Also known as High School Musical 3. It wasn't as painful as expected. Secretly I enjoyed it, but don't let my sisters know. :(

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Really incredible! People have described as "the best video game move ever made that's not actually based on a video game" and I guess I'd agree. Just a great movie in general though. Unique film making by Edgar Wright...Probably the most interesting I've seen Michael Cera to date as well...Fun.

So. fucking. Epic.
So good. I don't think a single person left the theatre for any reason when the movie was playing.

Everything about this movie was great. The plot, the visuals, the explanations of things, the game scenes, the fight scenes, just...everything.

The only thing I can ask you, is why are you currently not watching this movie in 3D?
I also don't understand how all of the reviews for this movie are such crap.

Killers

A fun movie with a rather weak ending that left a sour taste in my mouth. Its a less-charming and fun Mr and Mrs. Smith and the leads don't have the energy/charisma.

Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everybody Talking About Him?)

Pretty good documentary about one of my favorite music artists of all time. Lots of great footage and information I didn't know about. Fun stuff about that general late 60's early 70's music scene if you're into that. Interviews from Robin Williams, Terry Gilliam, Brain Wilson, Randy Newman, Eric Idle, and many others. Streaming on Netflix.

Winter's Bone

Very good. No surprise that Jennifer Lawrence is getting a lot of attention for it...she's great in it. Interesting story as well.

The Brood

Pretty good early Cronenberg horror/psychology movie. Gets a little bit ridiculous, but the horror scenes are generally well done and scary. A bit dialogue heavy, but still good

I love you, Phillip Morris

It stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.
It's (a true story) about a con artist (Carrey) who gets thrown in prison, and falls in love with an inmate (McGregor). The basis of the movie is that Carrey is constantly breaking out of jail in various ways to be reunited with Mcgregor.

This is a movie I suggest everyone to watch. It's funny, and entertaining. Plus it's worth watching just to see the shit this guy did to get out of prison.

I enjoyed it, though the breaking out really only deals with like the last 30 minutes or so of the movie.

The Other Guys

A funny cop spoof with some incredibly hilarious moments and a few incredibly miss moments. Mark Wahlberg is hilarious, and this movie plus Date Night has me convinced he should do more comedy. Will Ferrell steals the movie with the hot wife gag. I'd say rent it.

The A Team

Stupid. Things explode. Bradley Cooper. Liam Neeson who may be the best worst action actor since Steven Seagal. This was fluff at its best, a "popcorn flick." As far as stupid popcorn flicks go, this one was okay in my book. Also a renter.

Easy A

This movie was awesome. Emma Stone is so hot. Let's take a moment and drool.....

The movie is going for the quirk-appeal of Juno and it totally works. I laughed at this cute, pro-sex movie. It was a nice change of pace for a comedy. And Emma Stone as a strong female role was nice to see, we need more chicks in comedy.

The Town (rewatch)

I feel like a re-watch reveals the "averageness" of this film. The second action sequence is intense and stellar and will have you on the edge of your seat. The cinematography is gripping and awesome too. But when I think hard about it, I think that Gone Baby Gone might be the better film.

Salt

The Bourne Identity with Angelina Jolie. This is NOT essential viewing, and this falls into the mediocre action movie category. With no especially memorable action sequences this movie leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't even think you can compare the two movies.

My understanding is that the Coen Brother's take on True Grit was more in tune with the novel whereas the original changed things up a bit. I cannot say since I have not read the novel. I can say I have seen the original movie and I think Hailee Steinfeld defined the role as Mattie Ross.

I'd kill to watch Black Swan, but it opens in theaters at the end of February. And no, I do not want to download it.

I watched Inception for the second time a few days ago, and it was even better than my first viewing.

And I watched Shutter Island a few days before that. Loved it.

Last year was all Leonardo DiCaprio. This year seems like it's going to be Natalie Portman.

I don't have a formal list, but off the top of my head...

2001: A Space Odyssey
Metrolis (original)
Nosferatu (original)
The 400 Blows
The Seventh Seal
Apocalypse Now
Wizard of Oz
Lord of the Rings
Citizen Kane

Keep in mind, this is about conception, not necessarily the greatest movie of all time.

This was a nod towards its conception as a movie, and not a story. The entire undertaking was enormous. Its as if Jackson completed the film on a dare. To film three, three hour long movies (much longer in director's cuts), at the same time, and for it all to come out so seamlessly and iconic is a triumph of what is possible in film.

From the risk that New Line took, to the product that was achieved, Lord of the Rings stands alone when you consider the equation of balls+execution+vision.

Something of this level was never done before, and likely will never be done again.

The Town:

Pretty good. Very well acted by a good cast, but generally not a believable story. I know some of this stuff could possibly go down, but I didn't really buy it. Still pretty entertaining though.

Exit Through the Gift Shop:

Pretty cool, maybe fake-ish documentary that is still funny and entertaining. Street art can be pretty rad.

Nattevagten (Nightwatch). 8/10.
Great Danish thriller about a guy who just got a job at a morgue, which is then visited by a psychopath killer.
The most terrifying scenes are when nothing happens and the main character just walks through the morgue at night.
If you don't mind subtitles, I highly recommend this.

Care to elaborate on the conception of the film a bit further?

I just watched The Last Exorcism. Like Paranormal Activity, this film will require you to:
A) suspend your disbelief
B) let the film take you on a ride
C) be okay with a minimal number of special effects
D) be open to ambiguous endings

All-in-all it might be a cut above Paranormal because it did not depend on cheap scares.

