Only for Windows as the issue does not affect Linux or Macintosh users.

Firefox 0.9.2 is now out (as one of the three fixes) to the fix the new Windows shell: security vulnerability reported. Also Thunderbird 0.7.2 and Mozilla 1.7.1

* Info and first two fixes can be found at: http://www.mozilla.org/security/shell.html

The third alternative is to set the pref network.protocol-handler.external.shell in about:config (http://www.mozillazine.org/misc/about:config/) to false to remove the exploit. (This will only set it on your current profile, if you have more than one profile, or could be creating more, you should use the XPI or the updated build.)

And a reminder before upgrading...BACK UP YOUR BOOKMARKS just in case. I remember last time there was many complaints of bookmarks disappearing. There is your warning

*edit*
Uninstalled 0.9 and installed 0.9.1 and no problems installing.

When you uninstall 0.9, at the very end, XP will ask "There is a folder leftover do you want to delete it"...SAY NO. As far as i can tell from where it is, thats where bookmarks and your personal profile is stored and thats where 0.9.1 will pickup your old settings

file new tab will open a new tab.

after that goto the options and turn off hide tab bar when only 1 tab is open
that'll make the tab bar stay opened and you can just double click that bar to open a new window.

as i said. it comes bare. you download the options you want. it doesnt come loaded with them. Opera does.

and i recommend customizing the toolbars and adding the icons you want. i tend to make a new tool bar just for the address line.

then download a new theme and the new options. it takes some getting used to. thats why many download it, try it once and say its nothing special and they like IE just as much.... its because they dont take the time to actually learn whats differnt.

personally my fav theme is Qute, looks like firefox 0.8 instead of the new 0.9 look :p

http://update.mozilla.org/

This Is the main site for Firefox 0.9 and 0.9.1 along with some for Mozilla and Thunderbird. It was abit rushed up for Firefox 0.9 release at last and is a bit of a hassle for themers/extension authors to get there stuff listed and updated as alot of that is done in bugzilla.mozilla.org. They do plan on allowing authors to have abillity to upload and manage their stuff in future.

http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/ is my favorite site for Extensions. Not all are for recent Firefox version(s) though they may still work along with the use of "Show Old Extensions" extension, or they may break firefox instead.

Firefox Help at http://texturizer.net/firefox/ now links to update.mozilla.org for extensions and themes.

http://texturizer.net/firefox/keyboard.html
http://texturizer.net/firefox/mouse.html

For plugins like flash: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html

What is an Extension?
Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow the browser to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user if they need addtional features, while keeping Firefox small to download. Not everybody uses/wants this or that feature in Firefox and there is often debates of whether certain things should be in core code instead. A few did get put in like "Copy image" for win/mac and also smooth scroll over time. Single window tabbed browsing is a tricky thing to have working properly as to why there are extensions for this still at moment.

is there anyway to have tabs working ONLY, for example: when i click on a link that opens a new page, it opens a new window, but i would like it to just open a tab, is that posible to do?

also, in IE there is an option called "Auto in-line complete" where you just type in like 'www.ga' and it would fill the rest in in blue 'www.gametavern.net', is it posible to do with firefox?

yes. it used to be a extention called tabbed prefrences to do that. and i cant find it since 0.9 came out.

im unsure if its on that site seven pointed out and if it would work in .9.........or if the Extention 'Single Window' does it.

Most people want that option and yes it most certainly does exist, infact there was like 5 different extentions that did that for 0.8

give me an example of a link that does it so i can test if ya would.

"Tabbrowser Preferences" extension author Chris Cook (http://www.intraplanar.net/projects/tabprefs/) (author of luna theme for firefox) is unable to maintain it do to time, so TheOneKEA has taken over for now.

He has two variants being tested at moment at:
http://www.pryan.org/mozilla/site/TheOneKEA/tabprefs/

There is also the bloated and tricky to maitain TBE (tab browser extensions) but that is overkill really.

I myself have barely used TBP or TBE over the last year as I have a couple of userContent.css tricks to know if link is going to open in new window or not by curser change for example or such and I use middle click button primarly to open links in tabs rather then have use extensions to force windows in tabs.

If I want to open a link in a new tab I just click the link with my mouse-wheel button (I realize not everybody has one, but if you do, it works).

Hey hey. I don't know what else 0.9.2 added, but the security vulnerability you're talking about can also be fixed with this extension:

http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=154&vid=263

So, there may be no need to update at all, just install the extension and you'll be as safe as anybody else.

This link has the first two options of updating: http://www.mozilla.org/security/shell.html

I didn't say you needed to install a new build as in 0.9.2 to fix this. There are three options to fixing this:

1. The new 0.9.2 build

2. ShellBlock 1.0 extension (which is really not a extension depsite the .xpi but a small patch of code so it fixed it for all Firefox profiles)

3. changing the pref in about:config as I posted in first post. ( only for the Firefox profile you were using at time)

http://www.mozilla.org/security/shell.html

The third alternative is to set the pref network.protocol-handler.external.shell in about:config (http://www.mozillazine.org/misc/about:config/) to false to remove the exploit. (This will only set it on your current profile, if you have more than one profile, or could be creating more, you should use the XPI or the updated build.)

Besides right now I am safe compared to the Firefox users on Windows as I am using Firefox on linux.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040707 Firefox/0.9.0+ (don't let the 0.9.0+ fool you as it is much more updated then 0.9.1 or 0.9.2)

Ok, Seven. Back at Firefox 0.8 i had a extention that let me make a new toolbar, and then put that toolbar on bottom, left, or right side. With 0.9+ i cant find that extention anymore. i make a new toolbar and it only ontop.

So, do you know where i can find the extention or a little bit of code to do what i want?
i want to be able to put a toolbar going down the left side of the screen and add whatever icons i want to it.

[EDIT] woot, i found it on that other extention site you listed earlier. :) it was 'Toobar Enhancements"

Just thought I'd let you guys know I got my dad nearly converted to FireFox. After hte download and install, I showed him the basics with FF and within a minute he already loved it. Then when we got to extensions and themes (not to mention showing him how tabs work), I know I had another successful conversion. Mind that my dad is only 36 (I think :p ) so he's still computer saavy but never messed with FF until he saw me use it.

I think the Adblock extension put him over the edge on sticking with FF:D

The only thing i dont like about FF is not so much about FF itself, its just that it cant read the coding for some sites, and my IE doesnt work, so im screwed....damn..

Jonbo298
07-27-2004, 02:28 AM
If it can't read the coding, then it means the site was poorly coded. Most sites nowadays support more then 1 browser. But some still think IE is the only browser used

Lets say I was wanting to uninstall and install firefox, and I wanted to back up my bookmarks. What file to I save to do this?

Thanks.

Click Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks. Then click File and Export..save the bookmarks file and then when you reinstall firefox, same 2 steps and then click File and Import and point it to the backed up bookmarks you made a few minutes ago

I downloaded it and installed it. I can't really tell a difference, but I'm sure some bugs have been fixed. I hope they get a new version of Deepest Sender that is compatible. I need it for livejournal. Any other way to update is too much of a hassle.
