GAMER'S PERSPECTIVE

2003. The year of tactical combat. Enter Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain, the fourth installment in the long-running series that launched during the infant stages of the PSone.

The franchise’s popular protagonist, Gabe Logan, returns, but this time around you’ll be running missions for his reformed Agency to become an instrument of world peace. Through 17 massive, totally intense levels, you’ll snipe terrorists in Yemen, take out the Yakuza in Tokyo, and track the scent of the Spetznaz in Irkutsk.

With a cache of over 100 lethal weapons and high-tech gadgets, your international jaunts will hardly be the same ol’ stealthy gameplay of other games. Each operation is dripping with action, tossing players into relentless hand-to-hand combat, brutal knife attacks, full-on firestorms, and moments that require projectile precision. Master the fine art of warfare—or die trying.

Yet, the war on terrorism doesn’t stop in your living room. Linking up with the rest of the world is easy when you log online, teaming up with three other commandos via the Network Adapter. Plus, with a compatible, voice-recognizing headset (sold separately), you’ll be able to execute much more dynamic battle plans than you ever could using those cumbersome, cursor-driven keyboards"

STORY & CHARACTERS

The legendary duo return in Jak II, where Jak has grown into a mature young hero with a cynical attitude and hardened edge. Following the finale of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak and Daxter investigate a strange energy portal that propels them 500 years into the future where they find themselves in a foreign city. The city, under siege and ruled by the tyrannical Baron Praxis, is surrounded by a dark wasteland on the brink of destruction with menacing Metal Heads destroying the land.

Upon arriving in the city, Jak is immediately captured by the Baron’s guards and thrown into prison where he is experimented on with Dark Eco, where even he doesn’t realize the full extent of the hazardous substance. But with Daxter assisting in Jak’s prison escape, the two begin their quest to find out where they are, what has happened and ultimately seek revenge on the Baron. Along the way, Jak and Daxter will encounter numerous diverse characters greatly impacting the adventure they face ahead, while they brace themselves for the foes lurking within the shadows of the city.

GAMER'S PERSPECTIVE

In a future world ripe with conflict and despair, it’s up to the dynamic duo to once again bring about peace. This time, however, exactly two years since their last exploit, things aren’t quite so kid friendly. Jak is a hardened teen with a distinctively edgy, new look; and Daxter wise cracks more than ever before. The unfamiliar turf doesn’t help the situation, either, as nearly every character the team bumps into is seeking more than just planetary freedom. Greed is a common motive; fear is greater. And a penchant for betrayal is a given.

Unlike most follow-ups, though, the story isn’t the only aspect of the game that’s been completely retooled. Stocking a freshly devised arsenal of guns, Jak can depend on more than a simple spin-attack to knock out his foes—now he can pump ‘em full of lead. Transportation is also a big consideration, as players can hijack three different types of flying vehicles around town to jet from one level to the next, and a hover board offers up a highly energized transport that you can use anywhere in the game.

Graphics are a huge consideration in Jak II as well, seeing as the lead characters have been upgraded. All the major plot events unfold in over an hour of in-game cinemas, too, upping the ante of console games by aiming for a more cinematic approach."

STORY & CHARACTERS

Having defeated Chairman Drek in their last intergalactic adventure, Ratchet and Clank find themselves returning to a more sedate lifestyle…until they are kidnapped and taken far away to the Bogon Galaxy. Upon their arrival, they are propositioned by Abercrombie Fizzwidget, the quirky CEO of the largest (and only) corporation in the Bogon Galaxy, to investigate the whereabouts of one of Megacorp’s most promising experimental products, which has been stolen by a mysterious masked figure. Mr. Fizzwidget extends an offer that Ratchet cannot refuse; the promise of adventure that he’s been longing for, a fully paid health plan, access to new weapon technology, a penthouse suite in Megapolis…and the chance to receive training to become a certified commando. Meanwhile, since Clank is hesitant to reunite with Ratchet on another set of adventures, Mr. Fizzwidget lures Clank to stay by offering him a cushy accounting job at Megacorp.

It’s not before long that Ratchet and Clank find themselves entangled in action and mayhem. Follow Ratchet and Clank as they discover the answers to: Who is the mysterious masked figure? What is the importance of the stolen experiment? Are things really as they seem? Along the way, the duo encounters many dangerous foes, but with a plethora of the coolest and most inventive weapons and gadgets ever, Ratchet and Clank set out to destroy anything and anyone who stands in their way of discovering the secrets that lie behind “The Experiment.”

GAMER'S PERSPECTIVE

Now, we all know there are two kinds of sequels: The “get-rich-quick” sequel that relies on the success of the first installment to make a ton of money, but no real effort was put into it. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is not one of these, my friends. This is more along the lines of the “we didn’t really show you how much we can bring it the last time, so we’re going to serve it up something fierce again, just in case you thought we were joking.”

The hottest aspect is the fact that Going Commando has moved a little more into the RPG territory, with a cool action-based experience system. The more you do, the more enemies you blast into pieces, the more nanotech Ratchet gets. The more nanotech Ratchet gets, the stronger he gets. You can also earn money, use your money to purchase weapons and armor. Earn weapon upgrades with skillful weapon use, each upgrade to your weapon increases its power. Armor comes in the form of upgrades to your commando suit, with 4 levels of upgrades, each one further reducing the amount of damage an enemy can deliver.

And Ratchet isn’t the only thing in the game getting upgraded (Sorry, Ratchet, I don’t mean to refer to you as a “thing” but it leads into the rest of the piece better, you know). There is a bunch of awesome space-combat sequences, and you can upgrade Ratchet’s ship for these battles almost as much as you can upgrade Rathcet throughout the rest of the game. Hoverbike races are there too… and you guessed it, you can upgrade the hoverbikes. Upgrades everywhere! It’s madness, I’m telling you. It’s really cool to be able to feel like you actually are in control of a lot of the “other” aspects of the game, rather than it being “now you’re in a space ship fight.” You feel like what you’re doing actually has some impact on the outcome.

If you like Ratchet & Clank, you are absolutely going to love Going Commando. It’s more in-depth than a regular action game and it isn’t as slow and “resource-management” oriented than most RPG’s. Dare we say something like “the best of both worlds”? I think so"
