I really want a laptop, but the only problem is that most of them seem to go over $2000. I am not really good with specs and laptop stuff, but can anyone help me out here?

I want a decent laptop, not some crap.

This might help...

I want something like a Pentium III or maybe IIII (depending on price, but most probably a III), a lot of Hard Drive space for programs like Kazaa, Photoshop, a few games, and some videos of some TV shows (like the Simpsons, and other...)

Obviously I want to go online with it, so how much will a wireless router cost me? =/

Can anyone tell me what the best one is out there (Probably VAIO's, but just want to make sure). Remember, I want a decent one that doesn't cost too much. I am talking about minimum price starting at $800- probably $1500 max.

Any suggestions?

honestly, laptops dont run games well. they really wernt meant for it. and if your looking for one with the the power to run good games decently. thats where the big price is kicking in.

you should be able to find a P4, with like 40gigs HD, and 512MB ram for a decent price. most have onboard gfx, but some you can find with a geforce or radeon in them.

try the dell website or gateway. I hear toshibas are good. but prolly more pricey.

I run an IBM Thinkpad, and it works really well. It only had one problem with it a few weeks ago, and it was covered by the excellent warranty. Fixed within 3 days.

For me the only laptop i'd buy is a mac one. POwerbook or Ibook.

I'm really getting sick of the XP OS. Don't really wanna go into Unix, but I love Mac Osx.

Actually I may buy a G5, as long as Blizzard games run on it :D

I'd suggest a Mac laptop as well but they're all beyond your budget.

And bobcat, I don't know about StarCraft but I know WarCraft 3 and Frozen Throne are both Mac compatible. And now would be a good time for you to get a G5, the newest OS X upgrade (10.3) was just released, Panther.

Crono-Link, is it possible you could hold off a bit longer until you have some more money? Whether you get an Apple or PC, it'd be in your best interest to get a preminium laptop that will allow you to do more and last longer than get something in the medium price range that'll only last a few years.

Very off subject:

GameMaster, your signature says I am the "proud owner of the original 5G iPod". I have a new 40 GB iPod...

Ok, thanks guys.

I have more questions.

Screw games, I have a desktop computer with a GeForce 4, so I don't need games for my laptop. I just want to have online compatibility, be able to watch videos like The Simpsons and other TV shows, listen to music, download from Kazaa, create designs with Photoshop, write reports or other documents, web design, and some other stuff.

So the best games I could get will probably be oldschool emulation... That's fine as long as I can do the other stuff.

I know even some of the crappiest laptops can run those things I mentioned in bold, but I don't want a slow computer, but something faster than 1.8 GHz will do, and remember the hard drive, I want the GB to be able to store all kinds of music, videos, and other crap.

So with all those things in bold, what will be the best laptop for me? I don't need an awesome graphics card, as long as it can run 16-32 bit games, I am fine. Thanks for the help guys.

Also, does anyone here have a laptop? If so, what kind? How do you go online? Wireless Linksys Router?

I don't use a wireless. I've wired it up for mine. It's cheaper and better.

I do all those things that are bolded on a pentium 3 chip. Anything equal to or above it should be fine. Emulation runs on this baby like a dream.

you could always get one of those new centrino chips, their supposed to be good for wireless communications

Hmm.. I think the alien ware laptops are the nicest I've seen but they cost an arm and a leg. So get the hacksaw out.

We use Linksys Wireless Router for our normal desktop PC since the cable is hooked directly to my iMac and it works great. The signal strength is always excellent and it even picks up other people's cable signals that live next door, lol (since they haven't secured their's). So if our cable ever stops working for some reason I'll just borrow my neighbors, hehe. =-D

I know, your's has a lot more space and all, and it also can play the cool games wheras mine can't, I just think it's kind of special that I have the original first iPod model. I also like the scroll wheel design better, but I still consider you a lucky goose since you got a brand new one. Anyway, just out of curiosity, how much of the 40 gigabytes do you use for your music? And do you use the remaining space to store files and stuff? I'm still happy with my measly 5 gigs, I haven't filled it up yet even though I have like 200 something songs. I would like to use the remaining space for iMovies I've made but they all exceed the remaining space left so I guess that's the advantage of having a 10, 20, or 40. So, I hope you're enjoying your new iPod and take care not to scratch the shiny backside! :D

What happened to your 15 gig?

I noticed that you can get brand new 30 gigs for 350$ on ebay, so I'll get one in december. I know I can probably fill up 15-20 gigs just with music that I own legally.

Unopened=Brand new

For my logic at least, I know the 40 gig is the new top standard.

Didn't read the whole thread
I have a toshiba.. can do all you want, under $2000. I got it from CompUSA. I had ordered a Dell, but they kept pushing the delivery date back, and I needed it before I left for school. This ended up being better than the Dell and cheaper.
Wireless, router and card ~about 120

Yeah comp usa does have alot of good deals.. Your best bet though is to find a store like ditcorp.com and check them.

Most of them are being sold by Compusa Auctions, and several others are being sold by the same people, 5, 10 at a time, I'm sure they're just dealers dumping backstock.
