Game: Command & Conquer: Renegade
Genre: First Person Shooter
Platform: Computer only....thank god.
Before this game came out, I was already a very big fan of the Command and Conquer series, now imagine this: a game where you're actually one of the soldiors! Running from Obelisks, C4-ing buildings and vehicles, as well as calling in Ion Satellite attacks and generally kicking liberal amounts of ass. Now the premise for this game is solid, and had plenty of potential. If you were to make this game into a recipe, this is how it would follow:
One part Command & Conquer, one part Counterstrike, 3 1/2 cups of suck, followed by another healthy portion of uber-suck.
Yes Sir!
The mind boggling amount of potential that this game had is incredible, all to be screwed up by lame gameplay, horrible voice acting, sad, sad graphics, and a general boring mood. A good place to start would be the graphics, this game was released October 2001, after the release of Half Life and Counterstrike. While some parts, like the guns, look quite acceptable, the enviroments are bland, and not catchy at all, almost as if the people at westwood got so tired of it that they just threw it away onto to the market. I tried to play a multiplayer just with a few bots (theres only one level to play on - and its quite boring) to try it out, as I approached the end of the level, the graphics just ended. Not to mention all the jagged edges and such, built in anti-aliasing and anistroscopic filtering levels would help.
Affirmative
What really hurts this game is its lack of that thing that makes games worth playing - fun. In the second level I got stuck because I had no idea what to do next, there was a gate that I had no idea how to open, like I'd heard in the advertisements, which said "C4 buildings and vehicles", I used all my C4 on that gate, only to find that once I actually opened it i couldn't proceed without another pack of it. Horrible, simply horrible. The C4 came in two different varietys that I was aware of: timed and remote. The remote was not a big step from that of a normal game, but the timed one was a pain in the arse, considering it takes about 2 minutes to explode...thats a LONG time, considering i like to see my victims roast. Another selling point of this game was that you could use vehicles that you commanded in the RTS version. These vehicles include the NOD buggy, Light Tank, Stealth Tank, APC, and flame tank for the NOD side, and HumVee, APC, Medium Tank, Rocket Tank and Mammoth Tank for the GDI side. But it really doesn't matter which of these you choose, their comparable to sliding a brick on ice. With any of the vehicles, you go slow like hell, and on top of that, when you turn, you slow down to the minimum speed. As soon as you hit something, nothing happens, no damage, no sound, no indication that you hit something, you just stop. On top of that, being the clever people at Westwood that they are, in order to keep tanks and vehicles out of personel areas of the map, theres an invisible wall that vehicles simply can't pass through, brilliant....just f*****g brilliant. To Top things off, in multiplayer, the NOD are simply better in almost every way compared to the GDI, whereas the GDI are only set up with an advanced Guard tower, which will only fire in one direction, the NOD have an Obelisk which kills soldiors instantly, and turrets which do very large amounts of damage to both infantry and vehicles. Playing with NOD in multiplayer I was able to get past the Guard Tower with a tank still at half life, while playing with GDI, I barely got within range of the obelisk and two turrets that I was blown to shreds.
I CAN'T HEAR YOU SOLDIOR!
The intergame movies and voice overs only serve to take away from the mood of the game that wasn't there in the first place. The actors, for the lack of a better word, suck. Every word sounds so forced and phoney, that you'd rather skip the mission briefing and read the writtin version instead. The ingame music isn't bad, but not good either, it serves to elevate the mood slightly, very slightly.
Scores:
(All out of 10)
Graphics : 5 - simply not up to par
Sound: 2 - imagine Steven hawking trying to sound military...only with less emotion
Control: 7.5 - Average to the extreme
Gameplay: 3 - Simply not fun
Well that settles it for this load of crap, do yourself a favour and avoid this title that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy...well except maybe this one kid in elementary school that I really hated, he can burn in hell playing this game on a Celeron.
Adios.
