NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) -- Three women returning from a birthday party drowned when the driver lost control of a Jeep Cherokee and went off the road, plunging into a river as the women frantically called a friend on a cell phone instead of dialing 911.

Not only was this dumb, but it costed the lives of two additional people. I can understand being panicked but 911 is logical and is the best place to call if you want to live. :shakehead

crazy people...

although, i can not say too much. it is a possibility that i would dial a friend if i was panicked. like the first one on my speed dial

I know if i was dying and was panicking i would call my best friend.

I dont know why. Something in your head tells you your dying, so you panick (duh) and you call who you are most comfortable with. I know id call her instead of 911....i dont know why. And the fact i know i wouldnt call 911 scares me.

Does Canada use the numbers '911' for emergencies also?

I dont get how someone would not call 911.

When my car was hit by another (bad accident) in the summer, my buddy called 911 while I called my father. But I made sure that if it was just me there, with one cell, I would call 911 first. And that was just a car accident (although it was a bad one). For all I knew, the other people involved in the accident could have been hurt.

That had to be slightly traumatizing for the person on the other end of the phone.

Hearing the panicked screams of her dying friends. And the death of said friends. You wouldnt want to hang up...but you dont want to listen....think about it.

Hm.... it depends on the situation. If you're in the middle of nowhere, but you know a friend's near, you should call him first IMO.

But why not call them all? :( OR as those above me say, get out of the car!!? If you can't open the door because of the water pressure, you should open the window. (wise lesson of the day?)
