Nicole Kidman??
I mean, is she a good actor??
It's probably that she has a nice face... but she's way too cocky.
Are there more actors/actresses that you think don't deserve the reputation they receive?? :D

What makes you think Nicole Kidman is cocky? I always thought she was kind of shy and modest. Is she a good actor? I don't know, you'll have to watch some movies she's featured in. Go see Cold Mountain or rent Moulin Rouge. And since none of us really know what actors are like when they're not acting or giving interviews, I think we should be gentle in our assessments of them.

I agree, I don't think there is anything wrong with Nicole Kidman...She seems fine to me.
I don't really know about any other good actors/actresses that don't get much attention. Phillip Seymour Hoffmann maybe, Fred Willard is really funny too...
I dunno, there are actors and people I like, but I usually focus on the directors and past history to see whether I wanna see a movie.
I think she's famous because she's Aussie.. it's just like Kylie Minogue and her music. You either like her, or you don't. Mel Gibson and the Passion.. like it or don't.
Key point: The AUSSIE factor.

what the ****?
1. she's a GREAT actress
2. she is very pretty...that always helps in Hollywood, duh
3. too cocky? explain. she seems very shy and modest...she like covers her mouth and giggles when Jay Leno makes *somewhat* controversial jokes
Kidman deserves the rep...
As for people who don't?
tough to say...everyone who's been involved with Academy Award winning movies have earned their props, IMO. This was a good year for actors...Bill Murray, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Ben Kingsly...all great performances. Tim Robbins, Benicio Del Torro, Renee Zelwegger, Charleze Theron, Naomi Watts.....all top of their game.
Ben Affleck is a terribly overpaid, overexposed actor...but I think a lot of that has to do with his thing with J-Lo. The music industry is where people are REALLY overrated.

Yeah, i think Nicole Kidman is very talented. And I wouldn't mind looking like her (most of the time).
I do agree with the Aussie thing but I really do think Nicole has a lot of talent to back it up. And props to Johnny Depp and the Lord of the Rings people...lots of talent there.

I never really looked at anyone not deserving anything. Everyone has control of their destiny, it just so happens, other people feed off of their glory.
We like to see actors/actress/musicians win awards, especially those we like. If they won it, they probably deserved it.
I terribly despise people who go around saying "They suck" or "He/She sucks!"
I'm not implying anyone or anybody said that in this thread but thats my opinion. Again the Aussie factor comes into play... You like them or you don't.... but they will never suck because they're getting farther in life than you are.
e.g. "Vanilla Ice was such a crappy rapper! Look at that hair do!"
Vanilla Ice got famous for rapping like he did, and he actually was KNOWN for that do...
^ thats my point, and it isn't that sharp, so you shouldn't get prickled by it :D

Arthur C. Clarke, but thats not the point...
In Moulin Rouge Nicole Kidman was amazing... she is one of the few female actresses left who are good at acting, not just famous for their looks. She's also possibly the last glamourous woman... from the days of Maureen o'Hara, Marylin Monroe, and al th eothers who really knew how to look amazing, well-put together, and strong.
Aussie is a plus, but not key to her acting-- unless you count that she has a GREAT American accent.

Ok perhaps I was wrong about Kidman. But I didn't really like her in Gangs of New York, but I shouldn't have based my opinion on 1 movie...
What about Renee Zellweger (spelling?)? I think she's pretty cute AND a good actress. I loved her in Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise. :D

I don't really like Renée Zellweger, I suppose she's an OK actress, but she's always making that really weird/ugly pouty face or something...let me see if I can find an example. Like here,http://images.allposters.com/images/75/039_45923.jpg I think she looks really unattractive when she's not smiling or something.
DimHalo

i don't really think renee zellweger ranks right up there with Kidman for acting and don't really think she matches Zeta Jones with looks... she's a good actress but not someone that I think will go down in history

I actually think Renee is a VERY good actress.
Not quite as good as the top handful, but damn close. And I don't like the pouty face either, Germy.
And I agree with ya, JS...she's not quite at the top of acting or attractiveness, but she's above average in both areas IMO so that makes her a pretty big star.

Not sure if you said that with caps because of what i said, but wanted to clarify... I do think she is a good actress, she's just not one of the greatest.
So basically, I agree with you.

no actually I was referring more to Germy's 'OK' statement :)
you're pretty much spot-on, IMO ;)

I only say she's OK because I personally have no evidence of her being great. I haven't seen Cold Mountain or Chicago or whatever else movies that she is great in. I guess I should have said that I have no judgement on her, due to lack of evidence. I take back my "ok" comment until I have seen her in more movies.
DimHalo
03-16-2004, 05:31 PM
Which might not be for a while since you don't really see her as that great of an actress right?
That's usually how it ends up happening with me.
The Germanator

Well...I see good movies. If she is in a movie I wanna see, then yeah, that won't effect me wanting to see the movie...But if she is in a movie that I don't care for, than obviously I won't see it.

Chicago is a good movie, but you haven't seen that yet... of course, I would imagine that it is not your style of movie, right? I would not expect many guys to go for it unless they were watching to see Catherine Zeta Jones half naked (ask jeepnut)...
of course, I'm not always right, there are lots of guys that really like it

Again yes, by my definition and style, not a movie I would like to see. I probably wouldn't mind it if someone put it on, but I'm not going out of my way to see it.

I really liked Chicago, INCLUDING Catherine Zeta Jones being half naked ;)
Music is great...fantastic direction...some VERY creative ideas (see: puppet master scene ;)) and good acting.
Some talent out there I didn't know much of...Catherine Zeta Jones can really dance, and John C. Reilly can really sing. Good stuff.

I agree, but Tom Hanks was much better than him in that movie. Tom Hanks can do so many different roles. His more recent performances in that movie, and Road to Perdition were excellent. I want to see that new comedy that he's in where they're robbing something. I don't remember the detailis about it, but they're in the south and stuff; I saw previews for it.

The Ladykillers I believe it's called. Apparently it's a remake of a 1955 comedy. The Coen brothers are directing, that should be a good sign.

I love Spielberg movies though.... Spielberg do some fantasy thing please! :(

Tom Cruise is nice too, but he's not reallly a great actor... just a cool character and stuff. :)
Same with Harisson Ford! Does cool roles, but it's like he's always the same...

Tom Cruise is not a GREAT actor, but he definately doesn't just ride on his 'good looks'. He was great alongside Dustin Hoffman in 'Rain Man', pretty good in 'Jerry McGuire', pretty good in 'Minority Report' and from what I hear, good in 'The Last Samauri'.
Harrison Ford only works for certain roles...(see: Indiana Jones). He's been lucky enough to be casted into big-time movies that have made a TON of money...the Jack Ryan movies, the Fugitive, etc.
