HORRIBLE GAME!!!!!
Plain and utterly horrible!!!!!
The game is so easy to score on. Too easy. Way too easy.
The first game i played was on "All-Star" and i was Vancouver agianst Toronto in a 5 minute game, and i won 17-1. On an EA game i have never scored that high.
There is one thing you can do that ensures a goal in this lame-wad of a game.
Skate in close to the goalie on one side, then at the last second cut to the other side and shoot. He wont stop it.
It works every time when i do it. Every god damn time.
The graphics are laughable.
When players skate it looks like they are 80 because they hunch over so much.
The game looks like it was designed for PSone.
I like the ommentary however, but only in the pre-game when they are talking about the teams and goalies and stuff.
The only thing so far that i like about this game is the fact it was $35.
Your opinions on the game, for those of you that have it.
Any rebuttles?
Come on, give me a reason to not give this game to good will.

I had 2 posts back to back already, thats what, and people tend to - rep me for things like that.
Plus the other thread is like...comparing the two and whatnot.
But i am super pissed off, the game has frozen 3 times since i bought it. Its the only game to freeze on my PS2, and my PS2 is barely 2 months old.
And the last time it froze it wouldnt let me reset it. It just wouldnt reset. It wouldnt go on stand by either, I had to turn the power on the back off.
It pisses me off, cuz i spend all the time doing the franchise, and it freezes almost at the end.
Like it froze when i went to play game 7 of the finals.
I mean come on, what the hell.

lol, well your not a simmer man, i already knew you prefer the arcade style before this came out.

yea. sega bumped the goalies down a bit on lower levels this time. people complained about the brick walls they were on 2k4, simple settings fix that tho.
play me online sometime ;) my goals against was a solid 1.0 untill my goalie had an off night against a better player. letup 6, so i pulled him and left and empty net for the last 10min of the game cuz i was pissed. so i lost that one 10-1
didnt think about my goals against when i did it. wish i hadnt. lol.

not exactly, a few adjustments and you get that down quite a bit. and against you, theres always things you can do yourself to stop it. As i said, try it online with me. :p
The 'S-Move' (what your refering to) has been a problem in any hockey game for a long long time. the goalies are designed to go down when you get that close, so its a hard one to stop. EA's will do it too, they always have, i was pulling that off back in NHL94. Plus this years EA NHL has the new wrap around goal which is almost a gimmie each time. lol

PS2 hockey game my friend. EA's dont look much better while playing. Barly any do even PC, because your zoomed out so much. PC looks better only cuz of the fact you can up the resolution so much that its very sharp from far away.

yea, commentary is good. was last year too. im sure its different for people that dont listen to espn to know the voices, but once you get used to em i prefer them much.
The game has its better poitns over last year. and its slightly worse points.
As i said tho, (i knew you'd do it) give it a SOLID chance and play a while and learn it before dismiss it so quickly. Because while i cant say over all its better or worse then 2k4, (have to play much more to see) its certainly better then the past 3 years of EA's. from the reviews NHL 2005 is getting, its going to be much much better then that. But im holding off till i play that one.

I have been playing it, and i like the contact signings and stuff...no matter how yedius it may be.
And EA's players look way better, even from above. Im used to it now, but since i havent owned an ESPN game, im used to players skating upright. Like people do. :p
Its just it looks so unnatural, even from the above-ish ( 3/4 i think) view. It just looks wrong, like they are top heavy or something.
I figured out how to turn stuff up so the goalies are harder, but its still "easy".
I still have questions though.
1. How long is a Dynasty? Like years wise?
2. ( i know this is stupid) but how the hell do you pin people on the boards? It doesnt say in the book thingy, and i keep getting pinned, and i want to pin them damnit.
But I also actually do like the skills competitions, i loved it in the old Sega NHL 97 and 98 ( i think 98 had it too) But I have been dying for them to bring it back. I havent tried the mini game things yet, or party games, because ive been playing it alone, on account i have yet to purchase the online dealy. But when i do, youre goin down. ;)
The graphice ARE horrible, no offense, because you seem to be defending it as much as I am EA, but i mean, come on...the jerseys dont even look like jerseys. I for one enjoy the replays and cut-scenes, it adds to the feel that the game is supposed to look real.
I like the fact you can crete old teams, but I dislike the fact you have to buy their logo first.
But i do have one minute wronging to complain about. The Nordiques away jersey logo isnt supposed to be white, its supposed to be red. Like the home one. *shakes fist*
And I will still be happily buying EA's game no matter what. I just like it, i think they are more fun to play.
And i hate the figthing method. You cant choose to fight or not, and its so unrealistic, i have players constantly fighting who ive never seen in a fight. IE Naslund, Sedin, Sedin, and Linden. The fighters rarely fight, yet the goal scorers are eager to drop the gloves.
EDIT: Alright, the frequent freezings are pissing me off. It always freezes when im simulating a game 7 that my team is in.
graphics are better in EA's, there was never a question about that, however from above i still dont notice a diff, (i zoom out a bit more tho)
ESPN deff skate more realistic tho
And you might want to take the game back for a diff copy, even on the main message board, you're the only one i've heard of having a PS2 freezing problem. i've only heard of the Xbox version having the probs like that.

instead of simming, how about playing the actual games?

