Cowboys Safety "Fine" After Gunshot Wound

June 30, 2003, 10:08 a.m. (CDT)

DALLAS - Cowboys safety Keith Davis suffered multiple gunshot wounds early Sunday at a Dallas night club, authorities said. The 24-year-old, was shot in the right hip and left hand about 2:20 a.m. Sunday morning. Davis and a club security guard were taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Davis was treated and released at 7:33 a.m.

Davis' fiancé, Amber Davis, 31, said later in the day that he was doing ``fine.''

Davis' status for training camp is unknown. The Cowboys open camp in late July in San Antonio. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, who is on vacation, could not be reached for comment.

``The whole thing started out inside and spilled outside to the parking lot,'' Dallas police Sgt. Paul Morris said.

An altercation broke out inside the club between two women and spilled outside into the parking lot, culminating with the shooting, Morris said.

Amber Davis said she and Keith Davis drove to the club after closing time to pick up a friend. The friend was sitting at the table where the altercation occurred, but he didn't know the two women, she said.

She said she was walking to her car when a green vehicle drove up and a man reached out of the car and tried to grab her, putting a gun to her head.

Police were told that Keith Davis began to fight with four occupants inside the car. According to a police report, Thompson was pulling him from the car when four shots rang out.

``We have absolutely no reason why they tried to shoot us,'' Amber Davis said.

Thompson was shot in the left hip and right arm. His condition was unavailable, officials said.

The incident is being investigated by a detective, Morris said.

Davis spent most of the 2002 season on the Cowboys' practice squad. He played in five games at safety and on special teams for the Cowboys last season. He was credited with five tackles, two quarterback pressures and one pass breakup at safety and with eight tackles on special teams.

Davis was a two-time all-state and all-district wide receiver and defensive back for Italy (Texas) High School before going on to earn Southland Conference defensive player of the year honors in 2000 at Sam Houston State.

The incident involving Davis is the third for the Cowboys since the end of the 2002 season.

Cornerback Dwayne Goodrich was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident Jan. 14. Goodrich, who was cut by the team in February, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of failure to stop and render aid. He is awaiting trial.

On May 11, running back Ennis Haywood, 23, died of unknown causes. Haywood became ill at his Arlington home May 10, fell into a coma and was pronounced dead when his family decided to take him off life support the following day at the Medical Center of Arlington. A preliminary autopsy report showed no obvious cause of death. Officials at the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office are still awaiting results of a toxicology test.

The players wouldn't have to worry about being shot if the team moved out of Texas. Gun hippies.
