Wow. I've been playing this game for the past week and it is so much fun. The only two characters you get are Mario and Luigi and they're pretty much the same but still, so fun. You can jump to dodge attacks and hit buttons at the right time to deal extra damage. The bros. attacks are sweet . The puzzles are great too. I can't say it enough. This game is just plain fun.

I'm going to quote Dyne in saying "Those guys [Mario & Luigi] know how to party"

Pick this game up. It'll rock your socks.

I'm asking for it for Christmas, thanks for the good review. :)

I've had the game since it came out (along with MK: DD). I was playing it for awhile, then kind of stopped all of a sudden. Damn work and my ability to must sleep for long hours.

But its a fun game. I highly recommend it if you liked either Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario.

I thought it was awesome. Just a bit short with kind of a sudden ending. But that was probably just me.

I was going to pick it up today at Future Shop, but I split a Game Boy Player instead. I still have enough... I should probably pick this up on boxing day.

This game owns. I got it last week and the game is way too fun. It reminds me of SMRPG in some ways... Damn, too fun. It has that awesome Mario feeling. Pick it up today!

Best GBA game to date.

My brother got it for christmas, what a joy to play. I love the combat, its turn based but not in the boring way turn based combat usually is. It can be funny at times too. Gotta love the refrences to past mario games. The border jump minigame game is pure nintendo bliss. You just dont find that kinda thing anymore.

This is one of a very few turn based RPG's I like. I really hate turn based RPG's because they are so slow that my interest can't last for more then 15 minutes. But with M&L, they made it so while the enemie's turn is happening, you can actually do something. And have fun with M&L Jason!

It contains one of the most basic forms of turned based combat ever (attack, item, special, escape). Perhaps you guys haven't played enough RPGs.

I got it last night, I'm enjoying it. Nice graphics too. Why does the Game Boy Player logo appear when you first start up the game though? Is it specially designed for use with the Gameboy Player?

Yes, to an extent. It has a rumble feature.

It sounds like you must not have gotten into Superstar Saga that much (or the first Mario RPG). In real time you can dodge enemies attacks as they approach you. Or, in some situations, you can hit the enemy as he comes close to you as long as you time the hit button at the right time. Timed attacking is the basis of battle in Superstar Saga.

I've always preferred the Mario RPGs to most traditional RPG, well one being the character and the other is that for the most part you are always active.

I've played 70% of superstar saga and I've played nearly 50% of both mario rpg and paper mario. You think just because you can hit a button at the right time to dodge an attack that it makes this battle system an evolution in turned based combat?

The standard turned based combat in rpgs these days is nearly 10 times deeper than this combat. I'm not dregading the game or anything, don't take me wrong, it's a really fun game, but I knows me RPGs and this one is basic in terms of combat.

I'm glad its "basic" in terms of combat. I can't see Nintendo making a really deep Mario RPG thats similar to an FF game.

I agree, and again, I'm not saying basic is bad or anything, it suits this game just fine.

True. It doesn't need to have you remember 50 things. Mario games always need to have some kind of simple factor because thats the reason I come back to play any mario game over and over is because I can just jump in when I want. But maybe someday Ninty will make some kind of really deep Mario game to satisfy the hardcore gamers. Maybe a MMO mario game for the N5?:D

Yes. And its a helluva lot more fun. (not that all other turn based combat is bad, Grandia 2 comes to mind as one I really enjoyed)

I've played 100% of all three. Several times (twice for Superstar Saga). And yes, I do think it is an evolution. It's an evolution from the basic principals of turn-based combat. While all turn-based combat systems stem from a particular route, most of them have evolved in a singular direction. They all start at "A", but most of them went to "B". However, Nintendo went to "C". While "C" hasn't been developed to the extent that "B" has, I still prefer the basic principals that "C" offers in place of "B".

Like what you want. I like what Nintendo's done with turn-based combat and I can hardly wait to see what they do to further its development.

DarkMaster

Nintendo hasn't done anything with turned based combat. Square Soft developed Mario RPG which was the first to incorporate the "evolution" you speak of. How has that combat evolved since then? Paper Mario follows the same basic principles, and M&L is nearly identicle.

Like I said, Nintendo hasn't done anything drastically new, they do what they always do: find something their fans like and repeat it as many times as possible.

Further what development? The addition of a button press, a development they did not even make in the first place? Interactivity during turned based gameplay is not anything new, it is featured in many RPGs, and they involve much more than pressing a button at the appropriate time.

It is basic turned based combat, not by matter of opinion. And let me make myself clear once again: I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THIS. I do like the game, I like all the Mario RPG games, and this form of combat is on no hindrance to me. The problem I have is the comparison being made that all other RPGs are pale when confronted with these games.

I don't think the comparison being said by you makes other RPG's pale. I know what you mean. (But good on clarifying for some other peoples:))

In the woods, where you have to collect the 3 colored things, there is a large koopa looking guy blocking my way, that says something like "Nothing can knock me down...I think". How do I get past him? Nothing seems to work...I hit him with my hammer from the sides, I cant hit him from the front because it initates a conversation...

Jonbo298

Yesterday, I figured out how to knock down the big koopa guys.

*SMALL SPOILER*

You can't knock them down with the hammer

*End small spoiler*

I think where you are, you can't knock them down yet...but after you learn a few more techniques, you can knock them down.

Indeed. You will learn a technique. It will be obvious when you learn the right one.

How long have you been playing? Where are you at?

I beat it in about 11 hours (although, that timer could be off because I left the game running by accident a couple times).

Alright, the final boss is p0wning me. (I mean the one inside the belly) I start off okay, its attacks are easy to doge and so fourth. But later on the damn thing starts doing that lazer thing, which is dogeable but hard as hell to doge, and that stupid ball thing gets me every time. Besides, that, he gets to go like 5 times in a row to your once. Really a pain in the ass. Im gonna be so relieved when I finally do beat this guy. Any tips?
