Microsoft matches Sony's price drop for the PlayStation 2.

Microsoft has officially announced that the retail price of the Xbox has been dropped to $179, matching the PlayStation 2 price drop that Sony had initiated yesterday. The price drop for the Xbox will take affect immediately at retail outlets across North America.

"Our commitment to the consumer is to offer the best system at the best price with the best selection of software," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president and chief Xbox officer at Microsoft's home and entertainment division. "This new price point for Xbox will bring the world's most innovative interactive entertainment system to the broadest audience."

Only $21, but still fairly important.

That's what I thought too. But I think that was just a reporter at the conference answering questions, not an official Microsoft rep.

I would buy the X-Box if dropped to $150. $179 still is too much for an X-Box.

There's 2 reasons why that's not going to happen.

1) The same reason why halo is still 50$. It sells almost 1 for 1 with every box, they're not going to throw away a sale like that.

2) It's rated M. No M rated game has ever been a pack in and this won't be the first. Forcing people to buy an M rated game can cut off a lot of sales to yonger demographics.

Well, it depends on how you defie a "pack-in" game.

Since technically, Resident Evil 0 was rated M and given free with the GameCube even if you did have a choice.

Instead of dropping their price, they added more.

But isn't the $179 us price drop only because they are claring inventory for when the new PS2 budle comes at it will be $199 again. ??

So if that were the case would the Xbox price go up again?

Ummm, I ment pack in as in PACK IN, in that the game is PACKED IN with the system. No M rated game has ever been a PACK IN game before.
