CHICAGO - Say goodbye to those super-sized fries — McDonald's is slimming down its menu.

The hamburger giant has started phasing out its trademark Supersize fries and drinks in its U.S. restaurants as part of an effort to simplify its menu and give customers choices that support "a balanced lifestyle," a company spokesman said Tuesday.

By the end of 2004, Supersize will no longer be available at the nation's 13,000-plus McDonald's outlets except in certain promotions, McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said.

The move comes as the world's largest restaurant company, and fast-food chains in general, are under growing public pressure to give consumers healthier food options in a nation that has suddenly become aware of its bulging waistline and the health dangers that come with it.

McDonald's began offering entree salads last year and has been moving to provide more fruit, vegetable and yogurt options with its Happy Meals. But the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company remains a magnet for public concerns — and legal actions — about obesity.

Riker said the changes started going into effect in January.

"This core menu, which has been under development since 2002, simplifies our menu and restaurant operations and provides a balance of choices for our customers," he said. "A component of this overall simplification, menu and balanced lifestyle strategy is the ongoing phase-out of the Supersize fry and the Supersize drink options."

The company did not immediately disclose other details of the menu changes.

It looks like supersize will be gone soon. Oh well, I always just get a large at Burger King if I need to. Supersize is too much for me.

Neo

People will just order two larges instead, which is more than a super size, so they'll get even fatter.

Lets make everything the size of kids meals. Then we can order 5, eat them all equaling to a supersize and gain 5 toys in the process:D

Hehe America with it's problems. :D

So tell me, how much liter is a supersized coke?
It's kinda weird though... if you want healthier food, you wouldn't go to McDonals would you?? ...
That's probably because those things are EVERYWHERE.

BTW Burger King doesn't even have anything vegetarian... :(

They tried the veggie whopper awhile back, but that kind of flopped. But now they are on the carb kick offering whopper bowls or breakfast bowls, etc...

wow, this is terrible news... I hate when companies give in like that.

It's kind of stupid... EVERYBODY knows they offer fatting food, and if it makes you fat, it's your OWN fault. So um, I expect either what Neo said to happen, or I expect for them to start to lose customers and eventually go back to the supersize.

DimHalo
03-03-2004, 11:55 AM
i agree that it is rediculous for the fast food places to get rid of the stuff that is "too fattening" . fast food is known to be bad for you, so people who are that worried about their weight should just eat at the places that have food that is better for you. its not that hard to figure out.

granted, the supersize does say something about the American way of living exhorbanant (is that the right word?) lifestyles, but if someone wants a lot of food, let them have it

it actually kind of makes me wonder if this is actually a money making scheme... no supersize so you've got to get an extra order of fries, which means spend more money

Hardee's isn't really anything special. I went into one in South Carolina, and I didn't think it was any special.

What you should say is that none of them are as good as ranch1 (mmmmmmmmmmm. grilled chicken....) or Checkers (mmmmmmmmmmm.... Big Buford...........)...........

I've sort of gotten off of fast food...I would always sort of get grossed out thinking about eating at McDonald's. Once in a blue moon I may go to Wendy's or Taco Bell, but very rarely.

bobcat

i don't eat any of this food anymore. Actually I've stopped for about 2 years.

I can't. It tastes real good, but it's not normal food. You can just tell by the way it looks/tastes.

So I started eating sushi and subway, and most importantly, home cooking. Don't get better than that!

*edit* I kinda contradicted myself. Saying "it tastes good" but you can tell it's not normal by the way it tastes.

What I meant is that is has a unique taste, like nothing I've ever had b4, and still is tasty, but in a very unusual way (e.g. when you have a cheeseburger).

Vampyr

I agree with Bobcat. I very very rarely eat fast food. The only time I eat fast food is if I am out with friends and they all want to stop somewhere to eat. But, most of my friends like authentic mexican, so we usually eat at a local place called La Finca's (SlyMoogle loves that place.)

But, if I do eat fast food, I either eat at Arby's or Taco Bell. I dont like McDonalds at all anymore. It got to the point of when I ate there, I got sick. I dont know why, I just hate that food now.

No, wait, Hardee's is even worse. Arby's is god awful, too.

Here's my abbreviated list of top fast food joints.

1. Wendy's
2. Whataburger
3. Jack in the Box
4. Rally's (which is kinda like Checkers)

902. Burger King
903. McDonald's
904. Everything else

Yeah, I've been to Hardee's since they've had that burger (which they've had for quite awhile now). It's not very good. A bigger patty doesn't necessarily mean a better burger, especially at a fast food joint.

I love Jack in the Box, but they had a Gourmet Bistro 1 lb. burger awhile back and it was disgusting.

I figure with a bigger patty you have to take extra care in cooking it for it to be any good, and I'm sure the chumps they hire at fast food joints mostly don't care.

Maybe Hardee's is better up in St. Louis. The one I go to is in a small town in Louisiana whenever I make the drive between Houston and New Orleans to go home or to school.

On a sidenote, there's a girl in Canada that has the same name as me, but then the female form. :D The surname is the same.

I eat McDonalds almost every day. Sometimes even several times a day and I only weigh in at 150. I can eat a lot at a time. My usual meal consists of 4 McDeal sandwichs and a McFlurry. I never get the fries though because I'll always substitute a side salad. But back in the day my meals were 2 Double Big Macs, Supersize fry, and supersize drink, 6 nuggets, 2 pies and a McFlurry.

But in Canada, McDonalds no longer uses the term Supersize (though the actual sizes are still the same).

Bah! these restaurants are supposed to be for INDULGING. But now that America just goes in everyday and orders 50lbs of food and complains that they didn't know it was fattening.

Or how about that lady who sewed McDonalds for her coffee being too hot... So why didn't she order the iced coffee at Dunkin Donuts?
