No that is not a typo ....

Mozilla Firebird is now officially Mozilla Firefox as of the new 0.8 release. At the moment it is only available as a installer version on windows as Ben Goodger said the .zip version won't be until later in the week in ftp directory, won't be listed on mozilla.org though.

Window installer version: (ftp.mozilla.org may be busy) ftp://ftpmoz.newaol.com/pub/firefox/releases/0.8/FirefoxSetup-0.8.exe

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/

If you are updating from the 0.7 release to 0.8 then don't be surprised if you have to start a new profile as themes have been changed a few times since 0.7 and extensions changed too.

It is so busy at mozillazine forums that I can't get on to see the chaos. *mutters*

Ummm. this is pretty cool, but I have a few questions...

1. Is it just me, or is the scroll bar gone??
2. Ok, I downloaded this and booted it up. At first it was using a new theme, none of my old Firebird bookmarks were there, or my search engines, etc, etc. So I leave for a while and come back. Now, Firefox has my old theme, and everything. while this makes me happy, its a little wierd.
3. Um, what can this baby do? why is it better than firebird?

[edit] WTH!? I just realized my back and forward buttons are gone................grrrrrr

I would also like to add that by gong to view>customize, I still have no back or forward buttons.

Good idea time: Wait to update to a new version of a program. Give it a few weeks then upgrade. I know it seems hard, but it gives them some time to fix bugs. For now Firebird and I are friends.

This is just the new release of Firebird. Firebird has now evolved into Firefox. All of the old code is there.

I guess, I've had no problems so far.

Vampyr, you should look at the view tab, and then toolbars, and make sure both of the options are checked.

A quick reply:

I would also like to add that by gong to view>customize, I still have no back or forward buttons. Make sure the navgation toolbar is checked as when toolbards go back to default they could be hiding there perhaps or it could be theme compatibility problems also.

I take it you upgrade from Firebird 0.7 to Firefox 0.8 right as the themes have been changed a few times (widgets to bindings etc long story) and so you need a updated version of theme sorry. Try selecting default theme and then restart maybe?

If you went from release to release then:

ALways use a new profile with a new build.

New Profile:

Close Firefox and run

"path:\to\firefox.exe" -p

You can copy over stuff from the old profile like (if you want to keep them):

-bookmarks.html
-cookies.txt, signons.txt,cookperm.txt,key3.db
-localstore.rdf (arrangements of the UI)
-user.js
-usercontent.css
-userchrome.css

and etc...

Profile folder location:

On Windows XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData?%\Phoenix\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\ and the rest should be obvious.

On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\

On Linux, the path is usually ~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxxx.slt.

On MacOS? X, the path is usually ~/Library/Phoenix/Profiles/default/xxxxxxxx.slt.

Note: Mozilla Firebird is capable of handling more than one user and thus, more than one profile. The path examples above refers to the default profile that is automatically created when you start Mozilla Firebird for the first time. You can manage any number of profiles by using the Profile Manager.

I'm going to wait for the official .zip version later though myself.

By the way the new Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 email client is out also.

have to see if its better then my Opera. opera's by far been the best browser thus far.

one of the main reasons i never used Mozilla was cuz i couldnt stand clicking on the ugliest looking icon (dinosaur head or whatever) on my computer so i deleted it.

But is that thier new logo? i dig that crazy fox/world logo. looks nice. :)

Tabs on bottom coming right up!

Put this code in your userChrome.css (http://help.mozillazine.org/firefox/edit.html#css) (texturizer.net/firefox/ is busy)

/* Display the Tabbar at the bottom */
#content > tabbox {-moz-box-direction: reverse;}

Tab Browser Extensions (TBE) (http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en) can put tabs on bottom also abut it can be buggy sometimes and may slow down browser for some people.

If you want I could post the code for to have tab bar on the left side. tabs will still be horizontal though.

I wonder what animal the next upgrade will be? Perhaps firecat? Have you seen this yet? http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/firefox-name-faq.html

Anything else? :D

yea i found a lot of that and the exention stuff.

its a nice program still. worthy of being a nice backup. still on the buggy side from what i've seen. but its new, so is to be expected. Maybe down the road when this becomes more stable, and gets all the options and stuff right it can replace Opera. but for now. its going to be a nice backup program for me, and one to keep an eye on. :)

Thanks for your help Seven7, plus rep. I switched back to the default theme, and my scroll bar and my back and forward buttons returned. Its working perfectly now. And Im in the process of transfering my profile settings and stuff.