Not-sequitur: At the very least, The Last Exorcism got me to read some reviews. In one of the reviews Owen Gleiberman pointed out that The Last Exorcism would likely be compared to the number one exorcism movie of all time, The Exorcist. He alsos notes that in The Exorcist the emmergence of female sexuality was conveyed (via crucifix masturbation nonetheless!), which ties into the emerging feminist themes of the 70s . Interesting stuff.

Quote:

So what does the devil look like in The Last Exorcism? I'd be the Antichrist if I spoiled it, but I will say that the movie, directed by Daniel Stamm from a script by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, with Eli Roth serving as producer, is a nightmare vision of the rise of Christian fundamentalism. It's about the dark side of piety — the cultish wrath that can emerge out of the high and the mighty. At the center of it all, once again, is a teenage girl's gnashing madness. The original Exorcist came out a few years after the feminist revolution kicked into gear, and Linda Blair's she-devil expressed our primal fear of a newly furious, newly empowered, and newly sexualized generation of young girls, the first that seemed to be channeling wanton forces far beyond their control. The best thing in The Last Exorcism is Ashley Bell's performance: She knows how to make rage the flip side of innocence. Especially when the camera follows her into the barn, and we see how those animals really died.
Seriously though, it is AMAZING the amount of social commentary that gets embedded into horror. Next to comedy I think horror is the deepest genre as far as film is concerned.

I actually loved The Last Exorcism, I thought the movie was moody and brilliantly shot. To take a page from the Professor's book (:p ) I think the conception of the film was brilliant. I thought the ambiguous ending was more hit than miss, and I am still trying to piece together what happened.

Just in the editing and use of perception of time from dream layer the dream layer is enough ti put this movie in top 10. The use of the van plummeting to build suspense was nothing short of genius.

I both loved and hated The Last Exorcism, but I don't think the ending was ambiguous at all. In fact, I thought they tied everything up pretty nicely, plot wise.

My thoughts on the ending: In the beginning of the movie they have clips of people talking about cults, so they laid the seed there. The son is upset at an exorcist coming, and throws rocks, not because he cares about his sister but because of what is inside of her. He is and was always a member of the cult, and his job was to protect what was in her belly. That's why he was fine with the exorcist being there when he found out he was a charlatan.

The movie failed in two ways, or one depending on how you look at it. Yes, it depended on suspension of disbelief, and for the most part it succeeded, but the ending completely ruined it for me. The concept would have worked far better if they didn't go for the fake documentary.

I saw inception for the second time, and I also liked it even more than the first viewing. The whole plot fell into place, and the ending now makes sense to me (aided by Chris nolan's interview with wired magazine and their multiple theory article).

With the dark knight, Memento and now this movie (and to a lesser extent batman begins), Nolan is my favorite director, with DK being my favorite movie.

I'm with you on that! I've seen Inception three times now, once in theaters and twice with friends. I LOOOOOOOOVE the van sequence. I think it is brilliant. The van and the hotel sequences with the reverse gravity scene are my two favorite parts. I also am a huge watch freak so I love the fact that in the dream levels time slows down and that is reflected by the character's wristwatch. If you rewatch the film you catch the slowed down watch at the beginning, total watch porn. :D And it is an automatic watch too (not quartz). So for those who are not in the know, an automatic watch actually ticks several times per second to give the illusion that the second hand is moving in a smooth sweep. An automatic watch will tick 6 or 7 times per second. So I thought they did a BRILLIANT job with the slowing down watch thing at the beginning of the film and then later on.

I am pretty sure Inception wrapped up with a closed-ending too: he is awake at the end. But the ONLY doubt I had was the scene where he was running from the guys and he could barely squeeze through the wall.

I think that is a good summary of the ending. My only question is why did they throw the baby into the fire? To kill it? Free it? Obviously the dad was not in the cult....or the daughter.....

I still think the ending was better than just going through the motions with another Exorcism story. It was an attempt at something clever, which is better than retreading in a sub-genre that has already probably hit the ceiling.

I liked the story of the ending, but I thought that it was too... fantastical... for the way the shot the movie. Just my opinion, though. Otherwise I thought the movie was very well done on every level.

Ip Man 1 is a better movie. I haven't seen 2 yet, but the consensus suggests the first is superior.

Machete - I didn't really buy into this one. I don't think that successive cliches made for a good exploitation. Whatever, is what it is. Alba's 535i is my love car.

Network (1976) - More dated than I wanted to admit. The friends I saw it with didn't hold it as a classic. Decent film.

The Night of the Hunter - Good b&w. Some serious stylistic firsts. Story and scene progression is handled well.

My friend finally watched Aquirre, the Wrath of God. It's in his top list too, so I suggest you see this perfect film if you haven't.

I should update this more, trying to watch like a movie a day when get the chance.

Devil (2010) An interesting concept that probably was better served by another director/writer. The end left a lot to be desired.

Superman Returns (2006) I have a lot of problems with the movie, and I feel like they really could have used a big action piece at some point, but it isn't as awful as people think. Just kind of bland.

Let the Right One In (2008) One of the few foreign films that I've watched, but it is a really interesting movie. Part vampire tale, part coming-of-age story, part romance, but it all blends together so well.

Dinner for Schmucks - Hit and miss, but when it hits it will make you cry. The ending "Dreamer" scene literally made me spit out my soda.
