!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WALKED OUT AT THE END CREDITS! I ALWAYS WATCH THEM, JUST NOT THIS TIME! >.<
:( Oh well. I liked the movie, but it looked a lot like the others. SPOILERS Except this time they killed off half of the characters. Angel was soooo boring and useless. END SPOILERS |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
A lot has been said here so I'll only hit a few points with ***SPOILERS***:
Ratner was wholly unsprepared and lacking the skill to tell this story. Magneto degenerated into a stock villian, when the side story of him becoming a mutant Hitler (inclusing the botched "speech" allusion) should have been emphasized. Colossus and Juggernaut in the same movie, and no slobberknocker? Are you ****ing kidding me? Not even a punch exchanged. Wolverine turns into a wuss. When he had the "heart to heart" with Cyclops I threw up in my mouth a little. How his character was so completely turned on its head in these movies astounds me. If you want to see what Wolverine's personality is really like, watch HELLBOY. I'm all for characters dying in movies, but the number kicking it in this one made me actually laugh, because it reminded me of Transformers: The Movie. The ending fight scene was anti-climactic and smacked of B-Moviedom. It looked like they shot it on a soundstage. Pheonix's backlighting was hilariously bad. The wire-work looked like it was from a 1984 kung-fu movie. And the fight scenes were poorly choreographed and forgettable. The only scene that turned out right was the battle in Jean Grey's childhood home. That was suspenseful and dramatic. Edge of you seat type stuff. ***END SPOILER*** In the end the elements were there for a great movie, but Brett Ratner was directing it, so it fell on its face, especially in the second half. |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Having the second highest opening day success (being second to Revenge of the Sith), there's bound to be an X-4. And X-3 definitely left the door open for a sequel. I really liked it.

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
I was also confused on Phoenix's appearance. She looked like she was from the Exorcist. What happened to the flaming red phoenix with red, orange and yellow? :p

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
I haven't seen the movie yet so won't write an opinion on it.
But I will say some stuff in the defense of the movie that was out of the control of the director. -The movie had about a year to go from concept to completion. Which may not sound like a bad thing. But when you take into effort that Spiderman and Batman pretty much film about 2 years before the release then goes through editting and all that other stuff. This movie had a year to get a script, shoot, edit, score and be out in theatres. -Cast members who either had previous engagements or a certain someone who asked for more time or they would walk. |

Maybe Nightcrawler, I know he wanted more money. And he wasn't that great an actor, and not that important a character.

I'm pretty sure Halle Berry said she wanted more time in the spotlight or she wouldn't do a third movie.

i knew x3 would be a pretty big letdown when the directors switched. so i wasnt expecting much when i went to see it.
i got what i expected. |

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Magneto hates humanity and all, but I would have much rather they left him alone for a movie and introduced the Sentinals and stuff. They could have even thrown Gambit in there....although he is trouble.
By far, best part of Xmen 3 was the snakes on a plane trailer. First off, I initially called the preview before the previews started. I was like, "if they show one preview, it'll be snakes on a plane." Two, I also established that Snakes On A Plane was indeed a real summer blockbuster, as my friend still thought it was a joke. Finally, the whole theater was laughing and cheering. That movie is going to kick ass. |

I think you could have included the setinels (they had a cameo in the beginning danger room scene), and honestly I think that would have been a much better plotline. Afterall, the mutants real enemy was always mankind, not each other. And if not the Sentinels, how cool and different would Apocalypse have been? Then again, he may have been too esoteric for a general audience. IMO, Fox has always put cost before quality in this series, its just that Singer and his team were talented enough to fashion lead into gold. But once again Fox continued to try and "Planet of the Apes" the series and Singer left for Superman in disgust. Unfortunately Ratner does not share that talent and you end up with the flat and nearly comical looking final scene from X3. It looked cheap and staged, because it was. |

