The studies aren't false. They don't apply to everyone, but they aren't false.
Not everyone who smokes weed moves on, but many people get introduced into the world of drugs with weed. Most 13-16 year old kids, the age that they would typically do weed for the first time, do it because one of their friends does. The same friends who could easily talk them into doing a harder drug, or they work their way down the line. Friend of a friend, start smoking with them, then moving on, eventually finding the hard drug users. Smoking weed doesn't make you want crack, but it's usually smoking weed that begins the cycle which will eventually lead them to hard drugs. At one point they had 2 choices, smoke weed, or not. Choosing no means the dumbass (read: drug user) friend goes off with someone else for a smoke. Chances are they wouldn't keep asking him, and he'd probably never do any drug, much less a hard drug. If he chooses yes, he smokes weed, and he's much much more likely to go to hard drugs. As for addiction, you don't need to constantly do it. People who smoke a cig a day can be addicted, just like those who smoke a pack. Like any other addictions, they grow over time. You and your buddies are still young, you can be addicted and still not smoke constantly. There's also a very good chance they're not addicted. Not everyone who drinks or smokes is addicted, not everyone who does drugs is addicted. But many are. If you continue to do a drug there's a good chance you're addicted. While you may not do it daily, there is something that is pushing you to do it again, the start of an addiction. Whether it escalates from there or not really depends if they continue to do it. The only drug you could really make an argument against doing but not having any addiction to is heroine. If you don't possess a certain gene, you don't get addicted to heroine. |
I hate debates...
That cycle can't really be proven to actually get people doing harder drugs, although yes doing weed can open up access to harder drugs because, as I said, SOMEONE down the line gets it from a shady drug dealer... But if that can be used as a thing against pot, you could also say that after kids try weed and find out it's not this crazy evil bad thing that people made it out to be, they could be blinded by that and would be more likely to think that harder drugs aren't as bad as people make them out to be either... I guess weed could be considered dangerous to people who don't do their research and would do a harder drug if offered one... And I'm not saying harder drugs should be more accepted by the public, but I mean cigarettes and Alcohol are just about as dangerous as weed, the only big problem with it is it's image... "You and your buddies are still young, you can be addicted and still not smoke constantly." First I already told you I only smoked 4 times and then stopped... And that was back in August... And when I talk about people not smoking a lot, I'm talking going weeks or months without smoking once... And not having it bother them... And turning down the opportunity to do it... Then eventually doing it again because the opportunity came up and they want to... *shrugs* |
My friends actually do smoke weed multiple times a day...Like, they get really pissy if they run out of weed for a day or two. If they aren't addicted, then I don't know what addiction is. I know they'll never do cocaine or anything though, they're smart enough to know that....I think...

I used to smoke weed a couple of times a week. Some of my friends moved on to other dugs, I just quit. I smoke occasionally, but not too often.
Beer is my drug of choice now. And DsH, countries cannot legalize marijuana, or else they would be violated some UN law... But they can decriminalize it if they really wanted to. |
Didn't a province in Canada legalize possesion of half an ounce of marijuana? I'm almost sure I heard that...

I normally prefer Sleeman's DARK over Light Beer...as a refreshment when it's hot, however, I do some Light beer or non-dark stuff like Canadian and Export. Jackass ;)

I like wine better than beer, there aren't many liquors that I don't like... I probably haven't tasted them all. :D
I don't smoke or use (soft) drugs. |
If your looking for a gateway drug, take a look at alcohol. It is proven to be more addictive than marajuana, do more damage than marajuana to your brain (most effects of marajuana to the synapses will disappear once use stops. Marajuana, or more accurately THC, does not kill brain cells, unlike alcohol). I would challenge you to name a drug user that doesn't also drink, and/or didn't drink before starting use of harder drugs.
Marajuana is far less dangerous than alcohol, being that you would have to consume nearly your body weight in order to overdose. Marajuana is illegal and alcohol is legal for basically one reason: Those that made the laws back then drank, and marajuana was considered a "slum" drug, much like opium. BTW, I do not smoke marajuana and have not smoked weed in 3 years and never regularly. |
While Canadian beer commercials are funny and it's pretty much a part of our culture, i'm kind of embarrassed at times from the way we act towards beer(like it descended from heaven)
My mom is a social worker. She has to deal with a lot of families who are just making it by on well fare because the dad and mom's are alcoholics. Beer ****s you over just like pot and makes people do stupid ****. You don't read many incidents where teens die from smoking and driving. Beer's addictive(quite addictive). Weed isn't. I don't drink beer cuz i don't like the taste. I also don't do pot. but, if i were to start doing one or the other I'd pick weed. I get buzzed and high on other things in life. I don't need to ruin my body to do that. Oh, and i live about 4 hours east of Vancouver in the Okanagan Valley. Basically, everyone here does weed. If a police man sees some dude smoking a big joint in the park or on the street they're just happy they aren't on crack or drinking and driving. I can't see the governments reasoning when it comes to wee legalization. Alcohol is much more dangerous. Cigarettes are just as harmful to your lungs(more harmful considering how much users smoke it) and it's highly addictive. It doesn't make sense to me. A non addictive drug isn't legal but alcohol(which is just as much a drug) is addictive and it causes people to do stupid stuff. |
I GOT A NEW FAVORITE DRINK!!!! SMIRNOFF ICE!!!! BEST...DRINK...EVER!

The direct effects marijuana has on you isn't that bad...but being high can lead to an unlimited amount of dangerous situations. I've heard of and seen people do much worse things when high than when drunk. An old friend of mine (I might have considered him my best friend) attacked quite a few people once (including me) when he started doing marijuana. It changed the person he was completely...he was like one of the nicest person I knew, and when I tried hard to make him stop the weed, he eventually flipped out and hit me with his hockey stick. It was one of the saddest times of my life...I had to hold him down, he was hyperventilating and minutes later he calmed and I took him home and helped his mom take him to the hospital :( I've had a lot of friends over the years who drank a lot, but they never acted like he did...they didn't change like he did.
People can show me statistics and crap like that, but I'll always feel more comfortable seeing someone close to me with a beer in their hand instead of a joint. |
I've never heard of someone being that violent before  Everytime I've been around people who were high they were just reeeeaaaaally 'mellow'... or whatever you'd call it... And they definately wouldn't attack people...
But I guess weed (and alcohol for that matter) can have different effects on different people (and there are also different kinds of weed)... Because I know there are people who get violent when they're drunk... |
Weed and alcohol have different effects on different people. Stu, it sounds like your friends body just didnt' react well with weed. That's very rare though. Both aren't good, but in our society beer's just accepted as being better.
