:05 PM

This was already posted at PGC. I posted the link to that story in Jin's topic.

But nobody read it. I'm so ignored! :( :baby:

*wonders how long it will take for a GT staff writer to post this on the front page*

That would be Pimp if GCN did get FFX... but FFXI is my guess for the game

Drunk Hobbit 03-08-2002 04:15 PM

I don't like Square...but it does mean GameCube sales will increase...which means more people will want to develop for it...which means more games I like...yay. Hmmm, might try one of the FF games for GBA though.

magus113 03-08-2002 04:16 PM

thats great that GC and GBA are going to get some games.
It's about time that square lightens up a bit on nintendo.
they could probably remake ff7 with better graphics or a single player version of ff11 instead of an online one

Ridley 03-08-2002 04:19 PM

Square's making games for GCN and Hiroshi Yamauchi is actually funding the return?

*checks calendar*

*sees it isn't April 1*

*has a massive heart attack*

All I have to say is thank the big guy in the clouds. Lando Calrissian thank you!

;)

DeathsHand 03-08-2002 04:37 PM

That's awesome... I hope they still support PS2 nice and good though...

Hopefully AGB will get some nice lil' games... imagine a new 2D chrono game... hmm *rubs chin*

Hey I can dream can't I? :p

Although if this came from some kind of magazine, it COULD be an april fools joke since magazines are a month ahead (april comes out in March)...

just like that Sonic in SSB:M was EGM's april fools joke... *cough*

Edit: http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories...853838,00.html

Well OK now I believe it a bit more... :D

"but FFXI is my guess for the game"

But FFXI uses PS2's HD thing... NGC doesn't have one... how would they get it to work all nice and good

Maybe they will bring that "Final Fantasy X International" or whatever to NGC... and Kingdom Hearts (the disney/Square game)...

Ric 03-08-2002 04:45 PM

SHAT Grrr language filter.

I am rather pleased at that, moreso because it means that Squaresoft will be developing for GC and my hope for a compilation game of all the Squaresoft RPG's on SNES draws a step closer and also that other franchises will be available. I personally prefer the FF's of old to the newer versions but hey mabey my opinion will cahnge. Yeah.... Zelda FF Zelda FF Zelda FF Zelda FF.... yeah. Well done Hiroshi Yamauchi, you made them try harder to impress you, hopefully a higher standard of game will be delivered.

Idiot 03-08-2002 05:06 PM

Step 1: SquareSoft diggitaly re-masters Final Fantasy I-VI and creates a double GBA cartridge pack.

Step 2: SquareSoft diggitaly re-masters Final Fantasy I-XI for GameCube in a 3-disk set, with GBA connections, so that you can share save files for Final Fantasy I-VI on GameCube and GBA.

Step 3:Continue to release forthcoming Final Fantasy installments for Nintendo formats, including Final Fantasy X, XI and XII.

Well, that's what I'd like to happen, but it probably won't....:( ,...still, I can dream....

Anyway, if this is true, then the tide has well and truly turned. This represents a hug marketing coup for Nintendo. SEGA was the first to relent, closely followed by Capcom and Namco, and now SquareSoft has joined the fray, well, who knows what may happen, but excpect developers in their hundreds to flock back to Nintendo. Now, Nintendo has four of the worlds top five developers tucked under their belts. (SquareSoft, Rarware, SEGA and Nintendo themselves, the fith being Bungie, which Microsoft blagged.)
On another note, perhaps it might attract back developers who push the GameCube away, because they got their hands bitten with the Nintendo 64, such as Konami. (Metal Gear Solid for the Nintendo GameCube, anyone?)

Also, his may kill off the 'short, but sweet' stratergy that runs around Nintendo at time of writing. With SquareSoft, and the influence that it brings to attract developers back to the Nintendo GameCube, relieving the games drought, Nintendo may have the time it needs to construct it's revelatory videogaming epics. We may yet see a 70 hour, realistic Zelda, and a humongous Mario game, before the Nintendo GameCube goes to the Great Attic of Forgotten Games Consoles in the Sky.....

Angrist 03-08-2002 05:10 PM

Is this confirmed????? Where's the source (not the XL site)???

:D:D

Idiot 03-08-2002 05:26 PM

I've just rememberd Enix, and their Dragon Warrior titles! (Which still outsell Final Fantasy 10 to 1 in Japan, and are rumoured for GC and GBA.) Imagine: Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior and Pokemon on the same formats. (Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Game Boy Advance.) RPG heaven has opened it's pearly gates to Nintendo it seems...

