To celebrate the launch of the Game Boy Advance SP Tribal Edition

Tattoos are becoming ever more popular across Europe, with a new generation of our favourite celebs sporting new ones almost everyday. Nintendo has supported this latest trend by launching the exclusive, limited edition Game Boy Advance SP Tribal Edition. This is a unique variation of the Game Boy Advance SP that features a tribal tattoo pattern on the front. Launching across Europe on June 18th 2004, Nintendo thought it an apt time to explore the wonderful world of tattoos...

· Tattoos apparently date back as far as the Ice Age! Some scientists claim that certain marks on the skin of the Iceman are tattoos. If that’s true, these markings represent the earliest known evidence of tattooing.

· Tattoos found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies date from about 2000 B.C., and some classical authors mention the use of tattoos in connection with Greeks, ancient Germans, Gauls, Thracians and ancient Britons.

· The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word tattau, which means "to mark," and was first mentioned in explorer James Cook’s records from his 1769 expedition to the South Pacific. Because tattoos were considered so unique in European and U.S. societies, tattooed Indians and Polynesians drew crowds at circuses and fairs during the 18th and 19th centuries.

· The Maori people of New Zealand applied their wood carving technique to tattooing. In the moko style of Maori tattooing, shallow, colored grooves in distinctive, complex designs were produced on the face and buttocks by striking a small bone-cutting tool into the skin. After the Europeans arrived in the 1700s, the Maori began using the metal that settlers brought instead.

· Today, a tattoo machine is an electrically powered, vibrating steel instrument. It is fitted with solid needles that puncture the skin at the rate of 50 to 3,000 times a minute. The sterilized needles are installed in the machine and dipped in ink, which is sucked up through the machine’s tube system. Then, powered by a foot switch much like that on a sewing machine, the tattoo machine uses an up-and-down motion to puncture the top layer of the skin and drive insoluble, micrometer-sized particles of ink into the second (dermal) layer of skin, about one-eighth inch deep.

· In the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll 2002, six of the top ten women had one or more tattoos, twelve of the top twenty sexiest women had a tattoo, and fourteen of the top twenty-five. This clearly highlighted the growing popularity of tattoos, amongst women as well as men.

· This trend grows ever stronger in 2004, as Esquire Magazine highlighted in March 2004. A poll published by the men’s magazine said that one in eight of the general population in the United States sports a tattoo. Details Magazine published a similar poll claiming that 22% of those aged 18-25 in the US has a tattoo.

· Celebrities appear to be true ambassadors of the tattoo craze, with the majority sporting at least one, if not several, tattoos. To name just a few -

- Jennifer Aniston has a small heart tattoo on her belly
- Drew Barrymore has a cross on her ankle, a butterfly under her belly button, angels on her back, a blue moon with smile & star at tip on her right foot and flowers on her inside left hip bone
- David Beckham has the words BROOKLYN across his lower back, ROMEO above a crucifixion scene on his upper back, wife Victoria's name in Hindi, the Roman numeral VII on his right arm, plus many more
- Victoria Beckham has 4 stars on her lower back -one for each family member and husband's initials DB on the underside of left wrist
- Ewan McGregor has a heart and dagger tattoo featuring the names of his daughters Clara and Esther and wife Ève on his right arm
- MUHAMMAD Ali has a sinister skull with a tribal background, underneath is his father's nick name Troubleman with a broken chain on his left shoulder, his upper right shoulder has a single crow
- Even Barbie had temporary tattoos at one point!
