With the release of Def Jam: Vendetta, I have decided to pick up another console to compliment my XBox. The problem is, I can't decide which one. Here are the pros and cons for ME for each one:

Gamecube:

Pros - $50 cheaper... thats a whole other game included for the same price as a PS2.

Fire Pro game in development

Wind Waker

Metroid Prime

Quality system with good hardware

Cons - Sucky controller IMO (any good 3rd parties out there?)

Small Memory cards

No GTA

PS2:

Pros - Better controller

GTA series

Good RPGs

Tons of games to rent and own

Cons - Crappy hardware, that is shoddily made with common disk errors

$50 more than GC

Lots of games, only a few that interest me.

So what do you guys think? Keep in mind I'm picking it up tonight.

I've owned my PS2 for about a year and a half or so now, and the only disc error I've ever gotten is from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 I just bought off half.com... and I'm pretty sure it's from the scratches on the game (Like new condition my ass)... *shrugs*

I dunno what to recommend though... This being mainly an NGC board, I think most people are gonna say NGC, but I've gotten much more use out of my PS2... much much more... but with the recent releases of Zelda and Metroid (Well ok, that one's not so recent) and such then NGC is now officially worth the money I payed almost a year ago... :p

Get a Gamecube. You can get Metroid Prime as your free complimentary game that comes with the purchase of the Gamecube. Buy a wavebird, they're a little nicer than the normal controls, in my opinion. Then get Zelda wherever you can find it.

I thought I had finally decided on the Gamcube, then I remembered that Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven is on the PS2... the original is one of my favorite games ever...

DAMMIT!!! I just can't decide...

GC all the way.

Zelda + Metroid > any ps2 games put together

BTW, now that I'm playing DJV on the cube, I'm getting really pissed off by the controller. Isn't there something I can buy to play with my PS2 controller? Any info please? Or does anybody know if Nintendo has another type of controller or planning to make one? I just can't stand those L and R buttons. The N64 controller was perfect, why did they change it? :(

Well let's try it by match-up

Price
GCN-$150 with a free game
Ps2- $200

So in essesence, you can get a GCN with 2 games for the same price as a PS2.
But then you factor in memory cards, extra controllers and all those other accessories and they may run you about the same price, but for an initial buy, the GCN is cheaper.

Winner: GCN[/i]

[b]Controller
Well, I'm probably one of the few people in the world who dislike the PS2's controller, I may it works and whatnot, but I have never liked the analog sticks on it for some reason, while the GCN controller takes some getting use to, and even when it does the D-Pad sucks.
But from the time I've had with both controllers, I think they work greatly with the games designed around them.
Winner: Tie

Hardware
I can't really say from personal experience that either hardware is superior as I've never had a problem with either system, but my friends have. Some of their Ps2's stop reading blue back disc and others no games at all. Some folks have had problems with their Cube, but I believe that was more or less dealing with the game disc itsellf, I may be wrong.
Winner: Cube

memory Cards
I have never had any major problems, but for anyone who buys sports game and what not, I can see that the GCN small memory card sucks.
Winner: Ps2

Games
Well this is a weird one. For overall quantity, the Ps2 has the GCN beat in bulks, quality is a subjective matter so I won't touch on that.

Ps2 has in your words: Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vince City (which you can also get on your PC but eh), Tenchu, and a crapload of RPG

The GCN has Metroid, Zelda and well that's basically it.

The FirePro game in development is um, taking it time it seems. And other than Def Jam Vendetta, I think the best wrestling game this generation thus far has been SmackDown: Shut Your Mouth so while I have high hopes for WM XIX (much like I did WM x8 and we all know how that went), I think the PS2 has a large lead in wrestling games since it has a solid base to build upon.

And the RPG thing is really no competition, even though Skies of Arcadia is personally my favorite RPG of all time, you got atleast a dozen high quality ones on the PS2.
Winner: Ps2

What do I recommend you get? Well, I got both so I'm cool, but if I had to pick between the two, I would still go with GCN first.

The PlayCube:

Allows you to use any PSx or PS2 controller on your GCN.

I liked the n64 controller, but I don't have a problem with the Cube's one either, I liked the change even if the D-Pad did suffer.

I bought myself a PS2 during summer... I love the RPGs. Great RPGs on the system. Ps2 usually gets first games before being ported and stuff..

If you like RPGs, definetly get a ps2

On GC, my favorite game is Zelda. Metroid was pretty nice. And I also like the Resident Evil series on GC :p

I recommend PS2.. but meh

Does anybody tried that Playcube adapter? Are the GC buttons assigned to the PS buttons in only 1 combination? if so what is it? Or are you able to customize it? I looked on their site but it sucks so much.

You know what the odd thing is. I always hear people complaining about their ps2's having disc read errors.. I've had my ps2 for a long time and hasn't happened once. Perhaps people just don't take care of the system and leave it on the floor and stuff...

I would say PS2. Tons of games, GOOD games. But, I mean, to each his own I guess. Just get whatever system suits you better.

