Yes I know your amount of displayed reputation power isn't accurate. I'm working to fix the problem.

Oh Neo, the amount of displayed reputation power isn't accurate.
rep sucks anyway, just take it out.
theres no flood of new people here, and everyone knows each other so all anyone does anymore is give each other good reps. i give people good reps with negitive comments now. lol. theres just no point in -rep'n anyone.
sides that, its not annonamous so if ppl did give -reps to each other, then wouldnt be a fun place.

It sucks that you have to have reputation in order to have better privileges. I only recently got the P1 capabilities, and I know for a fact that it will take a while to get to P4. I think that those privileges should be determined by post count, because even though there are a few members who post a lot, not everyone can speed to 1000 posts in a few months.
Yes, what does reputation power do/mean?
Yes, what does reputation power do/mean?
It's the amount of reputation you can give to someone.
How many people have been promoted since the rep system was introduced?

Myself and quite a few of my Survivor colleagues climbed the promotional ranks during the competition.

Hrm, I'm not hear long enough at one time unless I'm at work at earthlink to get any good rep :) tehee. I think privleges should be free to everyone once they hit a certain post count. But not the level of deathhands post count because I'm not even going to attempt that one.

Yeah. I was the only one who said it from the getgo. Reputation is a bad idea. Always has been, always will be.

Oh is that why? Thanks for making such a contribution to the forum with that post.
At any rate, I've never personally been in favor of it, but I've not gotten a whole lot of voice on the matter. It's cool, but I think that limiting peoples functionality on the forums is lame (based on rep at least). It's just not an accurate system to tracking the 1337 people on the forums and rewarding them. As it is now, there are a lot of very well respected people on this board that are getting a bad end of the deal. There are many people I have great respect for with lower rep than those who don't have my respect. Often just because they're not scoping out "post here for rep" threads (exaggerated obviously, but you get my point).
I guess if I want all of those fancy shmancy features I'll have to work to get a higher rep count.
But sometimes it's the things that people don't post that makes me like them more.

I kinda like the rep system, but it is flawed in sorts of ways, but i want it to stay here.
Although i dont understand getting rewards for having lots of rep, say you say something that offends a powerful person, they could take you down a few nothces, i dont think thats all to fair.
But i cannot see a way around it, except for taking rep out, which i am opposed to.
EDIT: and how does this rep power thing work? Cuz i have more rep ( i think) than thatmariolover, yet he has more rep power than me...and he only has about 100 more posts than me too...im confused..

thatmariolover has been here at GT way longer than you, which contributes to his reputation power advantage. Time is a factor as described here:

Personally, I like the rep system. Its a goal to work towards. Especially when things get dull around here. Its something that keeps me around when talk is boring, or gets me to post more interesting things to boost conversation. ANd isn't that what some of this stuff is for? To keep people coming to the forum.

Yeah, that's what I thought the whole system was for. If you want some Rep, you should work a little bit to make your posts creative and entertaining for the community.

I hardly ever post  so I dont mind the way the rep system is now lol.
I knew when we first implemented the reputation system that it would need to be tweaked many times before we arrived at a fair and accurate system. The problem with rewarding people based soley on number of posts is obvious. Now this isn't so true now, but back in the day I knew several users with thousands of posts that were total douchebags. As it stands we have 21 users which are members of the P4 group, which is a large percentage of our active user base. There's definitely not a disproportionate amount of users with no special privileges at all.
A promotion system based on reputation obviously works best on forums with a large number of active users since you have a bigger data pool. I'm considering several ways of changing the system, such as increasing the rate at which users gain reputation-altering power. Another involves incorporating post count into the promotion system, perhaps by requiring a certain reputation OR a certain number of posts to get promoted. But it would be designed to where if you are a halfway decent poster you'll get promoted through rep faster than you would through total # of posts.
Part of the reason I wanted everyone's rep power displayed was to make the reputation system as a whole more visible and thereby encourage people to make use of it. If someone with a rep power of 10 gives you 25 positives then you're halfway to the next promotional level. The required levels really aren't that difficult to attain. Btw, I believe if you give someone (-) rep it doesn't count as much as (+) rep. If people need to be promoted faster (it's not clear yet if this is happening too slowly) I'd like to see that happen through increased user participation instead of giving users more rep-altering power.

I think you're doing a good job there Neo. I think it's a halfway decent system. It works better than going soley on post count.
quick question neo. hehe
im just curious, (to understand the rep power thing)
Why are you a 30 then? i thought just cuz your an admin, and board has you down for being a couple months longer (which is untrue, because the boards screwed the dates up long long ago). but then i look at gekko; also an admin, board has him down as being here just as long, plud he's got more pots. But he's almost half your rep power.
personally i dont care cuz i dont use the rep system, it just kinda stood out so i was wondering.

Well the simplest explanation for that is gekko is no longer an admin...
i suppose that could be one way to explain it.

Oh, no, I was talking about the rep I've received. The 5 is the rep power that I have, and that's how many points I give to someone when I give rep. Neo just explained it in this topic. But I suppose Ace has 2 for power, but before he had two things of reputation too, so I thought that he was talking about that.
