"July 03, 2003 - Although it's only 2003, midway through the PlayStation 2's current cycle, IGN has learned a handful of publishers and developers are colluding together to begin work on PlayStation 3 games to be published in 2005.

The sources are numerous and widespread, but the murmurings have begun and they're getting louder. At this year's Electronic Entertainment Exposition in May, IGN learned that a veteran English developer (who asked to remain anonymous) officially attained PlayStation 3 documents outlining the general specs, from which they'll base one or two early game designs. Since games take about one-and-half to two years to design, it makes sense to start a PS3 game for a 2005 publish date.

IGN acquired information on several additional publishers putting together deals with developers to position themselves in 2005 with new games for the next-generation systems. Those publishers include THQ, Activision, Electronic Arts, Take-Two and Capcom. Also, current rumors support Rockstar North's early work on a next-generation Grand Theft Auto. We're sure many more publishers are on working on similar projects. For instance, in yesterday's (7/2/03) Game Daily newsletter, wanted ads have been posted for jobs to work on PlayStation 3.

Recent tidbits have flowed from several Websites indicating that the PlayStation 3 will be backward compatible with PlayStation 2, but not with PS one. So, the PS2 is backward compatible with the PS one, and the PS3 will be backward compatible with the PS2, but not PS one. Additionally, Sony plans to have only two systems in the market at one time, so once the PS3 gets swinging in 2005, it'll drop production on PS one.

Numerous sources have said outright the PS2 and Xbox are merely testing grounds for fully-fledged (and perhaps better throught out) online campaigns on the upcoming systems. And many companies, such as LucasArts, are looking at games such as Star Wars Galaxies and unofficially saying that it cannot be done on current generation systems. Instead, that game is far more likely to appear on PS3 and Xbox 2. IGN also suspects, knowing Rare's slow development cycle, that even the sequel to Perfect Dark will appear on Xbox 2, instead of Xbox.

Finally, now that we've reached the mid-way point in the current generation, IGN has learned publishers are beginning to switch their kids titles from the PS one to the PS2, which enjoys a huge penetration point in all regions of the world, while simultaneously starting on their new PS3 games.

We'll have more on news surrounding the PlayStation 3 soon"

(I bolded the part that made me put in fight club instead of the Ps2 forum)

So, they still plan on releasing PS3 in 2005?

Now lets make sure companies follow through with what they announce. I'd really like to see a Perfect Dark game soon, but with Rare, they are too slow. So I hope PD gets the full treatment next gen. if Rare decided to hold off until then.

I'm guessing rare is having the same problems as the guys who are making Duke Nukem Fornever.

They work it, but the cycle is so long the bar keeps getting rased higer.

First, it had to be on par with halo.
Then Doom 3.
Now it's HL2.

And who does IGN think they're kidding. Like they've got some inside scoop.

Everyone is guessing that PD0 will get delayed until next gen.

Sad thing is that there was no mentioning of Square Enix as a developer in that article. ...Could it be...?

Well, for one thing, that isn't the full developer list. And, I highly doubt that Square Enix would stop developing for Sony.

By the way, I hope PS3's launch will be better than the PS2's launch. The PS2 launch was crappy. Not only were there shortages, but nearly all the launch titles sucked (except SSX and Madden, I think).
