First, NHL 2004 demo by EAsports was released today

Vancouver Canucks have signed Magnus Arvedson. He should add more depth and speed to the second line and ease some pressure off of the bert/naslund/morrison line. Jiri Slegr is with the canucks now so that fills in Murray Baron's shoes. Johan Hedberg has been brought in so the canucks have some more depth in the back up goalie position. And last, Darren Langdon is with the canucks. I think the canucks are a much better team this year and have an extremely good chance of being #1 in the western conference. full roster can be found [URL=http://www.canucks.com/theteam/roster.asp?sectionID=23]here. Detroit has some goalie issues to work out with cujo:). I'm sure they're trying to get rid of him but with his no trade contract it's going to be tough. Colorado is still a viable option if they can get an agreement going. I think Hasek can carry the team through the playoffs. He might not be at his 100% until the second quarter of the season but he's better than cujo's broken ankle. Probably better than cujo with a good ankle. Losing Federov is probably bitter sweet. He's got the talent, but was a drag also. Hatcher is going to be good for Detroits def.
detroits roster can be found here. (http://www.detroitredwings.com/players/roster.asp)
Colorado is looking kind of scary. They've brought in some great guys and have a great chance for #1. Abeeshier(sp?) imo isn't a number 1 goalie. I think Teemu Selanne and Paul along with Sakic, Forsberg and Hejduk are going to make the most potent offense in the league. If they get their goalie stuff worked out...possible stanley cup just as long as another minnesota wild or mighty ducks don't come along.
team roster can be found here. (http://www.coloradoavalanche.com/team/team.html)
I don't see Dallas as being quite as dangerous this season. The other elite teams in the western conference have all become even better...I don't think Dallas has.
team roster here. (http://www.dallasstars.com/team/roster.cfm)
I can see Minnesota continuing to improve greatly. They have great management/coaching. Gaborik just might be a 50 man some day.
roster can be found here. (http://www.wild.com/index.cfm?section=team&cont_id=roster&roster_id=26)
Edmonton. Edmonton is a playoff team. They're going to do good this season. Calgary. Calgary as of now isn't a playoff team, or even close to being a playoff team. I love them, but it's going to be atleast 2 seasons before they have a chance at getting back in...unless a mariacle happens in their organization.
As for eastern teams. I don't see Toronto doing as good this year. I foresee them not making anything above 7th place in the east. Ottawa has improved their power a bit and New Jersey has signed the oldest in the league, Igor Larionov.
Anyone have more roster update info about the eastern teams, feel free to add.

I like their new jersey! Good stuff.
I can't wait for this hockey season. I agree with you about the Leafs... But you never know about them. They could come out and play some really good hockey and surprise all the doubters... But that is what leaf fans say every year, but whatever.
And how good does NHL 2004 sound? I made a thread about it yesterday in the Dungeon, but then it never showed up. I was truly pissed off.

I'm loving it. It sucks having to use the keyboard for it though. With the 2 button pass layout and the charge up hitting, the keyboard just doesn't work that well. I want to get a PS2 controller/PC converter.
The game feels a lot more like real hockey. I'm loving it. Much different feel than the last few NHL games. It will take a while to get used to for all of us who have played NHL 2002/03 to death.
I consider NHL 2004 to be the dawn of the new simulation gameplay. It's vastly improved over last year, but needs tweaking.
I'd give NHL 2003 a score of 8/10. NHL 2004 I'd give 9/10.
so far my first impressions have been great. The new developer of the game just needs to settle into yearly dev of the game and it should be by far the best hockey game by 2005/06.
Haven't played ESPN 2004 but from the reviews it sounds really good. If I had a PS2 or xbox then i'd give it a rent and make my decision from there.
Detroit has some goalie issues to work out with cujo:). I'm sure they're trying to get rid of him but with his no trade contract it's going to be tough. Really its more of a money problem. Or maybe just an awkard feeling.
but Hasek is detroits goalie. The fans know it, The players know it, Hasek knows it, Cujo knows it. Theres no dispute whos going to be in net and everyone already knows cujo is all but traded. The no trade is no big deal, Cujo already said he'll wave it. Wings said they have a few people that are interested. Rangers being one of the leaders. but rangers would want to give lindros and wings arent 'really' wanting lindros with his prone to injuries.
He'll be traded soon tho. just have to see where and for what. Detroit will most likely pick up a lot of his salery still tho.
As for NHL2004, its pretty good, far better then 2003. Takes a little getting used to tho, but feels much harder and more realistic. The graphics are better, players actually look like who they are supposed to. instead of computer generated faces.
Have you gotten in a fight yet tho? Fighting is GREAT. you are given a choice if you want to fight or not now. As your playing a little light would pop up at the bottom and say fight? you can just keep playin or if you press i think the line change button? (not sure which it was) it jumps into a fight. The actual fighting is one of the best i've ever seen in the NHL series. your grabbing jerseys, leaning in and out to dodge punches, trying to get your arm free then wailing on the guy. etc. I had a LOT of fun with the fighting.
And just goto RadioShack, i got my PS2 to USB Adapter there, for $10
works great. and on thier website it says they have a newer one now for same price that supports rumble feature (rumble is the only thing mine dont do on PC)
I'll play ya sometime when the game comes out Bouncer. online play is fun fun fun :) and if you know who you want to play its free. (not sure what they're doing this year but last it was a montly payment to use thier service to match you up with others online. but free if you know the others IP address)

