I think most of us assumed that.

And stu: I accidentally hit the wrong button.

Well, Ducks drop Game 1....

IMO this REALLY hurts them.. i think they need the game 1 win in overtime for thier (to steal a term) Shock and Awe. and really it does happened. they shocked Wings and Stars with thier game 1 wins. then they need giggy to get in the other teams head.

be interesting in seeing how ducks handle game 2 now......... First time they've been down in a series this year.

--- In other NHL news.
Avs have confirmed Patrick Roy's Retirment, and say he will announce it tomorrow...............alls i can say is WOOT!!!! i dont like the guy :p

God I hope the Devils don't win... The same teams win every damn year. This year, the worst of them all, the most boring team by far could win it again. :( I think the Ducks will do better in game 2 by far though, ten days off from play-off games is a LOT.

And I know lots of people don't like Roy, but you have to respect his playing. He was probably the best goalie ever. He's pretty much the reason there are so many good goalies coming out of Quebec now, look at Theadore, Giguere... Who do you think these guys idolized?

Joeiss
05-28-2003, 02:56 PM
Yeah man... Giguere has like an identicle stance.

Perfect Stu
05-28-2003, 03:00 PM
I never liked Roy as a person, but as a goaltender he changed the way the position is played today. He's the one that really introduced the butterfly technique which in my mind has allowed goalies to keep up with the evolution of hockey's offense - 100MPH slapshots, blistering fast skaters, smarter/deeper offensive schemes etc.

nWoCHRISnWo
05-28-2003, 04:03 PM
Even just looking at the two goalies in the Stanley Cup Finals, Roy was both their hero's. I wonder how many goalies idolized Roy growing up, probably a large percentage, most of the Canadian goalies at least.

Edit- Oh, and it seems like a new era in hockey almost. Especially if there was gonna be a strike coming up (god I hope not). Arguable the best goalie and best offensive player to ever play the game in Roy and Lemieux could both be gone soon (well, one already is now), Forseberg could be leaving soon, Selanne was talking about retiring, lots of players say they would retire if there's a strike, etc. The guys I grew up watching are leaving. :(

Damn this sucks. I would have rather had almost any other team win it than New Jersey. That 10 days off was such a bad thing for Ducks, but they're just getting outplayed badly now.

Null
05-29-2003, 10:51 PM
IMO it would of happened anyway time off wasnt a huge thing. they've had time off like that round 1. they had some after round 2. devils were warn out and beaten.

IMO the experience level is kicking in...... Devils know what to do now. they been here before. last time they where there, up 3games to 2 on colorado. they blew it........they're out for blood this time.

Teams like ducks make it to finals a lot, carolina. florida, washington, buffalo...... but they rarely do anything in finals except get swept.

Seth

go ducks

I still don't think they can win the series though.

But the Ducks are different than those other teams. Before the finals, barely anyone would have predicted that Carolina, Florida, Washington, etc. would have won, but a lot of people predicted Anahiem to win. Anahiem has a good system, they have a goalie who before this series was untouchable, and they got a lot of things going for them. The Ducks are a lot more impressive than the other cinderella teams. Anahiem only lost two games, and beat the top two seeded teams in the West to get to the finals, the other teams didn't.

they arent THAT differnt.

no one pridicted them to win round 1......... they cought some eyes. some predicted round 2, they raised more eyebrows. lots predicted round 3 for them... but come on. wild.

They woulda lost long ago if it wasnt for a goalie. Many other cinderella teams have had one aspect that has carried them far.

no matter how you slice it, they are a 7th place team.

yes they are better then past low ranked teams that made it that far. but they are underdogs none the less.

and IMO it often seems to fall apart for the underdogs in the Finals.

Last highly underdog team to do it......... Devils in 95. ;) hehe

Damn, the series is getting better by the game. The last two games have been entertaining as hell, especially the game tonight. What a hit on Kariya by Stevens, he just planted him. Then Kariya came back and roofed one on Brodeur though, so it's alllll good.

It turned into a good series, but damn what a ****ty way to end it. I hate the same teams winning every year. It would have been so awesome to have Kariya, Oats, Thomas, Rucchin, etc. hold the cup.

Contrats to Giggy with one of the most amazing play-off performances of our time, he deserved the Conn Smythe definitely. The New Jersey fans that booed him don't deserve to get any more cup celebrations. Sucks that hockey's done till next season.

Stonecutter
06-10-2003, 01:57 AM
Yeah, but hockey has one of (if not the) shortest off seasons.

June-October

as opposed to

Baseball
(October-April)
Football
(January-September)
Basketball
(June-November)

As for the series, Game 7 was suckey and come to think of it, games 5 and 6 weren't that great either.

I thought for sure the game was headed to overtime after the 1st period went scoreless but after the second devils goal it became pretty obvious that it was over. The Ducks just didn't seem to have anything left.

And Jersey fans, go suck on it. Booing JS, you morons. I guess it's fitting, seeing as how you're so close to New York. You just won the cup, how could he NOT have been the MVP of the playoffs?

Wait a minute, If you get 10 points for getting the conn smythe correct, how do I only have 2? Shouldn't I have 8?

I understand if you didn't total my points seeing as how I didn't get a chance but if you forgot to do it for everybody......

Jersey fans need to be slapped. Giguere carried his team through the playoffs. How many shutouts did he have?

did they think brodeur deserved to win the conn smythe?

yes actually they did. you would too if your goalie did that good and lost that trophe to the other teams keep.

brodeur did every bit as good.

Giggy got it cause he was such a surprise. single handedly carried his team much of the time. and worked his ass off.

he did deserve it. but the other contender was brodeur.

and the jersey team applauded when giggy won. they showed some class at least.

Perfect Stu
06-10-2003, 09:36 PM
Bah, I still think Brodeur deserved the Smyth. 3 shutouts in the finals? Record number of S/O's in the playoffs?

Meh, I still won though. Consider yourself owned ;) :D

Conn Smyth is for the most VALUABLE player in the ENTIRE play-offs. Nobody else even came close to Giguere. Without him, the Ducks won't even make second round, nevermind get to within one game of the big prize. You put any good goalie behind New Jersey and they would still be great. Brodeur had better stats in the final round, but overall Giguere was by far the best choice. If anyone from New Jersey got it, I don't think it would be Brodeur anyways. Scott Niedermeyer would be my pick.

I fully understand what the Conn Smyh represents in theory. Giguere, for most of the playoffs, was the most outstanding player...but he didn't (couldn't?) do enough to lead his team to a Stanley Cup. New Jersey would still be very good with another goalie, but they wouldn't win the Cup IMO without Brodeur. He shut out his opponents 7 times in the playoffs. His flawless play in those games alone won SEVEN GAMES. Gigeure is more valuable to his team (Hart Trophy points) but Brodeur outplayed him when it mattered. It's no biggie to me, since Brodeur got the trophy that really matters. I just wanted to pad my numbers in the pool ;)
