View Full Version : LoZ:OoT vs LoZ:MM
Which Zelda on the N64 did you like better? I liked Ocarina of Time better even though Majora's Mask had a lot of great stuff worth mentioning. It's probably because it was my first 3d action-rpg, and because I liked the story a little better. Both were great titles though.

Well at first when I started playing MM I was like "Bah this isn't anywheres near as good as OoT" but then I kept playing it and playing it and it got better and better...
but it still didn't beat out OoT :D I dunno why... I didn't really like the time thing TOO much... it was kinda neat sometimes, but otherwise it was just kinda tedious...
And I guess I liked the story better too... Sure it was basically the oh no zelda was kidnapped, but y'know like the "storyline" of each level... like the zora stuff and the gerudo stuff etc etc... the levels just seemed better...
But LttP is still my fav. zelda game :burger:

I like OoT better. MM had a less clichéd storyline and less linear quest (although OoT's wasn't really THAT linear either...) but there's just something about OoT that makes me play it more and more but anytime I try to go through MM again I can't seem keep playing after the second or so level....
:hmm:
I first played Lttp after OoT so I prefer OoT.
Right then OoT and MM, both have distinct advantages over one another,
OoT, much bigger, longer and damn good.
MM, kinda 2 games, the book/masks, and the main quest.
Now while I was stunned by places on OoT places in MM really stood out to me, the beavers river place when I first went there, when the snow went away in Goron village effects like that which didn’t occur as much in OoT earn it merits. All in all their both great games, I hate the way people say MM was crap because it wasn’t as long as OoT and things like that, if OoT never existed they would say MM was one of the best games they’d ever played.
My only niggle with both games, not enough save folders and then they go and put less in MM grrrrr. I have yet to play through MM again, I'll do it when I finish Jet Force Gemini.

I like the actual game of Oot better, but I think that MM had a better way of playing with the time and stuff, I just thought that it was damn cool.
I can definetly say OoT is better then MM, one because OoT was the first game, and you can't replace the experience. But even so OoT is still a better game.
But both are fantastic games, and 2 of my favorite games. MM was good because of the extra stuff you could do, with the bombers book, and the two spider temples. And the four little temples on the moon. The plot on MM seemed a little stupid when i first heard that it was about the moon dropping, and when you put it like that it was a bit stupid. But when you play through the game, it's actually a good story. And makes for a great game. Now OoT was great, how it went from night to day, and all the people had there own daily routine. At that time, i really had never played anything quite like it. Which was one of the reasons OoT made such an impact. So MM can't replace that experience, although i thought the sequel might have been better. I think it was pretty much enevitable it was't going to be a lot better. Because you can't repeat the experience and enjoy it as much. So what they tried to do with MM, was to add a few things. The plot really played a role in the gameplay. Now having every characters have a set routine across 3 days. And playing through the three days, seeing what they do. Then being able to back to the begining of those three days and then alter what they do was a fantastic idea. Something new, i wasn't sure what Miyamoto was saying when he first said that MM would introduce something new and add to the idea of the people having a set routine. So i have to commend MM for that, and also with the Masks, and having a different control system with each creature you were. MM really is a polished game, and instead of doing a straight sequel in MM. They tried something different, a new world, a new enemy, new ideas, the lot. I think people were expecting to much from MM, it wasn't a true sequel to OoT because it didn't follow on from what happened. Okay so it did, but maybe you'll understand what i'm trying to say. But either way, MM is an excellent game. So is OoT, both are 2 of my favorite games. But OoT i'm gonig to have to say is a superior game.
Now i just hope someone reads this post, since people normally don't read my posts, because most of them are very loooooong.
SO READ IT!!!
I did read it and I agree, good points C.H.

Both were pretty darn good, but I found MM to be harder than OoT (I don't know why...)
Also, I liked the ending to OoT a LOT better than MM! I mean, at the end of OoT, you fight a huge monstrosity of your worst nightmares, with a thunderstorm going off as you square off in a confined area. It's almost something out of a good movie.
In MM, you go to a weird area with only five little kids and a huge tree, and they all ask you to play with them in exchange for your masks. Ermm.....I kinda found that to be odd. More like something that Hitchcock would come up with. Besides, what did all of the kids stand for? Were they symbols of SkullKid's terrible youth, or what? At least the fight with the actual Majora's Mask was plenty challenging, and interesting, to say the least.
Overall, OoT just beats out MM in my book, even though I got the collector's cartridge for MM :)
Ah yes, the ending in OoT was better sly_fox, it was genuis how your sword was knocked flying. Then the ring of fire stopped you from getting the sword. But MM was more catastrophic, in the sense that the moon was going to come down and destroy everything.

This is a hard one... I like them both evenly.
Zelda:OoT is great and all... but the only thing that it has over MM is the fact that it came out first.
Majora's Mask has better graphics, a more innovative story line, "fun" temples (instead of the annoying ones in OoT), and simply more things to do (and more ways to play because of the mask). But the fact is, more than 50% of the gameplay elements and the start of the story line are taken from OoT.
If they came out at the same time (like the GBC Zeldas) I think I would like MM more.. hell, I still do like to play MM more. But I'm not gonna sit here and say it's a better game.
For me it's like Comparing Link's awakening to Oracle of seasons...

They both had their own nice features, but I liked OoT better because the story felt 'bigger' and the cut-scenes were cooler.

Well, MM DID have the better graphics, even though OoT had the better story. It was cool as hell to swim around as a Zora.
But, MM seemed to try to cram everything into the cart that had already appeared in OoT. While it was cool to see the "alternate" forms of the characters that appeared in OoT, some just had to purpose at all. I mean, including little Epona was cool, but once you had the Goron's mask, it just made more sense to roll everywhere you wanted to in the world instead of riding the horse (besides, in real life, there's no way that Epona was old enough to be carrying a rider. She didn't even look old enough to be a yearling).
However, it was a fun, CHALLENGING game, and I have no regrets from buying it. Heck, now I'm having fun helping my friend through it, since he just acquired it.
Nothing like nostalgia ;)