Off topic, why the hell did the canucks ever change their jerseys/logo? Those new ones SUCK. God, the old black/red/orange with the hockey skate was so cool.
actually i like the new logo better.
i dont like the blue and green color stripes however.
I personally like the old green/blue hockey stick logo the most. But, the new third jersey is close enough. I like the dark read and blue border but the green and blue border for the third jersey is kind of eye catchy.
damn I'm looking forward to hockey season. Not playing this year though. it takes up every weekend I have and practices are a pain. Kind of sad but I don't have the time to fit it in with my other stuff.
And ya, I've only won two fights in 2004. It's hard.
And I really want a controller for this game for sure. I was going to get it for the cube but decided no cuz of the whole, can't play my friends online thing. So ya, gotta pick me up a adapter and PS2 controller or get a GC adapter from liksang. I'd rather not buy it online but then I have to pay 30 on the new controller.
have to think that one through a bit. I've got until 22nd.:)
And besides Null, is there anyone else here who is getting this game for the PC? going to be fun.
meh, the jersey didn't go through. Kind of pissed. I liked the looks of it way more than the canucks current third jersey. It doesn't look different enough. Oh well. Maybe next year they'll take on that design.

I don't see those anywhere yet. If it's true, then bring on the old Hartford Whalers. :)

Ahh, preseason starts and 3 fights (or more?) already. Hockey rules.
And on the subject of jerseys, The Whalers' jersey is ten times better than Carolina's. And I like Vanouver's third...

I liked it when Antropov fought that Sweden guy. That will teach him not to throw checks in a friendly game.

Ouch... that's gotta hurt.
Too bad for Snyder... But really, who the hell doesn't wear a seatbelt nowadays? His critical condition could have been prevented.
They had to be drunk. Crashing at 130 km/h. The alcohol tests haven't been released yet.
ya, the charges for heatley...could end up with a 15 year sentence.
What a mistake. Rookie of the Year and then you do something like this. If Snyder does come around then Heatley better hope he'll drop the charges(considering snyder doesn't suffer severe brain damage)

I figure I might as well talk about what I see happening this year in the NHL. The west looks like it will still go through Colorado, Detroit and Dallas this year--but of those three its a toss-up. The avs have all-star ability at lines 1 and 2 but no real skill from the lower lines and a huge question at goaltending. The Wings have Hasek and perhaps the best defense in the game, but how much longer can Yzerman play like he has and they lost their biggest playmaker (and maybe their biggest problem,) Federov. Dallas is still strong but how will they fare after losing their defensive leader? I think the East is more simple...Devils play boring hockey..Devils win. I hope to god some team will beat the Devils, no matter how...Im tired of the damn neutral zone trap. Its not hockey, at least not hockey thats exciting and enjoyable.
The homer in me is mad tho that the Avs didn't take a run at Cujo, Burke, Khabibulin, or even Felix Potvin. I hope that Aebischer and Sauve are up to the task, because if they're not, we might be too far back to secure a good playoff spot (or even to secure A playoff spot).
That having been said...thank god the NHL's back.
Well, Snyder has died from his injuries. And the courts are considering upping the severaty of Heatley's charges.
Sucks to be him. I mean, such a promising rookie and then something like this happens to him. Hard lesson learned I guess.

Hard in a sense that he has to cope with the fact that he killed his teamate, a friend.
Vancouver 5
Detroit 1
nully.
Wings gotta pull of their socks.
update: nucks lost to st louis.
weight cross checked sedin in the face. I'm hoping for a 3 game suspension at least.
Well, bert scores with 8 seconds left to force the overtime.
Philly socres. I wasn't even expecting a point from the game so the OT loss is better than nothing.
Any boston fans here?

ah. sorry, havnt been checking here lately.
Yes, slow start for wings. its like half thier team is injurded. =( but hey, we will see who laughs last =) as long as we get our players back by playoffs it will be ok.
zetterburg should be back in couple weeks. and hasek is back from his groin injury now. I just wish hatcher didnt go down so early. he wont have much time to get to know his new team this year.