Ah actually tho you would be incorrect. i never payed attention to who did the first 2. and had no expectations of a sequal at all. first i heard of the sequal was when i heard of the directer change, then i looked up the new direction to see what he's done.. therefor, that was my first expectation. i win! :P |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Well just gonna say spoilers ahead and not bother to seperate the rest.
I must say the movie was a complete mixed bag for me. I've come to accept that certain elements have got to change from page to screen when dealing with works like that. But some of the changes in X-men just threw me for a loop. -The whole Phoenix thing just pissed me off. One is it pretty much drops any element of it that was presented in the comics or the cartoon. It is supposed to be an alien being.. not so much in the fact that it comes from space or anything but in the fact that it enters Jean's body and amplifies her powers. But this whole sub-con thing was just bleh. That and I think it went against what was establised in x2 as it seemed phoenix more or less came out when Jean exhausted her powers. -Juggernaunt was changed into a mutant so that they could have an easy copout for the climax. Also they made him a complete waste. From design to ripping off an internet catchphrase. Now that thats out of the way. My more practical issues with the movie. -First and foremost, this was probably the worst end to a trilogy ever. First off they pretty much kill off or don't mention half of the characters from the original movies such as Nightcrawler, Toad, Sabbotooth, Cyclops, Professor X. Then there was the fact that they introduced so many characters like Kitty Pride (who was in the previous 2 movies as well but with a different actress in each), Colossus and pretty much everyone on Magneto's Brotherhood outside of Pyro. The only problem was most of those mutants were pretty much showpieces as they weren't given much story. -Second was turning Magneto into some generic terrorist. Heck, Magneto seemed to have become Bin Laden in the film with him sending taped messages and being on the govts watch list but not being able to find him. Magneto is evil, Magneto is cunning, he is ruthless but they pretty much just simplified all of those elements. -The plot. I don't know where the hell it was. I mean as far as I could tell the good mutants were on decent terms with the gov't and the evil mutants just wanted to cause trouble. So it was like half of mutants vs mankind with the other half of mutants or whatever... I don't know. -the watered down X-team. For the end of the trilogy. Wolverine and Storm are the only members from the previous 2 movies "team". I have no problem with Iceman, Colossus, Kitty Pride and Beast but come on.. how watered down did they have to make the original team. not only that but 4 of them for the most part took out Magneto's army (Storm was busy fighting with the chick for most of the climax and Kitty was running around the building) -They really needed to keep Cyclops alive in order to kill Jean. The way Logan did it just seemed so forced. |

- Agreed - Agreed - Agreed - Agreed... I found the movie kinda boring on a whole, and rather silly in various places... From the generic evil of Magneto, to the generic phrases of the President (which he couldn't seem to say with a straight face... "Then god help us all *smile*") to anything involving Juggernaut... I've also got a petty bone to pick with the movie's subtitle, as I in no way saw how this was a "Last Stand"... Mutants died, mutants changed, but some still remain, as does humanity... Sooooo........ |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
They should of left the Phoenix out of this movie.
|
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Also, what is up with Magneto just casually playing chess in a park following the 'last stand'?
Has the U.S. government, X-Men, and every other person on the planet suddenly pardoned and forgotten about everything he did prior to losing his powers? I mean, shouldn't he be imprisoned or something for all the destruction and death he caused? I mean, at least bill the guy for ruining our Golden Gate Bridge! Will someone at least search for him, sheesh! And one of my friends said that Mystique will get her powers back because Magneto did which means that the 'cure' really isn't permanent. True? False? |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Yeah I liked the part where Magneto moved the chess piece with his powers. :)

I mean the whole point of the movie seemed to be that Magneto was this giant threat and the US gov't was after him. And somehow they let him escape from the island? when its been established the only way he could of got off is either by plane, which seems unlikely, or by boat.. again unlikely. And its not like people don't know what he looks like. And I don't know, I think they left the "cure" open ended for a possible sequel. Quote:

