Sharing copyrighted works on peer-to-peer networks is legal in Canada, a federal judge ruled on Wednesday, handing the record industry a sharp setback in its international fight against file swappers.

Canadian record labels had asked the court for authorization to identify 29 alleged file-swappers in that country, in preparation for suing them for copyright infringement, much as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sued more than 1500 people in America.

But the judge denied that request. In a far-ranging decision, the court further found that both downloading music and putting it in a shared folder available to other people online appeared to be legal in Canada.

interesting, posted on the 31st, and its on a number of news sites, theres others stating having an actual transcript of the ruling. so not intirely sure if its an april fools or not. since its days past and it was posted before april it doesnt APPEAR to be. but ya never know

I think it just means we can share files of Canadian artists for free.. not american.... And I think Americans can share Canadian artists too...

I could be wrong though.

filesharing... there was no mention that it only applies to music. therefor according to that ruling... Movies, Games, Software, and music. filesharing is free.

And i dont think the US can sue canadians for sharing american music.

Downloading music is only free to canadians, its not for americans. Its not just canadian artists...i think. So pretty much its every band except Metallica who take cry brakes between shows. (im joking, i like Metallica) And we Canadians have many hings that Americans dont have....Like free music downloads, Free Healthcare, Pamela Anderson, Pamela Andersons boobs, (but i think they were made in china...) And on Canadian T.V. you can say Sh*t, Bi*ch, all those good words, And Canadian T.V. allows porn....highfive to porn...

back to the topic @ hand...

File sharing shouldn't be copyright infringement...

the only people that should be prosecuted are the people making money off of it, such as Re-Distributors/Resellers.

How does the file get on the file swapping program? Someone must've had the CD and ripped it into mp3.
So they did buy the CD. They are just sharing it with people they don't know. SHARING should be a god given right...
