NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE RESIDENT EVIL SERIES AS YOU KNOW IT KEPT THAT WAY UNTIL RE4 IS RELEASED, YOU MUST NOT READ THIS.

I suggest if you dont want to spoil the game but still learn a good amount about gameplay, read the first portion, up till the story spoiler warning.

Its been known for a few days GI was gunna have the scoop on whats so great about RE4. Some of those details have been leaked and even confirmed by GI editors as true:

Turn back now in case you don't want to know about the games. I didn't see a thread about it so I guess it's ok to make this thread.

1. They game can be played in first person or one of two new views. They are basically slight variations on a close third person camera.
2. It must be viewed in widescreen. If your tv doesn't support the 16:9 aspect ratio, the game will feature black bars on top and bottom of the screen to make sure you experience the game to its fullest on a 4:3 monitor. HDTV users, the game supports 480 progressive scan. This is needed because,...
3. In 3rd person, Leon fills the far left side of the screen. It feels like you are playing a first person shooter even withour Leon on the screen.
4. Controls are them same as before. However, health and ammo will now be onscreen.
5. Even with the old controls, the new views make it feel like an entirely different game.

Now for story:SPOILERS!!!!!

1. RE4 takes place in 2004, 6 years after RE2.
2. Umbrella is gone and with them,...the zombies.
3. Leon is hired by the president to guard his daughter. Before he can take the job, she is kidnapped and taken to a village in south america where all the villagers hunt him down in an eerie trance.
4. The worlds are completely wide open.
5. No more door animations or pre-rendered cutscenes. Everything is done in-engine.
6. Areas feature a few very brief loadtimes.
7. Enemies will react to damage done to them in places. Shooting an enemie in the foot will make them hobble.
8. Villagers are armed with sickles, axes, pitchforks, and many more sharp objects.Which they can throw at you. These are not mindless zombies.
9. You can shoot the thrown objects out of the air. If you time it right.
10. There is an action button. For instance, you can shoot an enemie and then quickly close the gap and kick them in the chest. Also to move objects in front of doors to keep villagers from you. Also to puch a ladder full of enemies off from you and more.
11. In a later level, you are in complete darkness and unable to see anything until the moonlight illuminates the villagers.
12. The villagers are smart. In later levels they get smarter. For instance, if you shoot at one, it won't continue to go towards you. It may run away and if you follow him, it could purposefully lead you to an area where 6 more await with bow guns. They are more human.

In the levels the play, the action was intense with many villagers after them. This was just the begining of the game.

There are plenty of photos and the game looks amazing. They say it is easily the best looking cube game yet.

To say the least, its different than other REs. But at the same time, the RE series needed a little shaking.

They are magazine captures (digital camera), so they are lo res and not very good quality. You will have to buy the magaizine for clearer view.

The game sounded and looked awesome up until I read about the story... I think it sounds really stupid...

And what happened to Sherry and all that good stuff I wanted resolved?

but the new gameplay additions should be fun... I'm curious as to how the classic RE controls will work out with the new view... I never had a problem with the controls in the first place...

It looks like there will be a couple guest appearances in the game... Among them, Leatherface and Cave Trolls from LotR...

Edit: Bluefire reminded me about Wesker's company thing, which is probably behind it all... So the story might not be as bad as it first sounds...

Me as well. I've just never had any fascination with them.

I think this will be a welcome break from the other Resident Evils, as they were getting a bit repetitive. I'm sure Resident Evil 5 or 6 will have closure (or something) with sherry. The series seems to like to jump around in time lines.

I cant believe they still havent fixed the controls. It's obviously looking stunning graphics wise, but those controls have always been a BIG turn off for me. A little pissed right now.

The preview says that even with the controls being the same, it feels like a whole new game with the new cameras... so maybe you'll like them...

I never had a problem with the controls in the first place though, as I've said a million times in the past...

And BlueFire pointed out a fun fact on AIM... what happened to Leon being infected? And the dark castle-ish place? And the weird darkness stuff... It looks almost like they've pulled an RE 3.5... :sneaky:

Damn this game looks so good!!
I can't believe they still have the controlls like 'aim up, aim straight ahead, aim down'.
Hopefully it will be analog aiming this time... probably. :)

I'm not gonna read into the story yet, gotta play the other RE games first and THEN I'll play RE4. :D

They say the controls are similar to previous RE's but a lot less clunky, and the new cameras are great.

I havn't played Manhunt, but from what I heard it's very stealthy... Lot of sitting around in the shadows waiting for the right time to move/strike/whatever...

I highly doubt there'll be any of that in RE4... The only way it sounds similar to me (both judging by previews only) is the general idea of the enemies, a bunch of weirdos running around with weapons...

You guys are under the mindset that theyve showed us the entire game in those few crappy magazine scans? Why couldnt leon still be infected, and there still be dark castle is locations?

Not in terms of gameplay, but plot and setting. Main character dropped into some dangerous area filled with muderous psychos bent on ripping him apart by any means necessary. That's what it reminded me of anyway when I read the new info.

I read on MagicBox that they scrapped everything they did about this game before we've seen this new footage :P

Well that could be a possibility, however it just seems waaaay too different from before... No black virus things in any of the screens, no settings anything near the dark castle-ish thing...

And if you've ever heard of "RE 1.5", then you'd know it wouldn't be the first time Capcom scrapped everything and started over...

Resident Evil 1.5 information (http://www.bioflames.com/default.htm)

It was supposidly 70-80% complete and they scrapped it all... It could explain why it's taking them so long to release RE4...

Edit: Oh and here'd be the best proof... Quote from the magic box BLueFire mentioned...

"the producer mentioned that all previous scenes shown were scraped, the story and details were totally reworked"

Ick dude. Manhunt was the singular most disappointing game I've ever played. It's got some really disturbing crap in it. But the stealth factor was really bad. The enemies all follow set paths until they see you, at which time they follow you until you go into a dark corner. They then go back to their path and pretend nothing happened. Stealth=Deus Ex, but that's just me.

I agree with you a lot here. I want the damn zombies! Villagers don't scare me, even if they have some leather face complex. But what's that about "sherry and all the good stuff?" I tought you found RE2 storyline to be kinda lame. At least you always said you didn't like Claire looking for her brother. I tought you would find the Sherry part of the story to be just as "lame."

Errr the graphics really probably wouldn't have been much worse than the final RE2... They were PS1 games, afterall...

And Nemisis, I think RE2 is overrated... Everyone says it's the best game of the series, but I disagree... I don't think it's a bad game (I've beaten it many-a-time), necesarily... One thing I know I have said is that I don't like how RE went from more of a cheesy horror movie type of game to a more sci-fi taking itself seriously kinda game... Which started with RE2, but I dunno...

After the RE Remake came out and you got Lisa and all this junk and I found out Wesker has Sherry, I've been curious as to what's gonna happen to her...

Didn't DMC evolve form the development of RE4? Then they stopped developing RE4 and named the new game DMC. :) I think.
