Harry Potter is not something to make fun of. Granted, not everyone likes the books/movies but those of us who do have nothing to be embarrassed about. They're good books.

I dont plan on being in a big rush to see it. I havent seen any of them in full lenght, i saw the first one i think it was, but it was on TV, and i had nothing better to do, so i watched it.

But i dont make fun of it because i like LOTR...

I saw it earlier today. I liked it. But it leaves out a lot of back history, and I'm not completely sure somebody who hasn't read the books would be able to completely get it without going "huh?" at least once. It kind of speed through things, especially near the end. And it kind of ruined the Patronus

But it was still good.

Ya, I've read all 5 books a couple times over.

Didn't bother with the first two films though. I'll probably be seeing this sometime in theatres. Harry Potter isn't as good as it used to be when I was but a wee child.

You and I are in the same boat. :( Me and five of my friends were going to go watch it today, but I discovered last night that the theatre is having Shrek 2 on AGAIN, so I'm going to have to wait till next weekend to see it. So we'll be seeing it at the same time, at least. :D

While the movie's arent as good as the books, they are still enjoyable and help give me that harry potter "fix". I've read all the books and am kind of addicted to them, they are some of the best books I've ever read, so anything I can experiance that is harry potter related is a good thing for me.

And I agree with JS that Harry Potter isnt something to be made fun of. Like I said, five of my friends are going with me. lol. Everyone loves harry potter, at least it's like that where I live. It's not a "just for little kids" thing.

actually day after tomorrow is a halarious movie. one of the worst i've ever seen, but halarious. the dialog in it is so unintentially funny.

However, on with harry potter, great movie. saw it at 11pm

Oh...well...then...nevermind...

However, I do suggest you read Prisoner of Azkaban, if not the whole series. There is a lot of backhistory and stuff that was left out of the movie that, if it doesn't make anything clearer, is at least interesting. And nice to know.

And the book is always better anyway.

My date had a few bones to pick with it but overall we were very entertained. http://www.gametavern.net/forums/ht/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

For one we could definitely tell the difference in directing. The choice of shots was rather different from the previous movies, and it just didn't have that "magical" feel they did.

There IS confusing parts in the movie. But it all becomes clear eventually. It's really not that hard a movie to follow.

Dumbledore's actor apparently changed, too. I didn't even notice; I guess I'm not a stickler for those things. Heh.

I saw Harry Potter last night at 6:00. I liked it a lot. The new Dumbledore doesn't act exactly like the original though. And me and my friends agreed that we missed seeing Dumbledore and Harry have a long talk like they usually do at least once in every movie. And I must say, Hermione has become quite easy on the eyes, if you know what I mean. ;) Buckbeak was cool too.

Of course the new Dumbledore didn't act exactly like Richard Harris. It wouldn't have been good if he did. Everybody knows its a new guy playing Dumbledore, there's no hiding it. I'd rather the actor make the character his own rather than try to imitate Harris.

**SPOILER WARNING**

The entire firbolt part was horribly done....but other than that i thought it was great. and the actor for hermione is hot.....(shes 17)......the actor for malfoy is different...but he's still decent. i think the actor picks for both lupin and sirius were horrible.......i always pictured sirius as more of an aragorn person. As for lupin, guess it was alright, but his werewolf form looked weak..... The special effects were nice, but most of all, you GOTTA love the jamaican talking head ("Dis iz gonna be a bompy ride!")

she's FOURTEEN, you pedaphile...shes cute, I'll give you that...and she could very well be hot in a few years, but calling a 14 year old hot is just...wrong

the actor for malfoy is different

no it isnt...same as the first two movies

And the movie was great...I really enjoyed it, much better than the first two movies. Better director (makes a world of difference), better story (3rd book was my favourite), better acting. 4 stars.

It ruins the character if one actor tries to perfectly imitate another actor. Acting is like anything else, people do it differently. Faced with the same character, two different actors will always give you two completely different performances. Trying to perform in some way not natural to the actor can ruin his performance. Its better for an actor to portray his own interpretation of the character and perform his best rather than copy someone else and give a mediocre or bad performance.

not while taking over for a series that has already been established. In a case like this there is a need to make it so you dont notice the actor change. its not the time for an actor to suddenly do his own thing.

