View Full Version : GC needs RPGs desperately.
Why doesn't Nintendo start making some quality RPGs? That was one of the major problems on the N64, and it seems to be a problem on the GC. Sure, there may be a few coming to the GC, but why doesn't Nintendo or it's 2nd parties start to develop RPGs that are exclusive to the GC? It doesn't mean anything to me if the GC gets a port of FF10, because I'll be getting a PS2 anyway, but I want to see a few rpg titles made by Nintendo and it's 2nd parties. I'm sure they are more then capable of doing it, but they feel that they have to use that time and effort to make even more platformers. Don't get me wrong, I like platformers and all, but I want to see companies like Nintendo, Rare, and Retro try to create RPGs.

Well, Rune, Evolution Worlds (I think), the title by Brownie Brown, the other one from camelot (likely exclusive). Those are the only exlusives I can think of. Other RPGs are Phantasy Star Online 2, and Skies of Arcadia. But those only appear on one other system.
RPGs are over rated anyway, you can find the same in any adventure game (i.e. some people still dont know that Zelda: OOT is Action/Adventure, yet they call it RPG)

the Gamecube needs big time RPGs if it's gonna sell well in Japan. period. I'm not one to judge good RPGs, though...so I dunno if Gamecube has big time RPGs in its upcoming lineup. But I'm thinking PS2 sorta leads in this category.

Well, if the two titles are Magical Vacation and Golden Sun, then they are pretty big. I can picture that these titles will go down in history as classics like Secret of Mana, Final Fanatasy, and Chrono Trigger.
Whoever named "Magical Vacation" must have been the same person that came up with "Mario Sunshine." Even though the title is dumb, I think Brownie Brown's game might turn out to be pretty good. Is Golden Sun being made for the GC?
If Nintendo had Squaresoft as a 2nd party they'd be unstopable. Nintendo should have gone with CDs instead of carts back in the day, and did everything they could to make Square a 2nd party. That one decision of using carts must have been the biggest mistake in all of video game history.

Its not know if there will be a GS title for GC. But it might be likely someday...
Be nice if Squaresoft would be allowed to join the fray, silly Hiroshi Yamauci, he shoulda retired years ago like he was going 2.

Isn't Enix developing for the GCN??
Speaking of the FF series I think Square should take a break and make a NEW rpg. It's becoming sick the way they just whore the FF brand name.

Me too -- how many sequels can you make with the word "Final" in the title?

Yeah, Enix is developing for the Cube, we just don't know if they're making RPGs. They would be stupid if they didn't. I mean, there's not much competition!!

Hmm..How did this thread go from a discussion of GC's need for RPGs to everyone's dislike of Square whoring around the Final Fantasy name.
Anyhow the Cube is doing much better in the RPG department than the n64 at this point.
It has
Rune
GoldStar Mountain
Skies of Arcadia
Evoltuion Worlds
Camelot
Brownie Browm (Maybe?)
Maybe one from Enix
Phantasy Star Online ver 2
The Legend of Zelda
Maybe PokeMon

Legend of Zelda is a action/adventure game.
Also I thought Rune was a third person action game like Drakan: Order of The flame.

I wish....I saw some sign of Chrono Break for the GameCube...:(
Dragon Quest would be nice :( Maybe a Final Fantasy here and there. :(
I really hope Chrono Break is not console exclusive..:(

I just sold my PS2 and now I have to get a new one cause of this game. But 'll wait for more official news, but this really sucks.
If they will port it to the GCN I'll be so damn happy.

the Legend of Zelda.. is a tough one.. it is a RPG.. some call it otherwise. since it lacks some RPG elements.. but it's an RPG
As for Rune, it is a card based RPG made by From SoftWare

Miyamoto said in an interwiew (either to GS or the big one at DICE) that the new Zelda is a Cel-shaded RPG.

Yeah, but then they'd probably make 3 or 4 Final Final Fantasy games.

They do make new games other than FF. Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, and Xenogears for instance.

GameCube needs RPGs, eh? Well, if PGC is right, then we may be getting some. And I still can't believe who's involved...
Remember Yamauchi's fund to support development? Square's getting some of that money to make Final Fantasy games for GameCube and GBA. No, this is not a joke.
Major props to Powder, who sent us this extremely important news tip! According to the Saturday morning (in Japan) edition of the popular Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, Square and Nintendo are getting back together to bring Final Fantasy back to Nintendo fans on both GameCube and Game Boy Advance! Here's an excerpt from Nikkei's website. You can see the full story by registering there (credit card required, but you get a two-week free trial period during which you can cancel at any time).
OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nintendo Co. (7974) has agreed to resume procuring the popular "Final Fantasy" video game software for its game consoles from Square Co. (9620) after a five-year hiatus, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday.
The big news in this is not only is Square coming back, but the details. Hiroshi Yamauchi himself is funding Square's return, by virtue of Fund Q, the fund set aside to help spark game development on GameCube. The new company to be stared by Square and Akitoshi Kawazu (one of Final Fantasy's developers), should be founded by the end of March.
Another important quote ...
The deal calls on the Square affiliate to produce software allowing users of two Nintendo consoles -- the GameCube and Game Boy Advance -- to play together by the end of the year.
"... to play together"? What does that mean???
Surely the first game to come out of this new venture will be Final Fantasy XI, as Square has been adamant about wanting the game on every console. But could we see a port of Final Fantasy X? And how does the GameBoy Advance fit in? There are a lot more questions to be answered yet.
Still, gamers prayers have been answered. Square is officially back on Nintendo.

Keep your fingers crossed. PGC says NCL has confirmed it, but I'm still waiting for some confirmation from other sites (such as, say, IGN and GameSpot). Still, wouldn't it just be poetic justice to have Squaresoft returning because of none other than Yamauchi?

I don't care about how many rpgs or on the gcn, but i do care about how good the ones that come out are. there are a lot of very crappy rpgs out there, and hopefully gcn will be able to avoid the newer crappy ones. but i really like rpgs and so i can't wait for ff to be released. and i hope that chrono break is on gcn too, cuz i really liked chrono trigger.
I also hope that Namco, and Working Designs develop rpgs for the cube, because I really want to see sequels to Lunar, and Tales of Destiny.

Is Skies of Arcadia really gonna be ported to the GCN? Because I was thinking about getting a Dreamcast just so I could play that game. That and a couple of others.

Getting a DC would be worth your while, it's not too expensive and there are a bunch of good games out for it.
