I'm amazed that nobody has made a topic about this yet! I mean, it's in America this time so I thought you guys would care...
Anyway, we got our first gold medal! :D
Our Jochem Uytdehaage was faster than your American guy and the German.

YEYE... Bronze in skating. Good job Canada.
Damn, 5000 meters!!! That is alot. Those people have got to be dead tired after their races.
The guys doing the downhill are insane. There's no reason to ever go that fast!

Renate Groenewold won a silver medal on the 3000 meters.
And that guy in the picture is a guy... it's just a bad pic!
Hey, your Americans sure made us laugh yesterday!! The ex ice-hockeyer sure was funny! :D And Kip Carpenter's first name means chicken here! :p (but he did ride a good time, better than our guys) But there's another chance for them today.
Oh yeah, that Wotherspoon or something fel. :(...:)...:D... ;)

Don't laugh at Jeremy Witherspoon Angrist!
*hits Angrist over the head with a skate*
:D
He was our best chance in speedskating :(. Well there's some other guy that placed fairly well I think but he probably won't win a medal  :(.

Round 2 begins in 3 or 4 hours, they all get another chance.
Angrist
02-12-2002, 03:37 PM
I was wrong. I thought they just got two chance to ride the best time. But they're riding for an average.... too bad for Witherspoon... (;))
Perhaps the Dutch Van Velden has a chance...
Angrist
02-12-2002, 05:05 PM
BLAST!!! :( :baby:
It's a nightmare scenario: Van Velden always was placed 4th, often only hundreds of seconds away from a medal, and today it happened again. :errr:
Turambar... (the Dunadan will know what that means)
Those American bast... I mean guys really were lucky...
Oh well, the 1000 meters is more 'our' distance. :)
Joeiss

Damn Wetherspoon, I cut out the picture from the paper. He looks like his heart was literally snapped in half... Arms outstretched while he was on the floor... Such a shame.
But he is VERY good in the 1000m race, so he better win that! Or else.:vader:
Did you see that ghost image they ran on the women's downhill? That was awesome! Just like mario kart.

Oh, I forgot to mention that whole "scandal" issue about the skating pairs. Canada had a flawless run, but lost to the Russians who I think fell once, but don't quote me on that. So, everybody is saying that the judges goofed up, so this is what I think will happen with the Men's Programs (well, it is what my mom thinks because I don't watch it) : Canadians (Stojko or those chicks who skate) will not win gold even if they deserve it. Why? Because if they do, and there is something just a bit wrong with the performance, everybody will think that the judges gave them the gold to make up for the whole pairs controversy. Meh, makes sense to me.
Oh, and does anybody else here think that Ice Skating should NOT be an Olympic sport? I mean, it is more of a competition, IMO. All of that technical merit and whatnaught shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Well my mom watches ice skating too. I don't, but I did watch the last three (Canadian, Russian and I think Chinese) do the whatever they call it and I have to say, they were robbed. I don't know a whole lot about figure skating but they looked dead on with everything they did and the Russians weren't as good. But you know what? It should be an Olympic competition, it just needs better judging. I mean the European judges have done this to Canadians many times before in skating (at least that's what my mom tells me :D) and they're very biased. And I think that, what's her name Selet? I think she's hot :sneaky:.

My bad! I was thinking about the 1000 meter short track skating event. Turcotte (Canadian) came in third, and an Australian came in first. I am not sure who came in second, though.
Apollo did. He lunged over the finish line to secure the silver.

Nice link.
The women didn't win anything yesterday... Marianne Timmer became fourth... :(
Hey, here's a nice quote from that site you gave:
After Cheek, American Kip Carpenter, the surprise bronze medallist in the 500m, was fourth, followed by Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands. The Netherlands may be a skating-mad country, but placing three skaters in the top five is a big accomplishment for the Dutch, who are much better known for their pre-eminence in the distance races rather than the sprints.

Hey, Uytdenhaage got a silver medal! Your Panna got a gold one and the injured Sondral got the bronze one!
I gotta admitt, Americans are good skaters this year... but your country is muuuuch bigger than ours so we're still the best ;)

Belarus beat Sweden?!? Hehe.....he........bahahaha!!! Oh man that's sad but so damn funny considering how Sweden looked to be the best team in the round robin and Belarus....well if you know international hockey, you know what I'm talking about ;).
Have to say the US looked to be the best team. not sweeden.
sweeden had 1 more win, cuz US tied.
but when looking at stats US has fewer goals against and more goals for.
But i was expecting a Sweeden vs US final. whats next Germany winning a hockey game? :hmm:
The Germanator
02-20-2002, 06:54 PM
The craziest thing was Belarus's last goal! Salo completley messed up. Damn, now Canada has an easy way to the finals, so it seems at least, I guess ya never know. And the U.S is up 5-0 now.
nWoCHRISnWo
02-20-2002, 07:28 PM
That was great! Mezin for Belarus was just... amezin. :D
I wouldn't say Canada has an easy road to the finals, because the Fins aren't exactly push-overs but that's not to say we won't win the game and go on to pound Belarus.
And I'd say Sweden looked like the better team throughout the preliminaries, but USA was a very close second. USA vs Canada for the finals I'm thinking. Most people were saying USA wouldn't even finish fifth, but I always said they'd finish strong.
And yeah, that goal on Salo was like it was destined to go in.

(speed skating just in case you didn't know) :) The 10.000 meters is on now. Gianni Romme rode pretty well, but I'm not sure if it's good enough. I think Uitdenhaage has a pretty good chance, so has your American Parra. We'll know more in 15 minutes. :beat:
