1st public gay high school set for NY

NEW YORK, July 28 — New York City is creating the nation’s first public high school for gays, bisexuals and transgender students.The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco’s first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

“I THINK EVERYBODY feels that it’s a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. “It lets them get an education without having to worry.”
The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.
The new school’s principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.
State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.
“Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong,” Long said. “There’s no reason these children should be treated separately.”
The Hetrick-Martin Institute’s Web site says the school will give its students “an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community.”

Very true. Our culture and every other culture in the world is built around the easiest thing to do. No one ever creates something that requires work. For example, do you know why nuns and monks arent allowed to get married? Because when they got divorced it was a huge pain for the church do divide up the land. So they took the easy way. Well keep in mind, the only reason bathrooms are divided by gender is to prevent people from being uncomfortable. Of course, that's assuming people are straight.

You didn't get the full article from the NY Post, which I thought was a better read as it had some humorous but true quotes in it.

I mean really what is next? We start a school for obese kids so other students won't make fun of them? I mean if they can have special education programs inside of a pre-existing school, why not this?

And to be honest, where the hell does the city get money to waste on this? In the last few months, property tax, sale tax, transportion and so much other crap has risen due to our debt, and we got money to waste on this crap?

There are tons of schools that are overcrowded or well just bad, but they do nothing about it.

Well you can't divide, even excluding bisexuals. If a guy couldn't be with another guy, he would need to be with all girls. Ok, so send him to the girls bathroom. Now we still face the girl/girl problem. Mixing everyone together doesn't work either.

It's impossible, without pairing up guy/girl and having a ton of bathrooms.

GameMaster, your logic has been proven wrong through past usage. Remember segregation? Remember the video and pictures you saw of black people being hosed and beaten for trying to enter a white only restaurant? Did segregation SOLVE any problems with intolerance, or just create more of a rift in the classes and allow the races to further their ignorance? I mean, better yet, we should let all gay people move to a whole different small continent, and then we won't have to be bothered by them at all. Or maybe we should MAKE them. This is a COP OUT along the same lines as blaming violence and crime on video games and the movies. Instead of trying to cure the disease we find it is much easier to treat the symtom and allow the disease more air to breath and room to grow.

I prefer to look at gays as people, and not zoo animals, which is what every kid who goes to that school will become. Its very hard for even the more heated racist to justify torturing someone who is just standing there. Now if the civil rights movement would have gone the way of revolution, our race relations today would be VERY different and filled with violence and animosity and possibly even a war that would have resolved itself in racial cleansing. Think of the big picture.

Is violence against gays wrong? There is no question, but going the way of segregation will do NOTHING to stop it, and it will most likely only make things worse.

i think its a waste of money, and they should just let them live their lives out around every other student, it just might be healthier for them, making a seperate school means seperate social fundings and other money sucking things, i dont think they should single them out and make them a special school.. what about mexicans and blacks, should they get there own school just for being different, but then wouldnt that be called discrimination and prejudice?? what is the U.S. coming to these days......

There are also some other shows focused around the gay audience, but Im not sure the names of those.

Awe the new string of reality shows, have they really run out of good ideas?

I mean there is that, Queer as Folks and some other show on Fox I believe that tries to match up gay men with other men, but not all of the matches are gay or something like that.
