Re: Last movies you saw
I enjoyed the new Predator movie. I called it a popcorn-fun romp. I'd give it 3 stars if I had stars to give.

Re: Last movies you saw
Pride & Glory. With Edward Norton and Colin McFarrel.
I really liked it, I'll give it a 7.5/10. It's a story about a family of cops who find out there are dirty cops in their battalion. |
Re: Last movies you saw
The Usual Suspects - Been attempting to see this one for years but something always happens. Kept having to shield myself from "the twist." Not much of one it turns out. Just an unreliable narrator, so you can't really go back and rewatch to see things you didn't catch the first time suddenly fall into place. A shame. Still enjoyed it though.
Drawing a comic heavy on an Aztec aesthetic so in addition to viewing a number of documentaries, watched The Emperor's New Groove (Inca) and The Road to El Dorado (a mix of Pre-Columbian cultures). Saw bits of both before but believe this was the first time I saw them in their entirety. Both fun but think I liked TRoED more. Plus it has one of the sexiest animated females ever. :stud: Despicable Me was pretty cute. "It's so fluffy!" Not much else to say. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - I feel bad for the folks who haven't read the book. They don't explain the mirror at all. I didn't even remember what it was until after perusing IMDb's board. Was it touched upon in the 6th movie? They also left out the whole "Voldemort" being taboo thing. Seemed important. Anyway, the tone was nice and it had good pacing though not too much actually happens. Made up for with some nice character moments. |

The "Voldemort" taboo is mentioned in a deleted scene shown on the dvd/blu-ray. No idea why they would take that out. |

And I love the return of various elements that are important to the movie, but they completely ignored during the others. |

Re: Last movies you saw
Deathly Hallows pt 1 was my least favorite of all the films. The entirety of the movie could have been 30-40 minutes and no one would have skipped a beat. Also, we REALLY could have done without the horribly awkward dancing scene... ew.

Re: Last movies you saw
Tangled. 9/10.
Wow, it might be the most enjoyable Disney movie ever. It was funny, adventurous, romantic..... and the graphics really added to the experience. The horse running over rooftops and racing over the bridge for example... Just awesome. Now I just regret that I didn't see it in 3D cinema. :( |
Re: Last movies you saw
Scott Pilgrim vs The World - Probably one of the more original movies I've seen. Great subtle satire sprinkled throughout. "Their first album was better than their first album" was a favorite. Brilliant direction, editing, and sound. I started naming the games they pulled sound effects from toward the end.
Only problem is the lack of any real character development, making a repeat viewing only interesting to catch more of the satire and references. 7/10 |
Re: Last movies you saw
I also watched Scott Pilgrim, it was on HBO a couple nights ago. I actually didn't like it, even though I thought I would love it. All of the video game references just seemed to be there for the sake of being a video game reference.
I got the feeling it was a movie made by hipsters, with hipsters in it, for hipsters. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Eh, I've seen that criticism a lot. Many of the characters fit that definition but it mostly makes fun of the culture such as the example Prof gave. When I think hipster movie I think Napoleon Dynamite or Juno or any of those movies with hand-drawn titles. Of course hipsters are just the in-thing to bash on right now. Previously it was the emos. I'm just waiting for the next sub-culture to emerge for everyone else to hate.

Hipsters actively try to put you down in regular conversation. It's not hard to be annoyed by them. :ohreilly: I think I could probably watch Scott Pilgrim and enjoy it somewhat, I just thought the references would be a little more cleverly used. |
Re: Last movies you saw

I primarily enjoyed it for the editing and action. It was the closest thing Edgar Wright's done since his show, Spaced, which I quite liked. A lot of quick editing and movie references in that. |
Re: Last movies you saw
I was behind a hipster in a record store and he asked for some band I've never heard of, and for a Japanese import only record. He didn't seem phased when he learned they didn't have it of course. But I just think he wanted people to hear him ask for it.

Re: Last movies you saw
I watched Monsters (2010).
The atmosphere was great, the main characters were likable, the acting was good... The only boring part was (ironically) the monsters. |
Re: Last movies you saw

You liked that movie? Ahhh, me and some friends couldn't really stand it. We made jokes before hand like "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if someone made a love-story that was just set in some type of alien invasion?" And that's basically what it fucking was. I was let down. :lolz: |
Re: Last movies you saw
Yeah I can totally understand that. I expected a lot more monsters. Different types, more action, more suspense.
But I also expected a story about a guy and a girl... I enjoyed that part. The woman was beautiful (and cute) by the way. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Thor
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The Asgard bits felt like a more magical action-paced version of Game Of Thrones which I've been enjoying. The Earth bits were just ok. There was one annoying character who I heard they added more of after she did well with test audiences. Bleh. |
Re: Last movies you saw
The Illusionist (the recent animated one)
Sad and beautiful. Almost without dialogue like The Triplets of Belleville (which makes sense here since there's a language barrier between the two main characters). One thing that stuck out was that the camera angles were all static and reused over and over for the interiors. I wonder if that was to better concentrate on the character animation, since that was superb. But it also meant there were no closeups so you felt removed from the story a bit. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Agora. 7/10.
Interesting times. Shows how scary a mob can be when they know the government is behind them. |
Re: Last movies you saw
TRON Legacy. 8/10. Awesome. Why do I own The Matrix sequels but not this?

