I saw Coraline last night. Superb animation but the story is Alice in Wonderland with a few modifications.

I saw Paranoid Park with a friend last saturday. I'll give it a 6/10. Not special at all.

I think it provides a somewhat accurate portrayal of the differing perspectives of men and women in relationships and the dating scene. However, the movie seems to place women as victims with the exception of one relationship. All in all though, It was worth the watch and you guys should probably check it out before the hypebeast takes hold.

Hey, if you're doing your job right they are the victim!

Actually haven't been a fan of many of Smith's recent movies.
By any chance, is there any book comparison in the class?

And how would you go about preventing the spread of zombies?

well we had to write the paper on how each of us would have went about preventing the spread of infection, using techniques that we learned, like PPE's, Personal Protection Equipment (i think? i don't pay much attention, too boring of a class) and things along those lines.

Just watched Let The Right One In. Really, really good. 9/10 probably. It's just a very good film.

Germy, do you watch any other European movies? I'd like to know what people here think about them.
Not that I watch them so often... 80% of what I watch is from Hollywood.

Oh and Fox, thanks, didn't know. :)

The Germanator 02-13-2009 09:22 AM

Re: Last movies you saw

I'll watch any European or foreign film which is recommended to me or that is easily accessible here in the States.

It mainly just depends on what kind of becomes a "hit" over here, and I say that lightly because despite how many awards Let The Right One In has won, last time I checked it was still only playing in about 6 cities in the whole country.

Some classic European films I enjoy are Der Letzte Mann (The Last Laugh), Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel), Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Ladri di biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) which is one of my favorites.

Of course I love Amelie, that's a great one. In the end, I still end up watching mainly American films, but subtitles don't bother me in the least and I'd say the % of quality European films is much higher because if it makes it to theaters over here, it's probably pretty good or else no one would have picked up the distribution rights.

Wow. Good call. I went to check your facts because I know kamikaze attacks date pretty far back in Japanese history, but yeah I guess Pearl Harbor was kosher.

It's like...I'm learning stuff on GT, lol.

Kind of a WWII whore :P

Though I am interested in WWI and Vietnam also.

I watched Outsourced last night. Really great movie, I enjoyed it throughly.

Yeah Outsourced is a great happy end movie. Kind of like Amélie, Garden State and Im Juli.

I saw Lakeview Terrace and Step Brothers on wednesday when i stayed home from school. I thought Lakeview Terrace was decent, Samuel L. Jackson does a good job as Abel Turner. Step Brothers was pretty funny, the part of the movie when the two "boys" were sleepwalking was hilarious.

Re: Last movies you saw

And I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. Another great one, but somehow it wasnt quite as good as I was expecting...I dont know, maybe I had this one too hyped up in my head? Still great though.

The Germanator 02-14-2009 11:01 PM

Re: Last movies you saw

I saw Slumdog Millionaire today as well. I'd agree with you in that it wasn't as good as it was hyped up to me. It was pretty well done in many ways, but it's definitely not the best movie I've seen this year. It kind of reminded me of a more tame and not as good City of God in it's own way. Anyway, I was glad to see it.

I also got done watching Bottle Rocket a little while ago. It's Wes Anderson's directorial debut starring Luke and Owen Wilson in their first roles as well. I liked it a lot, it kind of goes well and shows Anderson's style. Probably not his best, but pretty damn good for a first film...

Oh yeah, I also watched Zach and Miri make a Porno last night...It was okay. It had be laughing out loud a few times but the story was just silly. I know I shouldn't expect much more from a film with that title, but Kevin Smith has shown better before.

I saw He's Just Not That Into You. It was pretty awful....or maybe it wasn't. Women's only goal in life is to get treated like shit until someone will marry them, right?

I saw The Interpreter. Was pretty good, 7.5/10 or so.

Street Fighter Alpha.

Some nicely animated fights.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death

Meh. It was nice to reenter that world again but the story wasn't so great and the best character wasn't even in it. No waffles either.

It did have Desmond from Lost...but was weird hearing him talk for so long without saying "brotha" once.

A few days ago I saw Happy Go Lucky. It's a pretty cute British film and it really got me in the mood to back to the UK (where I'm reporting from now, whee)

A few hours ago I watched the Wrestler. I expected to like it and I did. There was nothing bad about it, really.

Mononoke Hime. 8/10 Great atmosphere/world, nice story, good drawing.

Across The Universe. 7/10 A musical-drama thingy loaded with Beatles songs.

Really liked that Doctor. Shame didn't continue into the tv series.

Just saw Slumdog Millionaire with Fox.

Was quite good. Reminded me alot of City of God, but not as good.

As well I found an extended scene on youtube from the movie. See if you can guess where it was from

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Still amazing, one of the best movies I have ever seen in terms of both story/animation. One day I will show my kids The Nightmare Before Christmas, and they will probably think I am a weirdo. In fact, by then The Nightmare Before Christmas will probably be so old and outdated and yeah....

The Pineapple Express

Okay...movie was pretty bad, but I laughed my ass off at a few parts.

It wasn't Cheech and Chong or Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle though.

Actually, Dude Where's My Car was better than the Pineapple Express. But it was still good enough that I would recommend it as a renter.

Wonder Woman

It is a fairly good movie (I fell asleep during the middle, I think not because boring movie but because it was like 4am so eh)

From the parts I did see, awesome fight scenes and cool movie.

We went on a mini Bale-a-thon on the tour bus and watched both The Prestige and the Machinist.

They both had their good points and I liked the Machinist a bit more though I wasn't completely blown away by either.

We also indulged in the Wicker Man remake. Now THAT was absolutely horrible. Nicolas Cage should be ashamed of himself.

Slumdog Millionare. The romantic part was a bit weak, but I loved what it tried to get across.. (or what I got from what it tried to say :)) 9/10

Saw Planet Terror for the first time this past weekend. Ridiculously stupid fun movie. But I love those ridiculously crazy shoot everything in sight action flicks.

Saw The Wrestler too. Amazing, especially since named after the Springsteen tune.

And Slumdog, I enjoyed, but I didn't think it was worth ALL of the awards it got. But meh. That's me.

In other news, gonna catch the midnight release for Watchmen. I read the comic, and although I know they altered the plot a little bit, I want to see how it did.

Das Leben der Anderen. 8/10. Wow, what a time that was in east Germany.

We started Mean Creek, but halfway we got bored and ffwed through the rest of the movie. From what we saw, I'd give it a 5/10. Too much swearing and dirty humor.
