The GameTavern message forums are privately owned. This means we have our own rules which must be followed by all forum users. Please note that "Freedom of Speech" does not apply to privately owned message boards.

The following offenses can result in your immediate suspension from the board:

Posting anything of a pornographic nature

Antagonizing other forum users or attempting to start a flame
war. This includes fans of rival consoles making posts that
bash a console or person instead of adding something
constructive to the argument.

Attacking, bashing, or otherwise maliciously insulting
moderators or administrators

Posting anything of a racially offensive nature

Post-cramming or "spamming" in order to increase your
post/doubloon count

Advertising for a site in a place other than your signature

NEW RULE: In an effort to allow the Admins of GameTavern a way to punish unruly members of the Tavern, as of right now we are instituting a new form of discipline.

Designated Drivers.

Anyone who does not follow the rules of GT, particularity anyone who flames, is popping up as the instigator in several locked threads or anyone who is just being an ass in general will become a Designated Driver.

Designated Drivers will suffer the following:

No Access to the Arcade
No Attachments
Loss of access to their control panel
Signatures Deleted
Current avatar replaced with an empty glass (the mark of the DD)

All Admins can make any other member a Designated Driver, any warning issued to an unruly member should be considered a courtesy, and thus they are not required to give someone any prior notice. Bitching about not being warned or demanding to be served are sure fire ways to extend your dry period.

Reputation

**Note: Reputation system currently inactive

Every member has certain privileges which is based on their amount of reputation. Please note that your privileges are not based on the number of posts you’ve accumulated. The rank which appears under your name is the only thing that is post count dependent. In addition, you will gain 1 gold star for every 1000 posts up to 5000.

It’s in your best interest to build your reputation as it determines what you’re actually able to do in the forums. There are four promotional groups which you can reach by having a specific level of reputation.

P0 (registered user)
P1 Bronze (500 reputation or 1000 posts)
P2 Silver (1000 reputation or 2000 posts)
P3 Gold (1500 reputation or 3000 posts PLUS registered for at least 1 year)
P4 Platinum (2000 reputation or 4000 posts PLUS registered for at least 1 year)

You gain a certain # of rep points for every positive rating. The amount of points received is based on the rep power of the user who gave you the rating (default is 10). Ratings are made by clicking on the scales icon on the lower left corner of someone's post. If you receive 1 positives for 10 points each on 50 of your posts, that's 500 points of positive rep for you. This system will be tweaked based on how often people actually give ratings.

You gain one green pip for every 10 rep and a bright green pip for every 20 rep.

For every 182 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

For every 1000 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

For every 500 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

Must have 50 posts before your ratings will affect others.

User Groups

**Note: No new user groups being accepted at this time

If you are a member of the 2nd promotional group (Silver), you will have the option of creating your own user group. For example, you could start your own fan club if you like and you can choose which users belong to it. A forum will be created which only members your group can access via password. You must have at least 5 people initially for your group to be created. Each group will have a specific font/color that your members’ user names will be displayed in. A list of current user groups you can join can be viewed by clicking “Profile > User Groups.” Many of these will be left free for you to join unless a P2 level user wants to take over as that group’s leader. The leader will have minor mod privileges for that forum but will not be considered a member of the staff.

Your PRIMARY user group is the one which your main forum privileges are based. You cannot leave this user group (except by automatic promotion based on your reputation).

Your IDENTIFIED user group is the one you publicly identify with. Your username will be displayed in the style of the group you identify with.

Most of the user groups have no additional privileges; They simply contribute to your overall persona on the forums. For example, users who have been here for one year will become members of the “Seniors” group. This group has no additional privileges but it’s nice to have in your profile.

Examples of current or potential restricted groups:
Seniors: Here for one year
Veterans: Here for two years
Promotional groups #1-4: based on reputation
Skull Squadron: Neo’s groupies

Signature Restrictions
The maximum pixels allowed in a signature is 550 pixels x 200 pixels (That is... 550 wide, 200 high). That is the maximum size. Pictures can be smaller than either of those boundaries, but not larger. Text is allowed to wrap around, but you are not to break the 200 pixel limit.

Also, a size limit of 200 kilobytes is enforced. If you are found having a signature image larger than 200 kb, it will be deleted on sight. As well, if you put more than one image, then they shall only be no more than 200 kb in size sum.

And just to clarify that, you can only have one main image in your signature (Which can be no larger than 550 x 200). You can also use text and smilies, but only one actual image.

Here's the size area:

http://members.shaw.ca/commencer3/size.jpg

As well, there will be no extra size allowances. 550 wide by 200 high is the maximum size area. Signatures even one pixel larger than either of those limits are to be altered.

If you receive a PM from any of the staff asking you to change your signature, you are expected to do so as soon as possible. People that need help in changing the size and whatnot can visit the "Writer's Guild" board.