-The below is all my opinion-

P-s-2

GCN simply doesn't have enough quality games to compete... Ps2 got it coverd in Racing games, Sports games, RPGs, Fighting games, Action games, Adventure games, and it hhas a whole host of games that are simply fun. GCN's lineup just can't compete on all levels.

Ps2 also got the built in DVD player, online games you may be looking forward to, and the simply better controller. No contest imo.

Now, that we got which is the better console clear... you need one to complement your Xbox? Just think about the genre's Xbox isn't too good at, and ask yourself if Ps2 or GCN fills that genre up better or not.

I own all three, and I must say that GCN picks up the least slack.... besides Celda, right now there is nothing else on the console that I would buy before a whole host of Ps2/Xbox games. Maybe in the future Cube will get better, but I say go for what's better now.

Get what you want........which ever system you think has the games to really satisfy you, go and get it.

Well all of you have made excellent points, and in the end all this knowledge has proved paralyzing. Both systems look very attractive.

My guess is this is going to come down to me walking into EB, getting all the salespeople together, asking their opinions and then checking out the game libraries of both to see what intrigues me.

This is definitely going to be a tough decision. Thanks for all your help.

if it was upto me i would get the PS2...just because of Gran turismo, GTA, and Final Fantasy series...those are some of the best games ever...

I'd say cube by the absolute narrowist of margins. There'a a bunch of games that I'd love to own on PS2 but cube has metroid, Zelda, mario, monkeyball, Eternal Darkness and a whole bunch of 1st party games on the way.

You've already got an xbox, so you're set either way.

I got a Gamecube. Here were the deciding factors:

1) More for your money
2) More better first party games
3) GTA on PC
4) Techu getting mixed reviews.
5) Pre-owned Eternal Darkness at Blockbuster for $10.

I picked up a Mad Catz controller, a big memory card, Metroid Prime, and Def Jam Vendetta. The Mad Catz controller is quite nice, BTW. Much better than the first party, IMO. The first party is just too damn small. I keep thinking its going to slip out of my hands.

I wouldn't buy the Tenchu 3 game, rent or borrow first.

I've had my PS2 since Nov.5 of 2000 and it still works like new almost, I mean it plays some DVD movies better then my mom's new Panasonic DVD player.. maybe that was before they supposidly skimped on quality though or just plain dam lucky.

Gc only has one online game at noment right?

It's up 2 u, but for me GC fills the void in my gaming.

Ps2/Xbox are my general default consoles, GC is my special console to which I look forward to playing the most, mainly because of it's games.

Mario/Zelda/Metroid/ED etc

I think you would have been better off just getting the playcube adaptor, so you could have an alternative, official controller (unless you don't like the DS2).

I just haven't had any good experiences with 3rd party accessories (from the previous generation that is). I basically had my whole Rayman 2 file wiped out on the N64 (and Turok 2).
And for quality, you just can't beat official controllers. I've heard that the new batch of unofficial controllers for the Cube are pretty good, but just aren't as good in terms if quality, for example the official controller has a better analogue stick, and better shoulder buttons. While everything else is pretty much the same, except the size of the D-Pads :p.

I'm not entirely sure about what type of games you enjoy, but I guess anyone that truly enjoys games would like Pikmin, though you may want to wait for Pikmin 2. And try out SMS, it may get a bit monotonous after that 70/80th shine, but it's a brilliant game all the way upto those shines.

(And get Zelda with the bonus disks ;))

I tried playing Zelda and the controls confused me. I couldn't figure out how to hit anyone. I just kept on sliding around like a moron. I was drunk too, but thats beither here nor there.

Pikmin looks interesting just because of its unique nature, so I'll definitely rent it and Animal Farm or whatever its called. I WILL NOT be getting SMS. I despise Mario in anything but a Kart game. He's played out and needs a break.

My next games to play for GC: Metroid Prime (own it but haven't played it yet), Eternal Darkness and Pikmin most likely.

I think you may still be drunk Strangler. ;)

The game is called Animal Crossing. Animal Farm is a book written by George Orwell. (very good book by the way)

Thanks for the update, James Joyce, but I knew Animal Farm was a book by Orwell:) It was my poor attempt at literary humor.:(

Orwell is actually one of my favorite authors. 1984 was great as well as Animal Farm. I'm also a big fan of Kafka and Aldous Huxley.

I know I will. I liked OoT a lot, so I'll be sure to give it a rent and see for myself. As for buying games, I just unloaded $250 so I think i'll rent for a while.:D

Skies of Arcadia is from Dreamcast, and... since it's dead, I dunno if I would consider it a part of the Next Gen Consoles. Sure, the game was transferred to GC with *gasps* ONE MORE CHARACTER, but that doesn't change it to Next Gen, in my opinion.

But of course, that wasn't even your point. Which is why I still have to disagree... I own Skies on Dreamcast, and while I enjoy it, I've definately played better.

On the last note, since you can play PSX games on a Next Gen console, Suikoden II is the best, heh.
