I listen to K-ROCK (WXRK; 92.3-FM) here in New York. They play alternative, and I didn't realize that they haven't been playing much music from female rock bands until some feminist group protested in front of the station on April 1 of last year. The DJ's who were playing music around that time let the protestors in the station, and they complained that the station doesn't play anything from female bands. The DJs argue that female bands just suck now. However, to appease the feminists, they said they'd change their format, and just play all female bands and then call the station "Fem-Rock". They play what sounds like Kittie doing an acousting cover version of Linkin Park's "One Step Closer", and the feminists are happy. Now here's the funny part. The DJ's just played an April Fool's joke on them, and kicked them out of the studio. Oddly enough, female listeners called in and even spoke against the feminists. Some of them even say that female bands suck.

I wouldn't mind if more female bands would come out of the woodwork though. Not many of them seem to be active right now anyway. At least not at the time when this all happened. No wonder they haven't been playing anything from female bands lately. I think the last time they've played anything from a female band was back in 2000, and it was from Kittie's first album. Plus since the station plays older songs from current groups, I guess they could also play older songs from female bands, or at least bands where a female is the lead singer (i.e: Veruca Salt and Hole) even though none are really currently active. They've never even played anything from No Doubt. The Donnas have a new album out now, and the station hasn't even played anything from them, even though the DJs had them on for an interview. They've been playing songs from Evanescence lately though, and that's a band where the only female is the lead singer.

I like Evanescence's song from the Daredevil soundtrack. Thats about it for female rock people that I like.

Okay, but they weren't a rock band though.

I hate the variations of what you can call bands, to confusing for my simple mind.

Do the Spice Girls play any instruments as well as sing during their acts? No. They're no rock group, let alone a band.

Right on Jonbo.

Anywho... I find femenists downright hilarious at some points. Angry that female rock bands aren't being played? Well, I don't know of many female rock bands to begin with, let alone good ones (but... then again, 1 of two is good, which is a nice 50%). How about blaming the lack of outstanding performers? But, then again, I suppose that's blamed on big brother media, who is a sexist bastard, right?

Haha, I find the ravings of feminists humorous sometimes. As was said before...I know of very few female ROCK (Avril Lavigne, Missy Elliot, etc is not rock...that is Pop) bands. And the ones that do exist are not popular/ good enough to get regular play. If the feminists like the female bands so much then they should request songs and promote them...instead of protesting.

Avril Lavigne has been around for a year or two

Hmm, can you really call it a chick band though? That is, ones with just a female vocal.

Which reminds me... Garbage was awesome.

Would they still be considered rock (provided they were ever considered that)? Their first album was good, but the second and third are more dance.

I agree. Avril Lavigne might dress punk, but her music is just pure pop. I also agree with Rick; I don't think that females and rock/punk go together. Off of the top of my head, I'd say that Kelly Osbourne is the closest to rock that I've seen. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Avril Lavigne has a fashion consultant. I guess she needs someone to tell her what tie to wear with what wife-beater. CORPORATE ROCK SUCKS.

Long live Tool.
