the totally splendiferous magazine "readymade" (go subscribe NOW! here (http://www.readymademag.com)) featured an article in the current issue (13) about the increasing number of artists using video game sounds/tracks for their music.

"A new Crop of Musicians are using classic consoles to make "chip tunes," and the music is quickly gaining popularity all over the globe..."

the article focuses on the artists Minimaster, Itty-Bitty Beats, Midi Maiden, Secret Amiga Man, and T.I. Joe.

it's definitely worth reading :D

The album Gioco Bambino by Klangstabil was made entirely out of Gameboy sounds and the album Viva 6581 by Tarmvred features a lot of Commodore 64 sounds (the title actually refers to one of the sound chips in the C64). Sounds from old consoles are a good baseline for a lot of today's IDM since there's so much you can choose to sample.
