I'm using my new computer after having to reformat it. It needed the reformatting when it would not even boot properly. It kept requesting a boot from a CD. After trying to restore files (yet failing), Windows XP needed to be reinstalled. The video card programs as well as the sound were reinstalled as well. HOWEVER, despite the sound working and the internet moving swiftly, the computer moves extraordinarily slow.

After reinstalling XP and nothing else, I noticed that the every window moved with extreme lag. The computer could not handle normal functions at even a regular speed. I then installed the game that came with the computer to test out whether or not the video card and sound were operational. After testing the game, I received messages that the computer could not recognize the sound or video card.

So, I took a break and tried sleeping, as I had lost a week of improving and using my computer, which performed excellently once before. When I got back from work, my father worked on the computer a bit and reinstalled the video and sound functions and also installed the components of the CD that contained the mother board information. I retested the game, and it worked... but excessivly slow. I thought that perhaps, somehow the computer did not recognize the RAM. Yet, when I check "dxdiag", it shows that I have 512MB of RAM.

I'll be calling IBuyPower tomorrow.

I'd appreciate any guidance if any of you feel you may know how to speed up the computer.

P.S. Reinstalling FFXI took over four hours instead of the two that it took once before.

it sounds like a problem in the bios
well as for the boot from cd thats in the bios
just hit del when the computer is starting and navigate thru the option till you get to boot options and change it there

if you have more then 512 of ram make sure its pluged in all the way

other then that refomat, unplug the compuer, take out the bios battery let it sit for a day turn it on and reinstall everything

ps. I was wondering why you wenrt on lastnight
i played for 10 hours and finaly reached level 17

Jeff I have to beat you in the forehead for that one, in the bios it sets itself what to boot from not asking to boot from cd. Normally what would give that message rndm is a cd that has a boot sector on it. I wouldn't worry to terribly much on that. About the sound and vid card not being recognized. Is it onboard sound. Probably not but I'd say it's probably a sound card compatibility issue they are probably trying to compete for the same IRQ port and in which is causing lag. Try switching coms on it

(edit) oh and jeff le die for that comment :P

I've got a good feeling that neither of you fully understand what I posted. That, or it's just that impossible to fully understand what you two type.

Open up the case and make sure everything is in there tight, no loose cards or anything.

thats not very good adivce
I remember reading a funny article about that some guy called into tech support after he did that (acually he found a bunch of loose cords and just started to plug them in random places) and told the tech after he did that the computer made a loud poping sound and is giving off alot of smoke the tech told him to call the fire dept. and the call asked if ther was a way to back up the info he had on the machine :)

Thanks to Ominub, Bond, and a friend's help, I discovered that the problem was due to the Video card... what was wrong is that, while the card was properly installed, a driver was not installed as well. Since I had no CD for it, I had to download it from online. Now my computer works just fine. Thanks for the help though, Hero.

Lemme guess...Nvidia...

Ive had my computer from Ibuypower for 6 months now, almost no problems, except for a little one where the fan makes a helluva lot of noise during bootup. But it quites down afterwards.

I just got to this thread. I was thinking you might have had a problem with your Motherboard for a minute there (thank God I was wrong). Glad everything worked out.

By the way, BIOS is: Basic Instructions Operating System. It's used for keeping everything working harmoniously. It keeps track of your system setup and a lot of other stuff that I really don't know a whole lot about myself.

Well, I joined this a little late but I too was thinking it was something with the video card or the drivers if it was saying could not recognize vid. card and/or sound card. But at least you got the problem solved:)
