EDIT:
Your monitor must be set at a resolution of 1600x1200 to see the ACTUAL size. (Forgot to mention, sorry people)
It will have the same pixalation density as a 19" monitor at 1600x1200

IMO that is a lot better than any second screen the DS can offer (Not a bash, but an opinion)

To me it doesnt need to be compared to the DS...it's a different beast.
This thing will display video in crisp detail, not unlike high-end portable DVD players.
CG-cutscenes in games will look amazing...video will look amazing...this is quality stuff
Well that first picture is really goofy. What exactly is it trying to show there?

Well I can't say that... because I've played many a games on one screen, but never played somthing on two. DS is innovative and new, we'll just have to see. :)
Screen size...
lol. k then you should make that note a bit clearer, That is not actual screensize unless you set your monitor to 1600x1200.

2 screens is a neat gimmick. been done on pc for a long long time now.
i once had an extra monitor i brought down and was able to play a FPS game online and have the map (usually in the top right corner of the screen) taking up the full monitor next to my main one.
I've seen recently some that have set 3 monitors up the same size in a row for like Unreal 2004. and normal display in middle. then he could see extra out to each side on each monitor left and right. helpful to know whos coming that you wouldnt normally see.
only question i have is whether the gimmick will wear off on DS. because obviously the standard is not to have 2 screens and its not really needed because i doubt consoles will ever do it.

I think that's the point of having a second screen to offer an experience you can't get on consoles or in this case other handhelds.
Of course, it all depends on how the second screen is used, I mean thus far it only seems to be used for maps and the likes, but I'm sure it would help in other genres.

well yea thats totally the point of it. i guess it depends on how fresh they keep the idea's. im just sayin often with a new feature, theres a great interest at the start but if its not totally needed the excitment wares off and it just becomes 'eh'
if they use it for good things and get ppl hooked on the pluses of having it, im sure it'll do great.
but if they just keep using it for maps eventually people arent going to care quite as much.

Yeah, I mean I'm sure there are tons of ways to ultize it, and probably some that people won't think of.
Sort of like picture in picture.

I could see a ton of potential in it if developers take advantage of it. They could do a good job with a game like FF:CC... not to mention sports games could use a strategy and play selection screen. Somthing that was attempted with the VMU (DC) and GBA (GCN) that faild because it's too hard to quicky look at both screens.

I just don't see the potential in the second screen.
Touchscreen could be used for an inventory in a game, but outside that I can't imagine.
Also I can't see it as a valid control system, for anything that requires fast reaction.
It can serve as a map, or guide, or a display of statistics. I personally don't view that as anything special.
A gimmick really.
We must not forget Nintendo will probably next year showcase the GBA 2. DS is just a spin-off but the comparisons are valid.
No mater what the public will still percieve the DS as GBA's successor.

Well, that's if you think simple about it. I'm no game developer, I got no clue what they are thinking, but here are a few ideas.
In a RTS game, you could have one screen (most likely the touch screen) focused on one of your units so you can keep an eye on development as you set up elsewhere.
In adventure games, it could be used in a sort of overground/underground type way. Imagine a boss battle where you had to duck underground, then you could see if the boss was nearby on the second screen.
It would be interesting if like in a Mario game you went into a pipe and that dropped him in a second screen, then they can show how far apart you went in the level on the top screen.
In pinball, it could be used as a second tier in case you fall off the first level, you could reach the 2nd one or something.
And remember it's still possible for one screen to display 3D and the other 2D, I'm sure that opens up some dimensions of gameplay, even if just cosmetic.

That's just stupid and a big waste of money.
well THAT is from someone working at a computer store or something and just doing it to get the picture and get attention. if not then it is a waste of money.
dunno how he could play a game like that cuz it would take a lot of power, prolly running on multiple computers it looks like there?
However i've seen some real ones with a 3 monitor setup that is quite playable.

WOW!
If that doesn't remind you of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Game" (as Neo mentioned in another thread), I don't know what does. We're all going to become addicted, and the only thing that will be able to save us will be a strobe light!

Im sure the PSP will be very cool, but that touch screen on the DS is a whole nother ballgame. I dont know how many games where Ive had to switch to the map screen constantly just to see where im going, that kind of thing gets annoying, IMO. It will be great to not have to do that anymore. Thats just one of the little things im looking at DS, and im looking at as a great idea.

I haven't seen anything that is really innovative about the DS except for that pac man game, but with the other games so far it just seems like it's a conveinance, which is kinda of cool. Instead of taking away from the action by pausing the game to get/equip items or look at maps you can just look at one of the screens.
Or maybe u can have 2d item drop down from the top screen and come into full 3d in the bottom screen and crush enemies or something. I'm sure the devs will think of stuff but I'm happy Nintendo is trying something new that has potential.

I'm looking forward to a Mario Paint/Music suite emphasizing the stylus and microphone support. If you knew how to use it, Mario Paint was awesome on the SNES (aside from the shoddy mouse).
In fact, I want it on the record that I officially (this is serious folks) predict a Mario Paint type of game available at the launch of the DS.

If you can prove it :D It's been a long time since I've seen Apple copy anything in the design department.

heh... who cares who copied who... Apple doesn't have a PSP out, so copied headphone design is useless garbage to argue or debate about.
the PSP looks amazing, and I have to agree with the some odd people in this thread when I say, the DS' dual screen action will only come has a ASSIST in games, and can really serve no MAIN purpose....
Probably a waste of space IMO, because instead of dual screens you can have a bigger screen that can Split-Screen itself inside the game, so you can have one screen with that same capability.... LOL... i dunno what kinda idea that is... it's the same concept only a bigger screen instead of 2 smalls.... LOL
If you can prove it :D It's been a long time since I've seen Apple copy anything in the design department.
didnt say sony invented it. but they had them style out long long ago.
they're headphones ffs. almost every style been out like forever.

true dat... there are millions of headphones out there, and design of them seems tedious when all they do is deliver sound.... if you ask me I like my Philips headphones that blast like a stereo system MWAHAHA
