Hello guys, I can use your help again. :D
My g/f and I just got a webcam and now we want to use Skype along with it. We both have microphones, but we can't get them to work. :p
I have a 5.1 sound card, the booklet says I should plug the microphone into the center/subwoofer output. But it's not working, no matter what I try with the software... I tried to detect a mic, but doesn't work.
My g/f has the same problem, we found an old (bit crappy) mic, but it doesn't detect it.
I also saw audio ports in her PC, I tried both.
Help please!!! :baby: I don't want to waste my money on a USB mic! :(

Is there a red or pink port on the back of your sound card ? Normally that is the mic in.. Can you take a pic of your and her sound cards so I can look ?
is the mic on mute in the volume settings? :P

But it's not working, no matter what I try with the software...
;) Not trying to be a smart ass, but I know about muting and stuff. I've selected the mic for recording too, but the PC simply doesn't detect the darn thing!!
I'll take a pic of the card within a few minutes, I want this to work as fast as possible! :(

Ok here it flows:
I tried the pink port, but no succes YET. It does show a little mic symbol though... :(
Wow they really nerfed the max attachment size!

Yeah thats the one you need for the mic.. Umm.... You shouldn't need drivers..... Under Accessories/Entertainment there is a sound recorder.. Plug your mic into the pink port and then try the sound recorder see if your computer is getting the signal at all ;)
lol. hey, ya gotta ask. :p
What program is showing this mic icon you speak of?

Nono, not the program, but the port in my motherboard shows the mic symbol.
I tried the sound recorder, no succes. I don't have another mich to test.
I'm using a pretty crappy headset, but I've never really used it. It's brand new, it should work... :(
When I try to test my hardware, I get an error, it says: 'Error occured during installation of DirectPlay Voice. Errorcode: 0x8000x4005'
Edit: I started downloading the latest service pack and I'm looking into that DirectPlay Voice.

Your search - 0x8000x4005 - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing "0x8000x4005".... Hrm....
Umm... I'm gonna say double check that error number one more time for me and try and give me a screenshot of it :)

Ok I got the screenshot, I hope you read dutch. :p
It's code 0x80004005 now, I thought there was an x last time...
Oh yeah, would it work if I installed the latest DirectX, since it got that DirectPlay Voice embedded????

nope don't read dutch but freetranslation.com does :) ... it's such an interesting looking language I wouldn't mind learning.... However my girlfriend does speak dutch and german :)
ah that icon thing was throwin me off. sounded like he was saying a mic icon poped up when he plugged it in. i was like, wtf, never seen a computer dectect when a mic was plugged in, its a headphone plug. lol.
i'll just let ace help ya with this one :p i dont use mics often, and everytime i've seen a problem with em its always been something simple that the person just over looked, like volume settings or motherboard sound was set to surround sounds so the mic port was being used as the back speaker plug or something.

Ms Support..
Yeah I would try updating direct x but if that doesn't work try uninstalling and reinstalling your sound card drivers :)

I wanted to say:
Ooooooooh that's so cute..... :) BUT IT DOESN'T HELP ME!!!!
But I won't, cause you're helping me and I don't mean it. :p
Dutch is nice I guess, but also one of the hardest languages to learn...
Anyway, I'm installing the service pack 2. I've already installed the latest DirectX, but I need to reboot but I can't because the service pack is installing.

Nope, didn't work. I have the same problem.
New DirectX didn't work. :(
Edit: wow I typed that while webcamming with my girl, I had no idea that I was repeating myself.
Anyway, I REALLY don't know what to do. When you google 0x80004200, you get a lot of problems, but no solutions. :baby:

Hrm.. did you try uninstalling the drivers for the sound card and reinstalling the drivers ?
Canyarion

No, I'll try that. :( Do I really have to UNinstall and install? Or could I just REinstall right away???

Uninstall and then reinstall.. (sorry bout the delay had to take my lunch).... Because you want a CLEAN install never DIRTY install unless you absolutley have to..

Never did like onboard sound, never seems to work right (plus it just sucks, lol).
I don't wanna repeat any suggestions, but you never replied to Null when he suggested that the mic is on mute in volume properties.
Have you ever tried to use a mic before on the comp? The mic port could be bad.
probably: a) missing something stupid
b) drivers f'ed up
c) bad port

borrow a mic from a friend or something which they know works, and see maybe it's a problem with your mic...

He did.
Theres just a ton of simple things to check when dealing with mics and things like that. more often then not its thoes over the main things like drivers and such. like in control panel, going to the sounds and devises, and making sure settings are right under the 'voice tab'
my friend had a problem where the mic wasnt workin, on his it was cuz it was set to suround sound. and on onboard sound, it switches what each one does. like the mic became the rear speakers plug. (as i said before)
bad part is always possible. you can get a decent sound card for not that much tho. like a Sound Blaster Audigy LS is only $49
i'd rather have a sound card over onboard. my same friend had his computer keep resetting on battlefield randomly. once he bought a sound card it stoped. the game was just too sound intensive for his onboard sound.

Darnit.
I feel pretty stupid now. :p I read this on the last page, but I forgot to work that solution out. I just changed my 5.1 to stereo (it asks me to reboot, but if I remember it right, I can just click no and it'll work).
Thanks a lot everybody! :D
+rep for every post here!
But now that we're at it... I'm trying to start an MSN conversation, but I can't establish a connection.
And YES, I'm using Skype, but I have no one to test it on yet. :p (anyone else using it?)

Never heard of Skype, why not just use good old standard MSN Messenger. It does webcam and audio chats last time I checked.

Well, then tell me why I can't start a conversation! :p
Skype comes from the makers of Kazaa, you get super quality 'phone calls'. Unlike MSN Mgr, you can call with multiple ppl at the same time and you can even call telephones. But how that last thing works is still a bit unclear, you still pay the local tarif.

And you can call overseas with Skype also, as long as the person on the receiving end is using Skype also.