What do you mean?

I dont know what you mean Joiss, but i will give another run down on the game after redescovering controls.
In game graphics could be way better. I was expecting better after seeing the NFL graphics.
The in-game gameplay is good. You can hit the ref ( run into him) and you can miss a bodycheck and hit your own players.
There are alot of in-game things you can do. Manual deke ( also in EA) Big hits ( Origionated in EA) Spearing, truipping, elbowing, hooking, highsticking, fighting ( which is horrible in this game, you cant even choose to not fight) The goalies can hit people if they get in too tight.
I found the one timer goal sores much too often in this game. Not all the time, but moreso than it should.
The seasons are adjustable, meaning you can pick the number of games to play in a season.
It has skills competitions, which i absolutely love.
The season itself ( Franchise mode) is alright. Its not spectacular, but its not bad either.
I have no idea how long the franchise mode is though.
It lacks euro leagues and extra country teams.
When I want to release a player to not be used ( IE T.Salo because hes playing in Sweden this year) I cant send him away. I can only release him, so he is picked up in franchise mode by a team.
Extra "classic" teams are a good idea and I love it. They are the first thing i bought, and i have already had many a Rangers/Canucks '94 game.
You can edit players which should be standard in ANY sports game. Because some players are better than they are, and some are worse.
But the main point for me is graphics. I play every game. And the graphics get on my nerves. The jerseys look like painted shirts. They have little definition in them.
But i want a game to play, not to sim and look at stats, which is why this will get all dusty while i play EA NHL 2005.
I think the main reason these ESPN games are outselling EA games is not on quality, but price. I can buy 2 of these for the price of one normal game. So claiming they are selling more because its a better game is a gross overstatement.
And Null, dont judge the EA game before playing it. Your saying all these things about it yet you havent played it yet. Give it a chance.

read first, accuse later. ;)
as i've been saying. ive been comparing em to past years EA nhl games which have really sucked total ass, NHL Hits got better ratings, and was more fun to play then them.
still looking at pictures and stuff. ESPN's are more realistic graphics, jerseys look more real, have folds and waves in them.
EA's are sharper tho which is what i think your talking about.
And actually ESPN was doing better then EA's (NHL) last year, and it was the same price.
And i dont use all the stats and stuff really, (cept when thier on me) but i play to play HOCKEY, and when i go into the past EA games and get +20 goals on the hardest levels, it annoys me. I'd go back to EA if they'd make a realistic hockey game, but from the reiviews it doesnt look like thats going to happen this year. im hearing they have more sure fire ways to score then last years :(
i'm still going to play and test it out tho. and i still have some hopes for it.
I wish Sega would make thiers for PC tho. and i wish SOMEONE would make one that console users can play against the PC users.

Sorry, i didnt see you say that.:p
And for graphics and jerseys, for one, look at the logos.
ESPN

EA

Your going to tell me thats just crispness? ;)
And lets compare faces.
ESPN

EA
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920428_20040629_screen018.jpg
Again, if you look at the jersey on Naslund, the logo looks like a stitched on logo, not a painted on piece of crap. ;)
(Doesnt the guy on the right in the ESPN pic look like Carson Daly?)
And lets just compare a random game pic.
ESPN
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920673_20040512_screen002.jpg
EA
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920428_20040629_screen003.jpg
Goalies, just for fun.
ESPN
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920673_20040803_screen007.jpg
EA
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920428_20040629_screen013.jpg
And yes, i know you have said EA's graphics are better, but i was comparing certain points here, because i dont see how you can defend ESPN on having more realistic graphics.
lol.
well for 1 i was talkin PS2 vs PS2.
not PS2 espn vs PC EA.
theres quite a bit of a difference gap. ESPN doesnt even have a PC version to compete on that detail level. but if you think your PS2 will have that kind of detail. think again. :p
and that first pic of the EA guy on the oilers, REALLY creeps me out. :p
Typhoid
09-07-2004, 03:36 AM
These are both PS2.
None of them are PC.
Both of the sets of pics are PS2.
EDIT: And the first pic of the guy with the Oilers isnt EA, its ESPN.
typh, get real. your smoking something if you think they're from PS2.
honestly i dont think either are from PS2, espn is prolly xbox (if theres a diff between thoes two) but the espn ones are PC.
They show thier screenshots for thier best looking version. it would be stupid of them not to.
go look and you find the EXACT same pictures when i talks about each version.
Ya, Null's right on this one. The PS2 can't push that kind of detail.
Especially Naslund's face.
Typhoid
09-07-2004, 01:21 PM
Ok yeah, i realised the Naslunds face thing is probably PC.
But thats just a little bit better than the graphics las year for EA for PS2.
They arnt horrible at graphics, and yes, i do think the game will look like that. I know the reflections wont be like that, but player wise, it will. Because the last one basically looked like that.
