I was too lazy to read the article... but does it have something to do with the price drop?

Yes, it does. Now let's see if this continues or it just turns into another temporary peak in the graph.
My guess is that unless fans get taken in by the software fast, this won't last too long. It's a shame Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy both got pushed beyond Christmas.

Think what will happen when the PS2 gets lowered to $99 *assuming it isn't already there*... people with broken systems will be able to afford the quarterly replacements ¦¬Þ, sales will skyrocket

I really don't think so. Almost everyone has a PS2 already... And for the broken PS2 owners, well, I just got my PS2 back from Sony, and they fixed it for free with no charge.

I hate it when people say that...
I mean sure it seems like it would make sense y'know, it's been out so long, people who want it would have bought it, right?
But at the same time, price drops open it up to different crowds... Maybe some people were like "I'll buy a PS2, but not for more than *whatever*"... Maybe some parents were looking to buy a system for their kids, but didn't wanna spend too much (this happened at the end of PSX's life)... And then there's always people just getting into gaming...
And replacements for broken systems, etc etc...
I plan on buying an Xbox... But have I? No... And I probably won't for awhile...... So probably when 'everyone who wants one has one', I'll buy one...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...
Calm down, it was just a thought.
Obviously the PS2's sales will go up when it gets cheaper, and so will Xbox when it gets cheaper, but the fact is that whoever needs a PS2 has already bought one (or two), but whoever isn't really a big gamer will just go ahead and buy it at price drop just for the hell of it. There are people in this world who will buy a PS2 just for collection, not for fun like we do.
The Gamecube on the other hand is a different story. There are many people who are gamers and probably own a PS2, PS1, or even a N64, but no Gamecube. These people are gamers, but never bought a Gamecube because they never were sure it was worth the money. Now since it got a 50% price cut, the demand is much higher...
The PS2 will do good too, but not as good as the Gamecube's improvement since there are still a lot of gamers looking for a Gamecube. Just about every gamer already has a PS2, right? A gamer who doesn't own a PS2 is a very rare gamer, but a gamer who doesn't own a Xbox or Gamecube comes often. Do you get what I am saying?

Good point. But just wanted to mention that my mom bought two GameCubes just because of Zelda: Windwaker

Thanks.
I bought 2 PS1's (1 of the messed up...) for FF7.
And I would also like to add that this price cut will affect games like Zelda: Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, along with a few other titles.

Things are looking grim for any sort of price drop this year for xbox and PS2. Xbox has a bundle pack for the holiday season, and I dunno what PS2 has, but their modem bundle is 200 dollars I think.
I hope the drop helps sales during the christmas seasons... really, most of the little kids I know say that their parents won't buy them a Gamecube because it's too expensive.

Im thinking they should've held this price drop off until closer to Xmas, because parents and such who were thinking about buying one for thier kids for christmas, would have that much more incinative. Whatever the case, more console sales=more game sales=more $ for Nintendo.

I talked to my buddy today, who works at toys r us, and he said that yesterday (saturday) he sold tons of gamecubes and gba sp's as well. i think the price drop was a good move.

Actually Nintendo did good to change the price now. Billy tells Mommy he wants a GameCube for Xmas. Mommy says its too expensive (but mommy is stupid on console prices). Then mommy decides to investigate and see's its only $99 and the other consoles are $180.
And about this time is when some parents/kids start asking what they want for Xmas. Hell, my grandma already wants to know what I want, heh. So dropping now is better then waiting until like 2 weeks before Xmas.

OMG!!
C-E (http://www.cube-europe.com/news.php?nid=5523) has a link to GameCube Advanced (http://www.ultimategamez.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1065473121,28213,). They apperanty edited the news item and deleted the sales figures. They pretend to link to Nintendo of America, but when you hit the link, you come to the home page of GCA.
I believe that GC outsold the other consoles, but I won't believe those figures yet.
