Re: Doubloon system explained

The ability to sticky a thread should so NOT be something someone can be able to buy. Any thread that needs or deserves to stay on top is usually stickied by a mod or admin anyway. Even if its not, its probably being revived every once in a while, like the picture thread.

If we keep the option to purchase the stickying of a thread, we'll only end up with some inane thread stuck up top of the forum. Hopefully some admin or mod would unsticky it, but it would still be a waste of the member's doubloons, and a couple of people's time. It would just be better to remove it...

IMO.

Re: Doubloon system explained

Well, I think when the first sticky thread or 2 happens, there will obviously be a lookover by a mod/admin to make sure its not something "stupid" that should be stickied. If it is, I think it should be unstickied and either A) Given a chance to choose another thread to sticky or B) Only stickied for say 2 weeks or a month

Ginkasa 01-31-2005 11:47 PM

Re: Doubloon system explained

But what's the point? What thread could possibly deserve a sticky that wouldn't already be stickied? There are going to be very very few threads that wouldn't be deemed inappropiate for stickying by a mod or admin. I think it would just be easier and more beneficial to get rid of the option rather than to spend time regulating it or coming up with a bunch of rules for it if someone ever chose to buy it.

Stickied threads allow members to enforce their ideas, thoughts, or articles upon other members without any risk of the thread sinking to the bottom of the list. Regardless of the subject of the thread, anyone with the funds can sticky it. I'm sorry Link, but that's the way business works. If you want climb to top of the GT Ladder, you better get used to the concept of: money = power.

I agree. Who cares what you sticky, you buy it you use it.

If I buy the sticky option, I want to use it on whatever I want. Who cares what the subject matter is?

Well hey, why stop with sticky threads, then? I want to be able to buy spam! For a certain number of doubloons, I'll be able to buy, let's say, a dozen two word posts. Yeah, it'll be great. I'll be able to use them in whatever thread I want.

Oh, and let's give people the ability to buy advertisements with their doubloons, too. Buy the option and you can make a thread dedicated solely to pimping your fansite. Combine it with the sticky option to ensure that lots of people will see it!

Oooh! I know! Let's give people the option to buy post edits. This will be a really privileged item, obviously. Make it worth something like 2,000 doubloons. For that amount, you will be able to edit anybody's post to say anything at all you want. You can get Perfect Stu to admit to lesbian tendencies. Or get Fingersman to hit on underage girls in the forum. It would be so worth it!

Edit: Ok...actually, the staff is ahead of me. For 2,555 doubloons, you can be moderator for a month. Which I suppose includes not only editing ability but moving, deleting and closing threads as well.

You do know I was kidding, right?

Advertising for another site other then your signature is against forum rules. Have you been gone that long that you forgot one of the biggest rules?

Jonbo298 has finally convinced me that we need to enstate [sarc] tags. Real ones, I mean. Preferably ones which cause the text to be read out loud over your computer speakers in a drawn out, mocking voice.

I think Jonbo was playing along with your sarcasm. All in all, the sarcasm failed. It's only successful if you don't have to support it or identify it in a follow-up post.

Yeah, but I really agree with him. It's worse than the reputation system in the idea that it circumvents the entire mod system. You do realize that anybody can buy that right? Somehow that seems more than a tad risky, but that's not the point. Mods have a position of power. They have earned their positions and maintain them. Allowing just anybody to buy that, even temporarily, just seems wrong to me.

But I'm not going to fight this battle. It's just an opinion and one I'm pretty sure is widely disagreed with. I know how excited you guys have been for this system to return so I'm just going to be quiet now.

What are you talking about, jeepnut? I'm just expressing my agreement with Link1130 that letting people buy sticky threads is pretty silly. But since the staff is obviously not going to get rid of it, I might as well have some fun. And point out to Vampyr in the meantime that he's being patently absurd.

It just so happens that my sense of satire coincided with the truth in one case.

You just come off lately as if you are deeply disatisfied with a lot of what's happening here at GT whereas I don't believe that it's all that big of a deal. Sure it takes some authority from the mods, but since probably only dedicated members will be able to afford most of this stuff, I seriously doubt it will become a problem. In fact, I think I remember somebody winning mod abilities for a short period of time and that went ok. Sure some abuse happened but that's what made it fun and interesting.

Basically, I feel the doubloon system adds more to the forum than it takes away and while some of these purchases perhaps give members a little more power than most of them desearve, I really don't see it getting out of hand.

I guess I felt that you just seem to come off a lot more negative around here as of late than you used to.

Re: Doubloon system explained

Where do you get the impression that I think it's a big deal or will harm the forums or anything? All I've said is that I think the doubloon/reputation system is pretty silly and worthless. I always have, even back when I was a moderator. It's not as if I think that the forums will blow up as a result, but this is, after all, the third time Neo and company have put a new coat of paint on the system and tried to market it to us. The system is fundamentally still the same, so eventually people are still not going to care about it. I don't see why they insist on wasting their time, but it's not my call to make.

If seeing a criticism from me disturbs you so much, then wait for the staff to make some kind of useful and constructive decision (not that I really think they need to since the forums are more or less doing fine and don't need ot be messed with). Then you'll see me joining along with everybody else to sing their praises. Until then, don't think that me criticizing the reputation system is anything new. I've been doing it for years.

If the forum look never changed, people would then complain about it never changing. Once in awhile you have to give a forum a new coat of paint.

You won't be able to see them until you can afford it. Look at one of Dyne's posts...

Why'd Dyne get a donut and not us?

How about someone make a GT shirt at pixeltee.com and we can add that to our uShop arsenal? Neo could buy about ten of them and then he could sell them for a high doubloon amount to compensate for his loss of $150.

It's kind of funny you tried to use satire by being overly sarcastic, and then the overly sarcastic stuff had already happened. >_>

And if I was being "absurd", I'm obviously not the only one, because Neo is the one who made that a product to buy. How often do you think people are going to get enough doubloons to buy that? We aren't going to end up with a whole forum of stickies.

And besides, once a sticky thread does die out, and no on has posted on it in a long time, it can just be unstickied.

I just don't see what's so absurd about. No one who sticks around long enough to earn that many doubloons is going to waste them on something stupid, they are really going to want what they have to say to be important and worthwhile.

Just don't be so cynical.

Jonbo298 has now convinced me that we need to institute [metaphor] tags. They would indicate that a particular phrase is a metaphor and indicate what exactly is being compared to what so that confusions won't happen too often. You know, so that people can realize that when I spoke of a coat of paint, I was referring to the doubloon system and not the forum skin (which I've never commented on).

And Vampyr, yes. Neo is apparently being absurd.
