I was bored today, so I decided to take apart my old computer just mainly for fun, and possibly learn a few things along the way. I got the cover off, and I saw the two 64mb sticks of Ram(It's got 128 MB's). I took them out and looked at other various parts of the computer, but when I stuck the Ram back and tried to turn the computer back on, it keeps beeping every 5 seconds. Im not sure why, I put the RAM back in...Is there some special way your suppoused to insert RAM into the slots? I opened the latch things, and stuck it in nice and tight. Also, would it do me any good to put the 128 MB's RAM into my new computer to make it so it has 640MB's RAM?

Your new computer probably doesn't use the same type of RAM.

And try turning the RAM stick around. You might have them in backwards.

Depends. Did your old computer use PC100 or PC133 Ram? Or DDR Ram? And does your new computer use PC100/133 or DDR Ram. I'm asking because you can't use PC100/133 Ram with DDR Ram. (Found out when I was getting a motherboard and accidentally bought PC133 Ram instead of DDR Ram.) And about the beeping. Make sure they are both in the correct way and all the way down. Just being up a small bit can make the motherboard act up.

When I first upgrading computer parts, I figured out that sometimes parts aren't all the way in even though it feels like you couldn't push anymore without breaking it.

Especially with RAM. With RAM, make sure that the RAM stick is far enough in so that the little white arms that click to hold it in place are all the way vertical. But I wouldn't just try to force it in if that's the case; try taking it out and putting it in at a better angle.

Actually you can have SD (pc133) and DDR ram together. there is some motherboards that will do it. But only for the AMD processors. dunno why.

Also you cant have the ram in backwards. theres a notch that stops them if they are pointing the wrong way. (unless its REALLY old ram)

unless you knocked something else out or made another plug loose. then all i can say is make sure they're in all the way.

If you were referring to what I said, I was talking about how you can't put PC133/100 Ram into the same slot as DDR Ram. But if a mobo had 2 or 3 slots on it, 1 or 2 being SD and the other being DDR, its possible.

True. When I was adding a cd-writer to mine, a bunch of the clips and stuff (the IDE cable, the power plug, yadda yadda) felt like they were in as tight as they could possibly go, but things didn't work, so I just tried again with more force and they snapped into place.

Stupid tight-fitting technological garbage.

uhhhh. but if the slot already has something in it, how would you put something else in it anyway?

im not sure what your talkin about now.

if your refering to, you cant put DDR in a slot thats meant for SD?

SD and DDR look pretty much the same. from what i seen of the motherboards that can do both at once the slots are all the same and the board detects which kind is in each slot.

however what it sounds like your saying is you cant put DDR ram into a slot that already has SD ram in it.... well if thats what your saying......well duh!

but once again. im just confused as to what the hell your talkin bout now. lol :p

Im talking about how you can't put a strip of DDR ram into a slot on the mobo that is SD only. I bought SD and my mobo needed DDR. So I took it back and got DDR. DDR and SD use different slots. Thats what I'm basically talking about. Im not talking about putting ram into a slot thats already taken:p SD and DDR use different connectors also.

You can't put an SD stick into a DDR slot and visa versa because their is a little notch on both kinds of sticks (the notches are in different places on each stick). So even if you tried to put it in the wrong type of slot, you can't.

There are motherboards with both types of slots. You can't use them simulatneously. The DDR will fry, or hte SD will?...no the DDR will fry. I had a computer illiterate friend do that, dumb a-hole. He paid for his mistake. You can have either-or, but not both.

strange old chinese man at computer store had them running both at same time. thats what im talkin bout. now its silly and pointless, but it CAN be done.

what ends up happening is the motherboard ends up running both types of ram at the lowest speed, so it pretends the DDR is SD in a way.

which as i said is pointless and there are VERY few mobos that will do it. actually im wondering if the even make them anymore cuz i havnt heard about them in a long time. But it is possible to run them both at the same time on the same mobo.

and yes the notches are in slightly different spots on each diff type.

My old RAM was PC100 I believe, and my new stuff is DDR I think. So that rules that question out. But as for the other question...you think I just dont have them in perfectly most likley? They're probably kinda like old NES cartridges...they gotta be in perfect to work...I'll keep trying, thanks.

EDIT: OH, and the RAM does have those notches and its impossible to put it in backwards, I tried.