The doubloon currency system is now active. So what are doubloons and what can they do for you? Doubloons are small gold coins which you can use to purchase various items. :D To view what is for sale please visit the store. Since I activated the system a few days ago people have been accumulating doubloons at a much faster rate than I anticipated. Because of this I made some last minute adjustments to prices and earning rates. Prices may seem extreme but if they were more affordable then everyone would have everything they wanted in just a few months which would make the entire system pointless. I will be watching accumulation rates very closely and will make economic adjustments as needed.

POST CRAMMING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

If you make a reply or post a thread it has to be legitimate. Obviously there are times when a single smilie may be an appropriate reply, but if you make such replies constantly you will be fined. Likewise, if you get dozens of referrals but none of them ever post, your doubloons will be taken away. Just use common sense and don't abuse the system.

You'll notice in the store there is an item or two you can get with high enough reputation as well. This is why a positive rating is only worth 1 doubloon. There will remain items/privleges you can only get with reputation and others you can only get with doubloons.

Soon we will install a system which will let you gamble with your doubloons if you so desire.

Neo

I just discovered a flaw with the dblns given per positive rep, so that has been disabled for the moment.

Neo
01-31-2005, 12:17 PM
Alright, now the the number of doubloons you are given will equal 10% of the rep-altering power of the person who left you feedback. So if someone has a rep power of 10, you get 1 dbln for a positive rating from them.

Come to think of it the "donate" link is a little redundant since you can just click on "doubloons" and get to the same place.

now let me explain myself. if a member gets about 500 dblns a month, it would take them about 2-3 months to buy the cheapest thing in store. IMO that's a little too long...i think the prices should be lowered...just my opinion though. :)

I think I should get paid retroactively for all those mad sweet reviews I submitted for the homepage back in the day. :D

I have a question concerning editorials:

1. Do they have to be an editorial, or can they be previews or reviews for games?

2. Do you have to write them yourself, or post links to them links to them like Camfubot does?

I can't wait for the bookie system! That's going to be awesome. Can you get it up before the super bowl this weekend?

And I think that the idea about earning doubloons for every day that your arcade title is up is a great idea. It's like owning your own buisiness or having a job here at GT, and each day is your payday. Or you could do it weekly or biweekly, and up the amount earned. Like Drop said, this would give players much more incentive to play our games.

I also remember talking to Dylflon about a collectible card system a long time ago on MSN. The idea was to have collectible electronic cards (like baseball cards), based on various video games. There is a nearly unlimited amount that you could make, and we could buy them with doubloons, sell them, and trade them.

That would be sweet.

Neo
01-31-2005, 05:05 PM
Once the arcade has been convereted there may be an option for automatic payout for tournaments.

I was planning on bringing the vBookie on Feb 14th but maybe I can squeeze it in earlier. People won't have much to bet with though.

I'd prefer editorials, though I'll take previews/reviews I suppose. No they can't be links like CamFuBot posts, they have to be original material, preferrably with screencaptures.

Xantar
01-31-2005, 05:12 PM
In my opinion, this is all still pretty weak. Post for a while and you receive the privilege of having your name in italics? Ok, if you really get excited about that kind of thing, don't let me stop you. But sooner or later, everybody who wants fancy displays for their names will have it and then they'll have nothing to do with their doubloons.

I predict that by July, nobody is going to care about the doubloon system. After all, nobody cared about the previous doubloon system either. It's just wrong-headed to base these things on posts or by receiving them f rom your buddies. I liked it better when such things as custom titles and access to particular forums was handed out by the staff...for merit.

Again, if you do like the system, I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. It's nice of Neo to spend the time to come up with this system, but I still just don't care.

The ability to sticky a thread should so NOT be something someone can be able to buy. Any thread that needs or deserves to stay on top is usually stickied by a mod or admin anyway. Even if its not, its probably being revived every once in a while, like the picture thread.

If we keep the option to purchase the stickying of a thread, we'll only end up with some inane thread stuck up top of the forum. Hopefully some admin or mod would unsticky it, but it would still be a waste of the member's doubloons, and a couple of people's time. It would just be better to remove it...

IMO.

/me shrugs and walks away

Jonbo298
01-31-2005, 11:12 PM
Well, I think when the first sticky thread or 2 happens, there will obviously be a lookover by a mod/admin to make sure its not something "stupid" that should be stickied. If it is, I think it should be unstickied and either A) Given a chance to choose another thread to sticky or B) Only stickied for say 2 weeks or a month

Ginkasa
01-31-2005, 11:47 PM
But what's the point? What thread could possibly deserve a sticky that wouldn't already be stickied? There are going to be very very few threads that wouldn't be deemed inappropiate for stickying by a mod or admin. I think it would just be easier and more beneficial to get rid of the option rather than to spend time regulating it or coming up with a bunch of rules for it if someone ever chose to buy it.

Stickied threads allow members to enforce their ideas, thoughts, or articles upon other members without any risk of the thread sinking to the bottom of the list. Regardless of the subject of the thread, anyone with the funds can sticky it. I'm sorry Link, but that's the way business works. If you want climb to top of the GT Ladder, you better get used to the concept of: money = power.

Oh, and let's give people the ability to buy advertisements with their doubloons, too. Buy the option and you can make a thread dedicated solely to pimping your fansite. Combine it with the sticky option to ensure that lots of people will see it!

