BZZZZZT, wrong. DivX and XviD (my personal favourite) are movie compression formats, they only do the pictures. When you create an AVI (an AVI is just a container format, it can hold lots of other formats), you use one video codec to create the movie, and another format to compress the audio. Most movies out on the net use MP3 to compress the audio, a few use AC3, I use Ogg Vorbis. If you don't have a decoder installed on your comp, the audio/video won't play back.

If you need an AC3 codec, just chucking it into google should bring up a truckload of the things.

Also,
GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) is a little Windows app that will scan movie files (you can run it as soon as the first MB or so has downloaded) and tell you exactly which codecs you need for it.
