View Full Version : First PSP Concept Model

In a presentation further explaining Sony's Transformation 60 restructuring plan, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi showed one of Sony's first concept models for the PSP, its upcoming handheld game system. While the model isn't intended to represent the final product, it does show Sony's design ideas moving in some interesting directions.
Most conceptions of the PSP have envisioned a clamshell design like that of the Game Boy Advance SP, but this concept obviously favors a simpler, one-piece, horizontally arranged design. The Universal Media Disc loads into the back, and there's a loop for a handy carrying strap in one corner.
The perfectly smooth face certainly looks sharp, although it raises questions about the ergonomics of the directional control. It looks as if it would be pretty easy to slip your thumb off the smooth surface and hit the power button underneath it. This concept also seems to be missing the analog stick that Sony confirmed would be part of the unit earlier this year, unless there's some sort of pop-up analog controller on the left side.
This image provides more food for thought than facts upon which to base hard conclusions, however. We look forward to learning more odds and ends about the device leading up to its planned unveiling at next year's E3 exhibition.

lol, funny you brought that picture up, thats the picture that originally was the PSP, it could play Playstation games and stuff, but the only reason Sony didn't want it as the Official PSP is because part of the CD was sticking out (in other words, u could have used it as a buzz saw if you needed to cut something)

Damn, not bad. Looks cool, but not as sexy as the SP.

are you kidding? that there would put SP to shame. makes SP look like a little brick sitting on a pile of dirt.
i dont think thats how it will end up looking. i think the buttons on that would be a little strange.
but if it did end up looking like that. that would be SLICK AS HELL.

Hell no! It will never put the SP down, unless if Sony can come up with some crazy ports like FF7, MGS, GTA, and online support somehow... Then I'll agree with you. :)

Ehm... just wondering, is this thing supposed to play PSX games?? Cause it doesn't look like any CD would fit in.
Then of course, Sony wouldn't make money on the games, since most people already have PSX games. :)

No, because the PSP has its own format. Your probably mistaken that it can play PS1 games if its ported to the PSP.

you just totally changed the subject.
you were talking about looks. you said it didnt LOOK as sexy as the SP.
and the SP doesnt LOOK sexy at all. this LOOKS sexy, and therefor p uts the SP to shame. hands down.
now about features. i dunno yet. have to wait till its finished and they release every thing. IMO it will prolly have better features too.

PSP has a chance at being the first handheld system I ever like. All it needs is a few PSOne RPG remakes and I'll be the first person in line to buy one.

I'm glad that that's not the final design. That thing looks like it would be very easy to scratch up, unless it was some sort of cover that I'm not seeing. Does that have shoulder buttons?
Anyway, that's a nice concept design. Looks like the screen is a bit bigger than the SP? Anyways, nice and sleek and shiny, I like it.

It's just a concept design. The only thing it shows is the direction Sony is trying to take with the handheld. It's also suppose to have an analog stick, which does not appear on this design.

actually if that whole Dpad moves then it might actually feel nicer then a normal.
but it seems to me you didnt read anything that goes with that prototype model. even they mentioned the buttons will prolly change. this is just an indication of the direction they are trying to make it look.
And i've never seen one that looks slicker then that.
the GBA SP looks like a block. im not saying the SP's design doesnt work well. but its not appealing to the eye. as far as looks go. the first GBA kills the SP for looks.

Good point. I would be really pissed off If I scratched the other thing right in the beginning.
wouldnt really be THAT big of a problem, just have a nice case to put it in or a little sleeve.
my ipods metal, and i take that everwhere, has yet to get a scratch.
Anything scraches if ya dun take care of it. I really hope it is metal like that tho. Not that i'd be buying it anywho tho. hehe :p

Eww. At least its only a concept. Looks uncomfortable, the screen looks easily scratchable, and the buttons are bad.

This is not a final design. The final design may very well be completely different. It's obviously not designed ergonomically yet, which is why it looks somewhat uncomfortable. It's a concept design, that's it. Take it for what it is, but it will most likely have little similarities to the final product.
also. if this is an indication of the direction sony is going.... the PS3 is going to be one SLICK AS HELL looking beast.

Let's hope the SLICK AS HELL theme applies to the graphics as well as the looks.

I thought the PSP was supposed to have PSX-worthy graphics... that would be how they could succesfully port PSX games.
Oh dear God... if they're able to pull off functional 3D graphics on a portable... *drools*. I personally don't like 3D, but maaa-aan, that'd be a feat.
gimpy. read up. :p that joke you just said WAS indeed what i was talkin about. i said PS3, wasnt talkin bout psp :p so you just kinda repeated my joke.

lol, i wasn't sure, so i just made it obvious for the less intellectual members...like happy :D, but Randoms right, if they ported FF7:drool::drool::drool::drool:
Although James Bond: Nightfire was a three demensional shooter with the same maps as the Console versions, it's pretty fun, although you can't aim up or down

See: Ngage. :P They practically ported Tomb Raider right over, and Tony Hawk. Good 3D.

Hm I wonder if I'll enjoy 5 year old 3D graphics...
The point is, 2D graphics on handhelds are polished. So it looks very beautiful.
3D on a handheld looks grainy.
I sure hope Nintendo will continue to pump out good 2D games for the next GB, alongside 3D games.
Now that I think of it... a portable version of Perfect Dark sounds good! :D Even with old graphics...