Animal Kingdom, a really interesting Australian film. I highly recommend it, and its streaming on American Netflix. 9/10 if I had to score it. |
Re: Last movies you saw
My Bloody Valentine - A good old fashioned tits n' blood horror movie (obviously made for 3D). Pretty well done for what it was, and it does a smart job of questioning "who done it" until the very end. (I guessed it, but wasn't positive)
7/10 Interesting note, if you stream on Netflix the "thumb" images when you fast forward are actually from the ORIGINAL movie, not the remake. Big CON: It starred Jaime King and she kept her shirt on for the entire movie... BOOOOOOOOO!!!!! |
Re: Last movies you saw
You cant have a horror movie with out boobs!!!

Re: Last movies you saw
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights
While I liked bits and pieces of the previous DTV movies I think this one is probably the strongest as a whole. A nice anthology that all ties together. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Black Swan
Pretty good, but not as great as it was made out to be. Probably my least favorite Aronofsky film. Though I am glad it didn't turn out to be a Perfect Blue remake as I expected it to be. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Some awesome visuals. Decent story; more a cool idea. And you get Spidey and Joker together. Sunshine Great up until the end whenit becomes a slasher flick. Gets a couple points back for it being Mark Strong though. |
Re: Last movies you saw
I saw Super 8. It was really good.

In response to Tooth
Sunshine is a great film that may fall a bit flat at the end but all in all is a great movie. As for GL, I would have to say Wonder Woman is a better film. Characters are more enjoyable and Nathan Fillion does play a bigger part |
Re: Last movies you saw
Seems like the general consensus is that WW has been the best of these movies. Perhaps I need to rewatch it but it didn't do much for me on my first viewing.

Re: Last movies you saw
Paul
Wasn't particularly funny. Now I enjoy seeing young earth creationists being made fun of as much as the next guy but it was done in what I thought was a heavy-handed and not at all humorous manner. Felt off. Paul himself was pretty much the only really likeable and funny character. At first it was quite hard not to just picture Seth Rogen every time he talked...very hard actually...but eventually Paul's voice was Paul's voice...and just happened to bare a very strong resemblance to Seth Rogen's. A whole lot of sci-fi references and it was nice seeing Invincible and Brit comic stuff show up though. |
Re: Last movies you saw
The Invention of Lying
Very interesting premise. Felt like so much more could have been done with it though. An enjoyable experiment, not sure if so much as a movie. Daybreakers Another movie where thought so much more could have been done with the concept. Would have made an interesting television series seeing all aspects of a vampire driven society. Rango I think this might be the prettiest ugly movie ever made. Drags a bit in the middle but overall a good time. Everything is just so ugly....but pretty....so much detail to oogle. Really liked how the human characters were done. Wouldn't mind seeing a movie like that. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Best Worst Movie
Documentary about the people involved with making Troll 2, which some consider one of the worst films of all time. It's very sweet in a sad way. Now I guess I may have to actually watch the movie, but maybe not. It looks terrible after all. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Avatar
A good case on why you should always skip breakfast. I liked it. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Been watching more movies now that I can view them in better than youtube quality.
Cold Souls Quite liked it. Very Charlie Kaufmanesque. And you have Paul Giamatti as Paul Giamatti. Perfect casting. Stranger Than Fiction Favorite thing I've seen Will Ferrell in. The Princess Bride I got tired of seeing references to this movie online so finally watched (though a number of scenes were familiar...think I might have seen as a wee lad). Fun but don't really get the cult following it has. Gattaca Interesting concept. S1m0ne Liked Gattaca so thought I would see Niccol's next movie. Only vaguely remembered the commercials for it. Assumed it would be heavy on the sci-fi like Gattaca and be a thriller where the virtual girl comes to life. Nope. A goofy satire that really didn't work. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more knowing what sort of movie it was going in. The Road Couldn't not see Rick and Carl from The Walking Dead as the main characters. Seems like a zombie apocalypse would be ideal. That way humans would at least band together against something instead of everyone being enemies as in this film. |

Speaking of... Mere hours after watching the movie this was on reddit's main page: http://www.reddit.com/r/fffffffuuuuu...inconceivable/
Just think how many mildly humorous in-jokes I've been missing all this time. |
Re: Last movies you saw
I saw Horrible Bosses. It was like The Hangover meets Office Space with a couple of really funny gags and two super-star cameos that tied it all together.

Re: Last movies you saw
Cave of Forgotten Dreams (in 3D!)
So now the only 3D movies I have seen are Avatar and a Werner Herzog documentary, go figure... This one was good. Fairly straight-forward exploration of these caves in France that have the world's oldest cave paintings in them, from about 10,000 years ago. Some poetic analysis from the great Herzog's voice as well. Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest If you're a fan of the group, it's definitely worth checking out. I never knew most of the stuff because I never really looked into it, but it's very interesting. Well made by Michael Rapaport. |