The Flyers are actually scoring goals this year. :hmm: We still haven't lost at home this year too, and that is always a fantastic adavantage. Esche and Hackett have been playing pretty well, but it still concerns me that they don't have a standout goalie.
*pulls out his pocket size canucks schedule*
well, I can't find anywhere else where the canucks play philly. Only one game between the two it appears.
And, I hate philly style hockey almost as much as minnesota. Clutch and grab is such a bore.
Thank god the nucks aren't playing in new jersey next. 3 boring games in a row, don't know if I could handle it.

Leaf's Joke:
Three hockey fans were on their way to a game in Montreal when one noticed a foot sticking out of the bushes by the side of the road. They stopped and discovered a nude female, drunk and passed out. Out of respect and propriety, the Ottawa fan took off his Senators cap and placed it over her right breast. The New Jersey fan took off his Devils cap and placed it over her left breast. Following their lead, the Toronto fan took off his Leafs cap and placed it over her crotch. 911 were called and, when the fire officer arrived, he conducted his assessment. First, he lifted up the Ottawa Senators cap, replaced it, and wrote down some notes. Next, he lifted the Montreal Canadiens cap, replaced it, and wrote down some more notes. The officer then lifted the Toronto Maple Leaf cap, replaced it, then lifted it again, replaced it, lifted it a third time, and replaced it one last time. The Ottawa fan was getting upset and finally asked, "What's the deal, are all firefighters perverts or something? Why do you keep lifting and looking, lifting and looking?" "Well," said the firefighter, "I'm simply surprised. Normally, when I look under a Leafs cap , I find an a-hole."
Canucks joke:
It is game 7 of the Stanely cup playoffs in Vancouver and the series is at 3-3. The game is a sold out show. Every seat in the building is full except for one seat beside a man in the third row. Out of curiosity the woman on the other side asks the man who that seat belongs to. He replies, "Well you see m'am, that seat belonged to my dear wife. Her and I were Canuck fans our whole lives. We had seasons tickets this year but sadly last week she was killed in a car crash and so she couldn't be here with me tonight." The woman thought to herself how sad that was and asked him, "I'm so sorry that she passed away, but couldn't you find a friend or relative to come to such an important game with you?" "No", he replied, "They are all at the funeral."
this one isn't really hockey related...well canada/hockey.
HALF A HEAD
A man walked into the produce section of his local supermarket and asked
to buy half a heaf of lettuce. The boy working in that department told
him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce.
The man was insistent that they boy ask his manager about the matter.
Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, "Some a-hole
wants to buy half a head of lettuce." As he finished his sentence, he
turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added "And this
gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half."
The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way.
Later the manager found the boy and said "I was impressed with the way you
got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on
their feet here. Where are you from son?"
"Canada, sir" the boy replied.
"Well, why did you leave Canada," the manager asked.
The boy said "Sir, there's nothing but whores and hockey players up
there."
"Really!" said the manager. "My wife is from Canada."
The boy replied, "No kidding??? Who did she play for?"
Two guys from Ottawa die and wake up in hell. The devil stops in to check on them and sees them dressed in parkas, mittens and toques warming themselves around the fire. The devil asks, "Isn't it hot enough for you?" They reply, "'Well, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit eh". The devil decides they aren't miserable enough and turns up the heat. The next morning, there they are, still in parkas, toques and mittens. The devil asks again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you guys feel it?" Again they reply, "Well, like we told ya, we're from Canada, land of ice and snow, and we're just happy for a chance to warm up a little, eh." This gets the devil steamed up. He cranks the heat up as high as it will go. People are wailing and screaming. He finds the two Canadians in light jackets, grilling sausages and drinking beer. The devil is astonished. "Everyone down here is in misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves." The two Canadians reply, "We don't get much warm weather in Ottawa. We've just got to have a cook-out when the weather is THIS nice." The devil is furious, and decides to turn all the heat off in hell. The next morning, icicles are everywhere, people are unable to do anything but wail, moan and gnash their teeth. The devil smiles. He finds the two Canadians back in their parkas, toques and mittens. But now they are jumping up and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men! The Devil is dumbfounded. "When I turn up the heat you're happy. Now it's freezing and you're still happy. What is wrong with you two?" The two guys from Ottawa look at the devil in surprise, "Don't you know? If Hell freezes over, it must mean the Sens have won the Stanley Cup!"

Um..Go Flyers...whee...big home and home with the Devils this weekend. Biggest test of the season, the flyers can't seem to beat Ottawa or Jersey, ever. Hopefully it'll be different this time.
Nazzy scores in over time to beat the canes.
Great goal. Setup by bert.

yeah I know, old thread, but I would just like to comment on the thread starter, what was that about the leafs finishing no higher than 7th in the east? I believe as I right this, they are FIRST in the east, and fighting for FIRST in the NHL.
