In GameInformer mag Playstation creator Ken Kutaragi says "Playstation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software and the format will continue forever. Just like personal computers or music CDs, the format continues by incorporating it into new products."

thanks for the news Neo. I heard it a while back but wasn't sure if it was confirmed or not.

Bad news for FFVII fans who want to see a remake. Oh well, its all good, glad to see I can still play my 25+ PSOne rpgs on PS3.

By forever, do they mean that 25 years from now, we will still be able to play PSone games on our PS7s? Doesn't the current PS2 have a PSone chip built in? If I'm not mistaken, won't those chips begin to add up and take up considerable space? This is of course assuming current ways of doing things remain somewhat the same.

unless they put in the same chip just make it little better each time anyway xbox gets away with it(the size that is)

They say they use emulation technology to make it possible to play PS1 on PS3.

yep, 25 years from now a chip that is made to play Psx games could be as small as a grain of rice. The only thing that could stop Sony's plan is a complete change of the medium. In other words, something more efficient than a CD comes out. I think the HD is more efficient today, but it can't prevent pirating, so it will be something else less hackable to replace CDs.

That's where technology comes into play.

Engineers constantly package more and more stuff into smaller and smaller physical things.

Computers, for example, used to take up a whole room or whatever. Same with cell phones, cd players, and so on and so forth (er, I don't mean cell phones and cd players used to take up a whole room; Just that they used to be way bigger).

At least with Sony doing this, my older games won't get shoved into a closet somewhere (As was the case with NES, SNES, N64, and all that schtuff).

Now... will they be keeping the same controller? or will there be a new one?

I hope not, the playstion and PS2 controller is still the best IMO

since its backwards combatable it has to be somewhat the same.

hunch is they'll leave it exactly the same, i meant. dont mess with perfection.

on another note. Not sure if anyone mentioned this... But EGM's latest issue had the rummer that the PS3 will (out of the box) support PS1, PS2, PS3 games, plus PSP games too, without an adapter or anything.

only things they might do. would to be add a couple buttons either on bottom or face. but me thinks it'll stay the same so ppl can use old controllers on the new console.

It may just be an enhanced version of the DS2. But because the DS2 is already perfection as far as buttons, they may add some VMU type thing Dreamcast style and/or change the shape of the controller without losing any buttons.