*searches for a new red theme*

Heh Null... I find Opera to be quite crashy for me as to probaly why they give you the option to resume last session. There is a "session saver" extension that does this quite well for Firefox come to think.

Vampyr , any themes in particular are you looking for as I might be able to find a version of it that should work in Firefox 0.8.

I Just want something red. :)

When I think Firebird or Firefox, "red" comes into my mind. So I am particulary interested in a red theme, especially a red & black one.

The one I was using on Firebird was called "orbit red". It was a nice red theme, but no black.

I just got the official .zip version of Firefox 0.8. Other then the a bit of a annoying extension installation bug it is working nicely so far, until I go back to nightly trunk builds again. :D.

Bah. The best theme for Firefox is by far Noia. But it's not updated on the themes page.

You have to d/l the .jar file from here: http://files.deviantart.com/f/2003/51/0/1/Noia2_11.jar

And install it from here (in the install other themes section):

lynchknot's themes are the best :p

http://home.comcast.net/~lynchknot/fthemes.html

Vampyr: The Volcanic Alloy theme has red (more orange like) tabs so that is another option as the Alloy themes are sweet.

Unfortunately lynchknot still has a lot of themes to be updated on his site. He has been busy, sick and is still a little annoyed at the few times themes had to be updated since Firebird 0.7
Alot of his themes are based on http://www.maxthemes.com/themes/

Any body want spell checking in Firefox?
install:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6/windows-xpi/spellcheck.xpi
http://cgi29.plala.or.jp/~mozzarel/addon/firebird/spellchecker/spellcheck0_3_5.xpi

If you used the installer version of Firefox then add this as composer.xpt is missing in installer builds:
http://cgi29.plala.or.jp/~mozzarel/addon/firebird/spellchecker/composer_xpt_1_6b.xpi
OR you can get it from a .zip version and put it in the installer build manually.

after installing, restart Firefox, then right click in a reply box and select "Check Spelling"

even tho its a tad buggy....

And even tho i still find opera better...

this isnt a opera vs mozilla battle, its a every good browser in the world vs Explorer battle. and i gotta thro my support out to the good side.

That, and i dig this crazy logo so much it compels me to want to like it. I see good things in its future, its new and all the bugs will get worked out.

So because of all that, its earned a spot in my sig.

Well lynchknot's themes on that site itself are .jar files for downloading more then installing, so one way to install them is to copy the link on the theme you want and paste it in the "Remote URL"l box at bottom of the page and select Install, Or since you already downloaded it you can use the Local File box and install the theme.jar file of hard drive.

i myself set it so the tab bar doesnt close. i prefer it open all the time.

and it wouldnt even let me put the new tab button on the tab bar so dunno how you did that, you sure it isnt still in the customize box?

are you trying to get the tab window back or what? little confused about your situation. :p

Nevermind. I'm blind as hell and didn't see the option to restore defaults for the area. Now I can re-add the New Tab button.

Heh, I didnt even see the option to keep the tab bar open. Thanks for pointing it out Null because that helps alot (blind again:p). +rep

I'm not 100% sure how it happened. But I swear the button went into the tab bar because I didnt know at first that if I have 1 tab open, the tab bar doesnt show. And after it closed, I reopened the tab bar and it wasnt there. And I've been trying to put the new tab button in the tab bar, but its not working so i dont know how it happened now....

*scratches head* The only button on tab bar by default is the "close tab" button.

You didn't by chance install the Toolbar Enhancements (http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/tbx) extension did you as that allows you to drag tool bar items to the tab bar.
Toolbar Enhancements: Permits toolbar items to be added to each end of the tab bar (primarily to allow the New Tab button to be placed in the tab bar), and to each end of the status bar. Just dragitems there as you would for any other toolbar.

There is another extension or two that may be able to allow you to have a "new tab" button on tab bar, Basic's is one I think but it is not listed at database I believe. If you did not install any extensions then that sounds like a weird glitch as I don't beleive I have seen anybody mention that problem before in Firefox 0.8 release.

Jonbo298
02-20-2004, 12:43 AM
I had no extensions installed when I did this. This was before I even knew firefox could have extensions (laugh at me, but I've never really used Mozilla much before). But probably just some weird bug.
