Ok, I have a decision to make that will pretty much determine my future. I’m trying to decide whether to continue doing marching band, or to do field hockey. I can’t do both.

Band: I love to play the flute, and next year, practically the whole band is looking at me to be Wood Wind Captain and the “leader of the flutes”…I’m not necessarily looking to be in band in college. When you’re in band in college, it takes over your life...I don’t want that. So, in other words, I’m not looking for a scholarship in band. Granted, I have a lot of fun in marching band, but it takes up pretty much your whole summer. You’re constantly at practice, and if you plan to have a job, well you can’t. You can, but it’s hard to find someone who will give you that much time off.

Field hockey: Like band, I love to play field hockey. I’m a sporty girl, so...it just…fits me. On top of that, the field hockey coach was talking to me and told me how she’s seen me, said I have a lot of potential. Also, she said that she knows I could go to places like Australia, like she did, for field hockey. She said, “To sum it all up, you could give LHS field hockey a whole new meaning”. I want to play field hockey in college, and I am looking forward to trying to get a scholarship in it.

Ok well also, many people have told me that colleges like it when a person starts something their freshman year, and sticks to it throughout high school. In my case, that would be band. So I don’t know if I should just stick to band and look good for colleges. But then again, I don’t know if it’s worth it, because I already have scholarships right around the corner for my academics.

All in all, I don’t know if I should do what I want to do (field hockey) and let people down, or just not let people down and do band. I know that the obvious answer is to do what I want to do, but it’s not that easy for me. I’ve always been a kind hearted person, and hate to let people down. To me, the worst feeling, besides losing someone you love, is to let people down and disappoint them. So, I don’t know what to do, and like someone else said in a previous post: “What do you do when you have a problem or question? Ask GT” ;)

So, what would you do? Thanks in Advanced.

Just remember, this is for YOU, not anyone else. Sure some people may be 'let down', but I'm sure if they were any kind of a friend to you, they would know that what you would choose is the best thing for YOU, and understand it.

Obviously, we can't tell you what to do, that's up to you, but I'm sure nearly everyone here (though I can't speak for everyone) would say that this decision you make is more important for you than anyone else, don't go making decisions that would please others, and not help you in the long term.

Field Hockey. Definately.

The fact that I'm in Australia has no bearing on that decision...

Lol nah, do whatever you think is right, and which one you enjoy more.

I also say to do field hockey. Although you may let some people down if you don't do band, if you do, you may regret it for the rest of your life.

Hockey. You like both, but the only one you feel you want to do further in life (college) is hockey. And it could get you a scholarship which is worth letting down some people on band, Im sure they know that your future is more important then their own personal gain in band.

I'm a big supporter of the benefits of sporting. You like field hockey, it sounds like you excell at it, see a future in it and can help you get into University. I don't know the importance of 'letting people down', but field hockey looks to be what I would do if I were you. Something tells me that you'll be fine with whatever you choose though, 'rese ;)

As my band teacher has always said, always stick with band, under EVERY circumstance. It helps so much in your future and looks good on your resume. But fine, if you're a sporty girl, go for the sports. I say Band and it's been working for me, too. Mind you, I've given up a lot of sports but found something right for me--Karate. Karate isn't that time consuming if you're good at it. You just need to stretch every day and go to the lessons at the right times, and the rare tournament. But you don't have to attend it all the time.. and you could still do band. I don't know, just best of the both worlds.

F*ck college and what looks good.

It's what makes you happy that truly counts. It sounds like you enjoy field hockey more. If that is so, then do it.

My opinion is to go with Band. It will follow you through to College...As will hockey, but band i would think more so.

The more free money you get the better... you will most likely get paid for being in Band, so I say stick with it.

After reading everyone's comments it seems like if I were making the decision, I would be even more confused after reading what all of you just said. lol

I just think that you should do what you want to do, like you said, your academics for scholarships, so just do what you want to do.

I suck at making important decisions like this. Always have. Thats why im not going to say anything. Although I would tend to lead towards whatever makes you happy, like other people have already said.

ok well, it comes down to this: both of those things are lame. HOWEVER, field hockey is just a little bit less lame. and i DOUBT you will have a career in either of these...and if you did, the money sucks, so it wouldnt be important anyways.

I feel you've given enough time to band to have it be recognized. The reason why I'd join band is just to say that I know how to play an instrument.. and you can already say that. On top of that, the flute is one of the best instruments out there, heh. Oh, that and the violin... *thinks* Oooh... how I liked that oriental girl with the electrical violin.

Anywho, what I'm saying is that... since you don't plan on taking Band to college, not much more would be gained with one or two more years (except for the experience of being "Wood Wind Captain")

Field Hockey is a new experience, and being part of a team is quite a bit different than playing casually with a few friends. If you commit to field hockey as well as I assume you had commited to Band thus far, then I presume you'll get very far... (never knew there were scholarships for field hockey though).

What I'd do is pursue field hockey, continue practicing the flute in my spare time, and then look for more options as far as careers go.

G'luck with the choice. Whatever you choose though, make the best of it. No regrets.

Ok first thing first. Forget the aspect of letting down people because when you make descions in life not everyone is going to be happy with your descions, so get use to people looking unfavourably or being disappointed at the descions you make, because only time can tell if you made the right one.

I do believe your happiness plays a significant role in what you want to do, after all if you are a successful person and unhappy is the success really worth it?

I honestly think your worried about making the descion because your afraid that the descion you make might be a mistake or the so called wrong descion. But hey everyone will make mistakes so don't be afraid to choose one and go at it with your all

What you could also do is talk to the people in the particular fields you are interested in and see the long term benefits and see which one you would like better in the end( don't only talk to the succesful people talk to the people that haven't been so successful as well, who knows maybe your feelings might lean towards one )

Then based on your feelings towards them after that make a descion but make sure at the end of day that you can stand back and say I'm happy with the descion I made. :D

And matt, I could care less what mom and dad want me to do. lol

Track 13 on the Spinal Tap record Break Like the Wind is a song called "Christmas With the Devil". It goes:

The elves are dressed in leather
And the angels are in chains
(Christmas with the Devil)
The sugar plums are rancid
And the stockings are in flames
(Christmas with the Devil)
There's a demon in my belly
And a gremlin in my brain
There's someone up the chimney hole
And Satan is his name
The rats ate all the presents
And the reindeer ran away
(Christmas with the Devil)
There'll be no Father Christmas
'Cause it's Evils holiday
(Christmas with the Devil)
No bells in Hell
No snow below-
Silent Night, Violent Night
So come all ye unfaithful
Don't be left out in the cold
You don't need no invitation, no...
Your ticket is your soul

I hope that helps.
