Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
Dude, that completly sucks. Makes me wonder if the scenario in the movie day after tomorrow could really happen, maybe not the next ice age but the tornado's and whatnot.

Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
Unfortunately, thats the way mother nature works. Sometimes nature tries to balance things out in the worst ways possible.

Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
The loss of 40,000 people so far is horrible, but I think it's even more horrible that these people did not have a warning in advance. The Tsunami that hit the coast was generated in the ocean several hours before it reached land, and it was moving 500mph by the time it hit the land. Most countries would have picked up the giant wave, and evacuated the coast. Thousands of lives would have been saved had the coast been evacuated, just an hour or two before the Tsunami hit.
But, it's just like Florida. If you live on The Ring Of Fire, or below Mt. St. Helens, don't be surprised if mother nature throws a curve ball in your direction. It's just like what I say about Florida: "You can build your houses back up next year, but don't be surprised or complaining after next hurricane season." Hopefully someone gets the latest technology down there, so a tragedy like this never happens again. =/ |
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
current toll: 60000...:( sri lanka and southern india is in shambles...including all the tourist destinations....phuket...bali...smaller islands got completely washed away. i had relatives living in areas which got hit, but im glad theyre all alright. bodies are still floating up, bloated and in pieces. its really sad. Malaysia can finance its own medical help and rebuilding of the coastal area ...we have more than enough medical personel from around the country....but i feel the poorer countries which got hit really need our help. There are still after shocks every now and then. Its scary that things like that happen because ever since i was a child, i was taught in geography that malaysia is one of the very few countries which was free from natural disasters other than thunder storms or floods(we dont hzave quakes/typhoons/volcanos/etc.). The earthquake was from a neighbouring country and the tidal wave caused so many deaths in our nothern islands. Its a real shock to many malaysians cause things like that have never in history happened. i really pity the islands which solely rely on tourism to survive, its going to be hard to pick up the pieces

They also say as a general thing, if you're ever near a coastline and a strong quake lasting more than 20 seconds occurs, it's a good idea to seek higher ground... (^-^ |
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
At least the deaths are the result of natural causes instead of man-made. It's still sad. :(
|
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
i dont think they were expecting it at all.....
|
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
This is quite the disaster. The sea is very unforgiving. I'm sure there are many restless souls about in those areas where so many have died. It's very depressing.
|
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
poor people...at least now the governemtn will look more into detection of natural disasters...it's a shame it hasn't in the past. R.I.P all those who have perished.
|
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
The disease in these areas is going to be bad if they have that many bodies unattended. That has the potential to be more deadly than the Tsunamis...
|
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
It's expected to rise over 70,000 :(

Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
Well all of these countries should feel much better now, as I just saw on TV that France has pledged $136,000 to the relief effort...
In case you didn't get it, that was DRIPPING with sarcasm. And people wonder why we hate France... |

$136,000??? and they were making fun of the US's $20 Million you could rebuild one of the ocean side bungalos for the $136,000.... wow good job france... other horrible natural disasters The Great Tangshan Earthquake, 1976 it was in china and killed over 240,000 people (some reports say 655,000 people dead, and 780,000 injured, dunno why the differences so big) .... I doubt this will top that... it's easy for a lot of people to die in one area when it is so over crowded. The Great China Earthquake of 1556 The worse natural disaster in recorded history, at least in terms of lives lost, was caused by an earthquake in Hausien in the Shensi Province of China in 1556. The earthquake devastated 98 counties and eight provinces of Central China. The destruction spanned an area of 500 miles, and in some counties the average death toll was 60 percent of the population. A total of 830,000 people lost their lives, most of them from the collapse of poorly constructed houses. The magnitude of this earthquake has been estimated to be from 8.0 to 8.3 on the Richter scale. |
Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000

Not only has the quake taken thousand of lives, but it may have also shortened days by a fraction of a second and caused the planet to wobble on its axis.

You can't seriously believe the world is going down the drain because of one tsunami.

Re: Asian death toll reaches 44,000
This is something that the guys over at the GameFAQs forums made up.....I'm going to hell for laughing at this......the Fresh Prince Phuket Parody...
I'd like to tell you a story all about how I was neck deep in water and almost drowned It'll only take a moment and you'll never forget the time I got TSUNAMI'D in a town called Phuket. On vacation in Asia, everything fine My family and I, payin' the weather no mind Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin', all cool Then I saw the water churnin' in the motel pool 'Cause a couple of plates that were under the ground Bumped into each other while they moved around They started one little quake and we all went pale 'Cause it ranked a nine-point-oh on the Richter scale. I swam and dived all through the 3rd world country And the risin’ tides couldn’t swallow up me I got on a raft and I got off the shore I turned on my camera and said time to find a higher floor Outta the water, yo this is still bad, drinking muddy water out of a broken glass If this is what the people of Phuket livin’ like, Hmm this boy’s getting out tonight! I whistled for a cab and when it came near The driver was submerged like he'd dived off a pier If anything I'd say that this cab was wet but I thought yo forget it get me out'a Phuket! I pulled up to Red Cross bout seven or eight I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo, tidal swell, comin' lata" Looked at my life preserver, I was finally set Dove in my raft as the Captain of Phuket |
