I have a feeling the double/touch screens are overhyped...
I've been reading IGN's previews and they make it seem like in most cases their uses are very simple...
3 games I found them them talking about having more interesting uses were Mario 64, Metroid and Ridge Racer...
Ridge Racer uses the touch pad as a steering wheel, but they say controlling the game this way is horrible...
Mario 64 they say has the option of using the touch screen sorta like an analog stick as well, but they seem to say it's awkward as well (although they note that Nintendo says it will feel much better with the little thumb-pen addition thing they're releasing)...
And Metroid... They say the controls work well, however since you need your right hand to use the stylus the whole game, it means you can only support the system with one hand... And that hand also has to press buttons and the like (well, at least L)... So they say if you wanna play Metroid, you're probably gonna have to prop up the system on your knee or a table or something...
Although I see how there could be potential for them in the future...
And lately I've been tempted to save up enough money to be able to buy it at launch for some reason despite Mario 64 probably being the only game worth buying at the time...
DH, i been sayin they were gimicky from the start. i can almost garentee you this will be nintendos only handheld with a double screen and touch screen, IMO it just wont pan out that well.
thats not saying the system it self wont be good cuz it will be, i just dont think thoes features are going to make much an impack at all. (touch screen will be good for messaging tho, just no so much for most games.)
And for some good DS vids, try www.gametrailers.com (my fav gaming vid website) they had 3 on there last week. they might be the commercials tho. but maybe they have more.

Actually I think they'll keep the touch screen for the GameBoy.
Haven't you seen all the games that utilize the screen? It's just amazing.... I can only think of a couple of games that don't use the touch screen for something cool.
The double screens are more of a gimmick.
In the future, we'll probably control our games with our minds. Eventually. :p

yea i have, and i'd rather play em without to be honest. i just want to play the damn games quickly. not sit there with a touch pad and pen to do stuff totally pointless just for the sake of being inventive. to me innovative idea's are absolutly no good if they cant do something that we need and make it easier. Besides making it easier to type stuff, and send messages, and perhaps a drawing game. it doesnt make normal games easier. i'd rather just down arrow thro the menu.
I like the DS, i think they added a couple gizmo's they coulda done without on it tho.

I've had doubts from the start as well, Null... I had doubts on PSP as well though (mostly based on it's price), but since the Japanese price has been announced some of those doubts have been washed away...
But I agree.... It seems gimmicky... Maaaaybe I could see keeping the touch screen for future Gameboys... not dual screens though... I guess the touch screen could come in handy at times...
However it seems like when the touch screen isn't being used for some almost pointless thing in a game, it's being used to control the game itself... Movement and such... But the thing is if the system just had an analog stick in the first place there'd be no need for a sorta makeshift analog stick on the touch screen...

Sit down and take a tike to think about what you just typed. :p
Since nobody needs games, you think one can't innovate a game.
Think of 3D. Did we NEED 3D? No, but it was just so much more fun. Did we NEED more buttons on controllers? No, but they were able to develop more functions in games.
Do we NEED a touch screen? Nope, but it sure is FUN! :D
You don't play a game just to beat it, do you? I think most people play them for entertainment, so touch screen mini-games are a nice addition to the gaming experience.
Thank you, thank you! *bows*
Speaking of gimmicks, I can't wait to see how they'll use the mic support. Have they said much more about it, or is it going to be one of those things that only develops into a major feature after development houses start using it?
I would still personally love to see them use it for Advance Wars DS.

That is the weakest argument i've seen yet. lol. congrats for that. :p
was good for a laugh tho.
[edit] eh, wasnt really going to go more into that post hehe, but theres nothing else to post on.
Do we need games? All work and no play makes jack a dull dull boy.
Do we need ways to control games tho? Yes.
And does a touch screen make controlling thoes games easier? nope. more like a pain in the ass it sounds like.
Does the touch screen make more fun? for a bout 5 seconds.
When its used as a pocketPC, for pocket pc type games yes its fine and usefull. i love some of the games on my pocket pc, and it makes games like solitare easier.
But thoes sure as hell are the type of games i'd be buying a DS for. i'd be buying a DS for Mario, Zelda, metroid, f zero things like that.... and for thoes all i want and need is a dpad and buttons.
well scratch that, i'd love a analog stick. *glances at psp*
hmm...pocket pc.... *goes and plays punchout on pocketpc*

...... how can you say that the touch screen will be fun for about 5 minutes? Have you played it? Nope.
I can think of a lot of ways to make control easier with the touch screen.
Sure, if you just want to keep the principle of "up, down, left, right", you might want to stick with D-pads and sticks.
1 genre that will greatly profit from these controls is strategy. RPGs can use it for map movement and menus. It's perfect for party games.
Nuff said. :)

actually i said for about 5 seconds, not minutes. :D
rpg's arent going to profit at all. playing a game and having to pause to whip out a sylus just to move in a menu is not fun. i've played with many a touch screens. i find it quite annoying to have to get it out. and if your in a car and try, good luck, thats even worse.
Just dont see it being useful at all for normal games.
nuff said. ;) hehe

Is this system going to be enjoyable for people who hate getting fingerprints on their gadgets with screens? I will never use my fingers. Only the included stylus.

I guess the screen is very endurable, because you see people jam on the screen and stuff.
By the way, I never understood how those touch screens work.... can someone explain it to me? :)

this is a bit of a touchy subject...........ahahaha.......er
ad is funny. I have my doubts about the DS as well. I have a gut feeling it's gearing towards Sony owning the handheld market, but I think I should wait and c no?
i doubt sony will own it, (i think the PSP will do better then the DS, however the SP is still up in the air of how well it'll continue to do.)
But nintendo isnt prepared for this, and the excuses they are making make it sound like they're just shrugging sony off as being real competition. Nintendo is going to get blindsided and hit hard by sony in the handheld market. they really do need to prepare themselves for it. thier 'sure thing' dominance in the handheld market may just be over.

Even though I am not big on handhelds, I think I'm more interested to see how PSP does vs. DS/GBA then I am to see how "Revolution" does vs. PS3 does vs. Xbox2...
I guess it's because if Sony is actually able to take it's own chunk of the handheld market, and possibly even a majority of it (and I think Sony stands the best chance of doing that out of any of the other competitors that have challenged the GB), it would really be a big blow to Nintendo and I'd be interested to see how the company would handle that...