Oooh! I know! Let's give people the option to buy post edits. This will be a really privileged item, obviously. Make it worth something like 2,000 doubloons. For that amount, you will be able to edit anybody's post to say anything at all you want. You can get Perfect Stu to admit to lesbian tendencies. Or get Fingersman to hit on underage girls in the forum. It would be so worth it!

Edit: Ok...actually, the staff is ahead of me. For 2,555 doubloons, you can be moderator for a month. Which I suppose includes not only editing ability but moving, deleting and closing threads as well.

You do know I was kidding, right?

Advertising for another site other then your signature is against forum rules. Have you been gone that long that you forgot one of the biggest rules?

Jonbo298 has finally convinced me that we need to enstate [sarc] tags. Real ones, I mean. Preferably ones which cause the text to be read out loud over your computer speakers in a drawn out, mocking voice.

I think Jonbo was playing along with your sarcasm. All in all, the sarcasm failed. It's only successful if you don't have to support it or identify it in a follow-up post.

Yeah, but I really agree with him. It's worse than the reputation system in the idea that it circumvents the entire mod system. You do realize that anybody can buy that right? Somehow that seems more than a tad risky, but that's not the point. Mods have a position of power. They have earned their positions and maintain them. Allowing just anybody to buy that, even temporarily, just seems wrong to me.

But I'm not going to fight this battle. It's just an opinion and one I'm pretty sure is widely disagreed with. I know how excited you guys have been for this system to return so I'm just going to be quiet now.

/me fades into the shadows.

What are you talking about, jeepnut? I'm just expressing my agreement with Link1130 that letting people buy sticky threads is pretty silly. But since the staff is obviously not going to get rid of it, I might as well have some fun. And point out to Vampyr in the meantime that he's being patently absurd.

It just so happens that my sense of satire coincided with the truth in one case.

You just come off lately as if you are deeply disatisfied with a lot of what's happening here at GT whereas I don't believe that it's all that big of a deal. Sure it takes some authority from the mods, but since probably only dedicated members will be able to afford most of this stuff, I seriously doubt it will become a problem. In fact, I think I remember somebody winning mod abilities for a short period of time and that went ok. Sure some abuse happened but that's what made it fun and interesting.

Basically, I feel the doubloon system adds more to the forum than it takes away and while some of these purchases perhaps give members a little more power than most of them desearve, I really don't see it getting out of hand.

I guess I felt that you just seem to come off a lot more negative around here as of late than you used to.

Where do you get the impression that I think it's a big deal or will harm the forums or anything? All I've said is that I think the doubloon/reputation system is pretty silly and worthless. I always have, even back when I was a moderator. It's not as if I think that the forums will blow up as a result, but this is, after all, the third time Neo and company have put a new coat of paint on the system and tried to market it to us. The system is fundamentally still the same, so eventually people are still not going to care about it. I don't see why they insist on wasting their time, but it's not my call to make.

If seeing a criticism from me disturbs you so much, then wait for the staff to make some kind of useful and constructive decision (not that I really think they need to since the forums are more or less doing fine and don't need ot be messed with). Then you'll see me joining along with everybody else to sing their praises. Until then, don't think that me criticizing the reputation system is anything new. I've been doing it for years.

If the forum look never changed, people would then complain about it never changing. Once in awhile you have to give a forum a new coat of paint.

But to each their own. You can't please everyone in the world :p

Sorry to double post but I have an entirely different question.

In the Cash out section there is a "Buy a present for a friend". Any vague info you can give as to why I would want to spend/waste :p 425 doubloons on someone else

You won't be able to see them until you can afford it. Look at one of Dyne's posts...

Why'd Dyne get a donut and not us?

;)

How about someone make a GT shirt at pixeltee.com and we can add that to our uShop arsenal? Neo could buy about ten of them and then he could sell them for a high doubloon amount to compensate for his loss of $150.

I just discovered a flaw with the dblns given per positive rep, so that has been disabled for the moment.

I was wondering, while reading your first post, if you realized members could rep themselves if they just made a new name. :P

It's kind of funny you tried to use satire by being overly sarcastic, and then the overly sarcastic stuff had already happened. >_>

And if I was being "absurd", I'm obviously not the only one, because Neo is the one who made that a product to buy. How often do you think people are going to get enough doubloons to buy that? We aren't going to end up with a whole forum of stickies.

And besides, once a sticky thread does die out, and no on has posted on it in a long time, it can just be unstickied.

I just don't see what's so absurd about. No one who sticks around long enough to earn that many doubloons is going to waste them on something stupid, they are really going to want what they have to say to be important and worthwhile.

Just don't be so cynical.

Jonbo298 has now convinced me that we need to institute [metaphor] tags. They would indicate that a particular phrase is a metaphor and indicate what exactly is being compared to what so that confusions won't happen too often. You know, so that people can realize that when I spoke of a coat of paint, I was referring to the doubloon system and not the forum skin (which I've never commented on).

And Vampyr, yes. Neo is apparently being absurd.