The way they did it seemed rushed and not in the spirit of x2. I mean she was a flaming bird at the end of x2. No flames anywhere here. |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
no doubt they coulda done it differnetly and should of. but holding off the the end isnt leaving it out of this movie. its just putting in the movie a different way. probably a better way.
is there going to be an x4? What will they call it? X-Men: The Stand After the Last Stand! |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
See, to me, the death of Jean at the end of X2 was all good. She saved all their lives, and it came off as a tragic but heroic. The shadow of the bird flying over the lake at the end of X2, to me, was just a cliffhanger or surprise or just a little momento to all the comic fans that hey, maybe Jean is going to be back.
I don't think it was suggesting that the semi-focus of the plot of X3 would be around the Phoenix. Also, it would appear that Xavier is well aware that jean is still alive, but he never tries to stop scott from going out there. Ian Mckellen and Patrick Stewart made those 3 films. They are both grade-A actors and they complimented each other nicely. But after X1 and X2 both having very similar story molds, I figured they'd maybe take the series in a different route. More government, less mutant. It doesn't matter, we can all be geeks and argue over what we wanted to happen forever. I'm just going to read the comics, it's much more satisfying and fulfilling in the story department. Although, props to hollywood on choosing the actors for Magneto and Xavier, and having good special effects. The golden gate bridge part was absolutely awesome. |

well i feel they had been showing signs of it all through X2. the fire in her eyes and such, as well as the firey bird over the lake. it wasnt a surprise or anyting, it was just that was where they were taking the story. and the story very well shoulda been about it. its just done way way wrong by the people who did X3. it shoulda been done much different. but i feel it was much more then a little momento, because it was obvious from the start of X2 that that was where they were heading. |

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
i'm going to tie up a few loose ends here
Gambit was to make an appearance but Josh Holloway who was offered the role, turned it down because of his schedule on LOST, so they took him out. All the comments about Wolverine's personality... is really ignorant because Wolverine isn't the smash it up no conscience type of guy like... or even a fractio nof what HELL BOY displayed. If you read the Comics Wolverine has a heart and shows emotion more so then you think he would. one thing that really urked me about the movie. Psylocke... what the hell is that? Psylocke doesn't have camouflage powers.... she's not asian, and definitely doesn't have blue dyed hair... she's the sister of Captain Britain for crying out loud. Either make Milla Jovovich play her or leave her out of the movie. Kid Omega was cool, i liked how he turned out. Beast was almost 100% accurate and Kelsey Grammer performed exceptionally. The next movie should definitely bring in Age of Apocalypse. With the 'CURE' and such, its a nice way to introduce Apocalypse' little storyline about drawing in mutants for his cause. Overall out of a possible 10, I'd give X-men 3, a cold 6. Mostly for the action, and lack of character development...... oh god.. Psylocke... I hate to see you potrayed in that manner... uck... |

1) I did read the comics, and I read them for much of Claremont's first legendary run and most of Jim Lee's attempted destruction of Claremont's accomplishment. I also read Weapon X and much of the original Wolverine series. 2) I never said Wolverine didn't have a heart. His relationship with Jubilee and his love for Jean Grey show this. But having a heart doesn't equal being a crybaby (by coparpison). By the end of Jackman's run as Wolverine he was portraying him as a "feeling bad? Lets talk!" guy. Its a shame too, because I thought Jackman started off so well in the first film. Wolverine also would never blubber like he did either time Jean died. Wolverine would either turn his grief into rage or simply have a single tear running down his stone face. 3) Hellboy had a heart, but he hid it through a tough exterior. He didn't really know how to express his feelings, but you still knew how he felt. Thats what Wolverine should have been: An sentient animal struggling to find his humanity. If you want to disagree with me, thats fine, but don't be so ignorant as to paint others as such when you have no idea how much they have read. Quote:

I dont think that they can pull off any good way to make another. I mean so many characters are dead, to just bring them back somehow would upset many die-hard fans. also (spoilers for anyone who didnt stay after the credits) if the they did make another which they should not, prof. X would have to be played by someone else but with the same voice |
Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
I was thinking Josh Holloway would be a good Gambit...it is a shame he couldn't do it though.

Example: Pheonix's aura is a giant flaming bird (hence PHEONIX). That would have been draatic and incredibly impressive on film. Instead we got cheesy backlighting. El Cheapo. I don't care that they changed the origins of the Pheonix, because that would have meant about 3 hours of backstory and introducing the Shi'Ar, The Eternals, maybe even the Kree and Skrulls and the Blue Area of the Moon. This would take far too long and completely take the audience away from the core story. What I do care about is how poorly they presented a character (at the end) who was integral to the entire movie. |
