Here is the article from Gamespot

Late last night, 27 days before its officially scheduled retail release, an allegedly complete version of Microsoft's upcoming first-person shooter, Halo 2, was leaked onto the Internet. The pirated release, said to be a PAL version of the game with French-language dialogue, is currently making its way around various Usenet newsgroups and peer-to-peer networks.

There has been no word on where, or how the game originally surfaced at this time. It should be noted that players who download the game illegally could face a maximum penalty of $100,000 per infringement for copyright violations.

Halo 2, which continues the adventures of Master Chief with an all-new single-player adventure, as well as Xbox Live support for Internet-based multiplayer, is scheduled to hit retail shelves on November 9. We'll have more on this story as it develops.

I like to get stuff early for the sole purpose of getting it early. It's exciting to have it earlier than you're supposed to. And yet I still buy everything I get early as soon as it gets out.

It's not a matter of screwing people out of their money. It's just fun to skirt the rules sometimes.

Yeah, I have NO IDEA (http://www.gametavern.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8362&highlight=return+king) What you mean

And the parade of pirating scumbags continues. I hope everyone who gets the pirated game gets the maximum penalty allowed by law.

What the heck, I agree with The Strangler. :wtf:

Doesn't seem worth it to me when the game is in French and downloading it would take forever. Some kids have too much time. :shakehead

Canyarion
10-14-2004, 03:15 PM
What, you don't speak French? :sneaky:

I don't think Halo2 depends much on language...
And downloading can be done in 1 night with leaving the computer on..

GameMaster
10-14-2004, 03:21 PM
I'm not really sure. I mean, in terms of computer measurements, how much does a high-end game like Halo 2 consume? Is it a gigabyte, 50 gigabytes, 500 mb? I've never downloaded something that was even a gigabyte so I don't know if it could really be done in one night. Ignoring the factor that other people with the file would be online all night so you'd have a steady download rate.

i just called microsoft and gave them 8 sites that are offering the dowload, and they'll shut em down... this shouldnt be happening, i hope they put an end to this real quick... they can't stop the disks that have already been burned though, and that sucks!

the file is between 5-6 gigs for this download,

So what department did you contact? Did they ask for your name? Did they thank you for doing the right thing?

Well actually just twice.

DarkMaster

Erm, yeah chances are you wouldn't get one. They notified a few media sites, I didn't get it personally, it was sent to the site.

Delta speaks the truth.

I have a feeling a lot of XBots will be praising this game, despite feeling really really let down inside.

It is sad.

just played for another 10 minutes

damn. it is mediocre

The same XBots who praised the first Halo despite the fact that it was really a letdown? Who is surprised?

But the can't stop a leaked game. The amateurs who get into it might have a hard time finding it, but those who regularly pirate games and download bootleg versions leaked months before their release, will return to their regular sources, Usenet groups, and private P2P servers.

Once it's out, it's out.

Professor S

Wow, there are rumors that Halo 2 is a huge letdown? Like the rumors that the Xbox was really the "Crashbox" when it first came out? Like the naysayers who said that Halo wasn't the sublime game that it was because they WANTED it to be a letdown?

Don't believe everything you read. Trust a variety of reviews, not someone on the internet who claims to have the game.

And they cant tell you what you like and do not like

DarkMaster

Of course they'll say it's crappy. If they said it was good, they'd have to back it up with information, which they don't have.

I personally think that Halo 2 shouldn't be very different from the original, because it was that good of a console game. If it was radically different, I don't think it would be near as good as it can be.

Exactly. Halo was the perfect FPS IMO and all I really want in Halo 2 is updated graphics, new weapons and enemies, and improved AI. I'm pretty sure all that **** is in.

I know the sentiment because that's exactly what I said about Perfect Dark in comparison to Goldeneye...And while Perfect Dark is still a great game, to me it will never have quite the appeal that Goldeneye will.

I couldn't agree more. It's absurd to think that shutting some websites down will deter the distribution of already-existing bootlegged copies to the masses. And if you're smart, you'd never download from these slow, unstable sites anyway. Everyone and anyone who knows anything about bootlegging would use usenet, or bittorrent - neither of which MS holds influence.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is simply no reasonable way for MS to stop the current rampant piracy. Any deterrence will have to be relegated to their next venture. And even then, I'm not sure piracy will stop. After all, we all know MS has never been known to be proficient in deterring it.

Professor S

I know a good deterrent: Smart Bombs. Everyone who prates a game gets a J-Dam down their chimney.

"Hey, this illegal copy of Halo 2 is GREAT. I can't wait to pirate all kinds of other games! Whats that sound?"

Its called a B2 Bomber, asshole. :D

gekko

Microsoft did it to themselves, they got sloppy with the control of copies of the game. It was already being spread around before I came over here in early August. Developers don't have the ability to put the game onto discs that a consumer Xbox can read, only Microsoft does, why they ever did it is beyond me, and if they did, they should've kept it on a very tight leash.

What I don't understand is this has all the signs of Microsoft deliberately leaking the game, much in the way Apple leaks software and info out to generate hype. But Halo 2 already had enough hype, and why take the risk of having mediocre feedback if they can sell the game just fine without anything but the name?

tkdbabe04
10-18-2004, 02:34 AM
what are the odds that microshaft did release the game just for hype?

The whole E3 level is not in the leaked copy.

It takes 7-8 hours to complete

It have a "crappy ending and people are going to be very upset"

....maybe bungie and microsoft are doing the same thing like when in the star wars script, vader tells luke, anakin killed his father...