Joeiss 03-08-2002 05:30 PM

Wow. I couldn't care less about Square... But I know anout 7 people who will purchase a GCN now because of this news! Great news for Nintendo fans!

D-Man 03-08-2002 05:30 PM

Angrist: yes it is confirmed, just check out ign. :D

Yep... it's almost sealed for me... now all I need is to hear it for myself from Nintendo or Square... and not IGN saying that NoA confirmed it ;)

I just hope they don't stop supporting PS2...

I also hope they don't release FFX with neat extras... but not enough to make me wanna pay 50 bucks to get it again ;)

Err, if they release FFX on NGC...

Ginkasa 03-08-2002 06:10 PM

YES!!!!

Umm...

Cloud is from SOLDIER...he has no feelings, until he meets Aeris. :p

And Xantar, it's pretty hard to post news when the others hardly post. ;)

Gamer 03-08-2002 06:20 PM

Aww, finally, now my buddies with a PS2 who say that their system is better because of FF have nothing to use against me , muahahahha....erm, right, so, yeah this is great news, not like i didnt see it coming... ;)

BreakABone 03-08-2002 06:22 PM

Well this is great news for Cube owners..

As for me, unless they plan on making a new Mario RPG (even though I believe Intelligent Systems made the better game)

Yes they have they've got GTA 3. Damn, we need that too.

Yoda9864 03-08-2002 06:44 PM

In the words of Mr. Burns..."Excellent!" I just want an rpg for my GBA. Drowns in his own drool....

Blix 03-08-2002 07:19 PM

This is great news. Altough I'm not a Square fan, I'm happy cause that means that other developers might come back to Nintendo.

Revival 03-08-2002 07:34 PM

This is 100% confirmed, and GameCube XL is a reliable source - I don't post news there often, and when I do, it has to be confirmed, I refuse to post a rumour.

Also, the article is updated, and now includes the Reuters article, which should be even more convincing.

NO WAY!

I liked Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars a million times better. It's one of my favorite games.

SamosR20 03-08-2002 09:22 PM

Posted at IGN (and my site) it says that Final Fantasy Unlimited has been under the works since October for an "unknown system". They think this will be the next installment on GCN and AGB. BTW, ff unlimited is an jap anime.

Well, maybe but the pic at IGN is just the concept art.

JoeCool007 03-08-2002 10:50 PM

Muhahahahha.....

As I shed one tear in delight as such I have though of this day for many a...um.....year.... I go and give my little black cube above my television a hug, as i wisper into it's fan duct, "you are now loved by all, huraah my friend.....huraah.." as i back away and put a giant smile on my face...."It has been a long time comming, tis wonderful" then I went and made some popcorn and watched Wonder Years reruns....Ahem....

The point is that Square is here, i've waited so long, now im happy, nuff said... I love my cube.. Good day

Blackmane 03-09-2002 02:41 AM

Oh my, when I saw the article, I thought I was dreaming. I have considered long and hard to get a PS2 JUST FOR FINAL FANTASY GAMES! Now I dont have to shell out $300 just to play them. I am so happy. Gamecube has now another added bonus to get more gamers buying it.

Angrist 03-09-2002 06:56 AM

First I thought it could be a joke or just a rumour... but it's true! :D

I think this isn't so much of good news for Gamecube as bad news for sony. Now people don't need a Ps2 to get final fantasy! but the key factor here is if square is making exclusives for nintendo or not. If they do, it'll give people (the casual, uneducated gamers) a reason to buy a Gamecube over a Ps2. so lets hope for some original exclusives:D

Gambit_X 03-09-2002 11:05 AM

I thought the deal with Sony and Square was that all FF games released on next-gen consoles had to be released on the PS2, although not restricting other consoles from getting them as well.

But that's just what I thought I heard.

Anyway, yeah, this is awesome news. Now that Square is devving for Cube... Chrono Break anyone?

*everyone starts laughing*

Hey, I can dream, can't I? Look, it's almost as tangible as this burger... now I must gobble it up... :burger:

Revival 03-09-2002 11:18 AM

Yeah, Chrono Break would be awesome too :D

gekko 03-09-2002 11:35 AM

Good, I guess. Will bring people to Gamecube.

I just hope they can make a FF that doesn't suck.

Yeah, I do too.

Ric 03-09-2002 12:18 PM

Like I said before I prefer the Final Fantasy's of old, the new ones, going all futuristicy, running across pre rendered screens, not really my cup of tea but hey, they may grow on me.

fingersman 03-09-2002 12:56 PM

That's good news I guess.
Woopee