However considering his minor parts it wasnt terribly a big deal.

Vampyr
06-06-2004, 07:43 PM
I agree with Ginky.

The new dumbledore is going to have to be dumbledore for 5 movies. That's the majority of the HP series, so I think it's fair that he should be able to act like HE wants.

He cant spend 5 films acting like another actor acts.

But yeah, it is a minor part, like Null said. It's a major role, but a minor part, if that makes any sense at all. So it's not a huge deal.

_____________SPOILER____________

At the end the movie it didn't have the part where Fudge and Snape come into the hospital ward wondering how Sirius escaped. The part where Snape accuses Harry and Fudge starts to dislike him a bit. That kind of sucked.

Overall I thought the movie was pretty good. I don't know why it isn't 3+ hours though. It could have easily incorporated more parts that would've added to the story.

I also like the feel of the film. It feels more real and imo that makes it more 'magical'.

/spoiler

I don't like it how when a book is turned into a movie, I lose all the images that I imagined while reading the book. Like, before the Harry Potter movies came out I had my own image of how everyone looked and how Hogwarts and the world in general looked. Now, when I read the books I see the actors as the characters. Same with LOTR and every other book2movie.

i thought the movie was really good. it did bother me that so much was taken out but what they left in was good, and it was done well. On the book to movie subject, I had my own visions of the Harry potter world and I don't like those to be changed. However, seeing the stories come to life gives a new spin on things. And it makes an interesting adaptation to the book that I might not have caught on to while I was reading. But the book is always better.

BreakABone
06-13-2004, 06:27 PM
Well, I saw the movie with my little brothers.

Not an avid reader of the novels (read like the first chapter or two of the second book), but I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Never really seemed to drag too much, and worked in some ways. Though some of it seemed like mini sketches put together with no real connection. Some finally made connections, while others I think were just there.

Seth
06-13-2004, 07:08 PM
Another thing that I forgot to mention...

...didn't Harry's patrones take the form of a stag? It showed it in the first scene but in the book the patronus was supposed to travel and chase away the dementors. When Harry goes back in the past and performs the patronus charm it doesn't actually form a stag like it did in the first scene, but just a lot of bright light. In the books he could command the patronus on what to do.

Ginkasa
06-13-2004, 07:46 PM
Yeah, the Patronus was the biggest departure from the books. Harry was never capable of mastering the Expecto Patronum spell during his lesson with Lupin like in the movie.

The Patronus was also supposed to take the form of some animal or spirit that was embedded in the person's soul for some reason or another. In the book when Harry was finally able to summon his Patronus at the end it took the form of a stag and rode down the dementors.

It was then revealed that Harry's father chose the stag when he became an animagi.

Its all connected and completely removed from the movie.

I noticed how it didn't have a very magical feel as well. They hardly wore robes at all. It wasn't like the other movies. I was also not happy about the firebolt part. I also think that they could have made the movie longer by explaining more of the background. They never explained how Lupin knew how to work the map. Anyone who had read the book would know that him, Sirius, Pettigrew, and Harry's dad made the map. It doesn't really bother me though because I know the story. It was a great movie.

I guess I was expecting too much of her? the 3rd book improved greatly, the 4th book was like the 3rd book but only much longer, and the 5th book was a tincy bit longer but didn't have the same polish that the 4th book had. It seemed to me like she's writing the books because she has a contract and not because she really wants to tell a story.

Compared to the 4th book(starting off with the quidditch world cup) it wasn't as good.

I enjoyed the 5th book, don't get me wrong. But it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been given her previous two books.

He's pureblood.

Basically, we have no idea what kind of twist Rowling will pull in this book to make the title work. It should be a fun ride.

I will, however, keep my guess that the Half-Blood prince is just a title of some sort, and Hermione will fill its role (even though she is female).

Also, who else thinks Hermione and Ron will hook up in this book? Maybe Hermione and Harry?
