Welcome to the first of many Dungeon-regulars, as I like to call them. Controlled Chaos is an area of ranting and expressing your concerns, outlooks, and any other forms of controversal opinions towards the world of gaming.
*these types of threads tend to lead to arguements due to difference in opinion. you can debate and express your opinion...watch the flaming, though. the ban stick will be at hand :devil2: ;)
I'll get things started.
Gamers flipping out over game reviews
Alright...I know people shouldn't generalize too much, but the hell with that. I've noticed over the past year or so that gamers insist on voicing their opinion on game reviews...most noticeably at the Cube IGN boards. Now, opinions are fine...they're good, actuallly. But some people walk up to the line of reason, take a crap on it, and proceed without checking their blind spots. I just happened to read Matt-IGN's thread at the cube boards about his official IGN review. Things started out pretty calm. "Nice review, thanks!" and "Great score :)". I then noticed that it was posted about about 5am EST and things could get a little nasty once the sun rose in North America. And I was right. People started flaming Matt, TELLING him that his scores (his OPINIONS) were wrong. One poor fellow actually started calling him a pansy and went into insults about Matt's physical appearance and stupid surname  I'll go into greater detail if you wish, I guess...Anyway, some of the posts include:
"Game over. It's official. Nintendo is doomed. I'm going to cry in my pillow for a couple of hours. A 9.6! Time to cancel my pre-order. Matt said the game ruled...translation 9.8 to 10.0. A 9.6!"
"Change it to 9.7. Now, bitch."
" mean it deserves a 9.8 atleast.......
Matt, if you are reading. You better give out reasons NOW and HERE why it became a 9.6
I want answers. And want them now....."
WTF? Do these people have severe chemical imbalances in their brains? Honestly, what the hell is wrong with these people? It's like he's insulting the very essence of each of their souls. First of all, the score is one man's opinion. Right? There's a decent chance that you may disagree with him. Secondly, the complaints seem to be about how the game should have been rated higher...when the review I looked at said 9.6. Last I checked, only a couple games a YEAR got that kinda score from sites like IGN. And then we get into the fact that people are whining and moaning about how the game deserves at least a 9.8 when they haven't even played it. That's right..."It's a Zelda game so it automatically deserves a higher score than any other of this generation of gaming. My head is up far too many asses and my underpants are 3 sizes too small"
ANYWAY...if you guys care to chime in, by all means be my guest. It's highly encouraged. If you have something on your mind (concerning gaming) that has little or nothing to do with this particular case, let's hear it. Just be somewhat careful as to what you say. This is Controlled Chaos, after all. At least that's what our intentions of it are ;)
why read other peoples scores if you (aheam, general you, meaning people) already have your own score opinionated and wont accept anyone elses.
you read reviews to see what other people think, not to see other people write down what you think.
(ahem, all general you's :p )

The people at the IGN boards are making me sick. I wasn't even going to bother looking at them, for I knew the predictable nature of fanboys, but dear God, some of the things they have said are truly terrible. One guy actually made a short review about Matt, saying this:
"Overall Comments
When we first got our hands on Matt, we just couldn't wait to see what it was like. The controls were not too bad. Grabbing his beard was what we expected. The gameplay is pretty much boring. How can we explain! As Matt Casamassina, first in its series of franchises, the franchise is no more. Don't expect even a decent one of this, kids.
Presentation
How can you even look at him? 1.0
Graphics
Rough look. Hairy. Smells so bad you can
even see it steaming in the way. Good Fog Mapping there.. We'll give him that. 2.0
Gameplay
Sorry, can't tell ya. Not fruity... 1.0
Sound
One of the most noisiest! Great sounding farts. Although, his farts are MIDI. 9.0
Lasting Appeal
Great! You can pick on him all you want. After awhile though, Matt kind of gets annoying. But it makes you keep coming back! 7.0
Overall Score 3.2"
Can people be so obsessed with video games and review scores that when someone has a different opinion, they would actually mock that person so horribly as this? Evidently, yes. This goes above and beyond the realm of critizism.
It truly makes me sick, but it's obvious that these people are either stupid, or have some serious growing up to do.

I agree some people do go too far when voicing their opinion on a review, but sometimes it can go too far. I personally sometimes think someones review is overrated/underrated. Recently was EGM's 9.5 for Zelda:Wind Waker. He only mentioned 2 minor things yet he had to drop it to 9.5. I've seen (IN MY OPINION) other games with more problems ie: GTA 3 (VC), yet EGM gave it all 10's. So I can see some people being pissed off when a game like Zelda doesnt get all 10's.

"Zelda games don't start with a 1.0 score, as most games do.
They start off by 9.0
So a 9.7 basicly is a 7."
Now, I'm not a huge Nintendo/Zelda fan, but I would really hope that none of you at GT feel the same way...........
.......
.....I'm bothered by the fact that I don't know if that's a rhetorical statement or not

Well, I got to agree with Stu on this one, it seems to happen with almost all of Nintendo's big games over there, if it was up to me, no game would have gotten more than a 9 yet, but eh.
Also, I don't get why people look at the final number at IGN (some other places as well), I mean it's not an average or even a recognization of seperate parts but as a whole package.
I mean if you look at IGN's score for Zelda and saw a 9.6, you would think the game is failry great and has minor problems, but the ones IGN do point out in the actual review do seem to be important (like the ending seuqence, use of the Wind Waker and well the dungeons, which doesn't bother me much but eh). Read the review and get the info you want from it, and it's not like IGn is the only one who has that opinion, it's reflected in the GameSpot review as well as the ones from GamePro, GameInformer and EGM.

 Yeah, anyway...I use reviews as a basis for why I buy game usually, but then after I complete the game, I disregard the review. A game is only as good as it is to me...I don't really care what someone else says...yep.

I don't know.... I think the most cryin I ever saw after a review was when gamespot exposed Splinter Cell's shoddy repetitive gameplay for XBOX and gave it a 8.9 or so... I guess you missed that Stu, thanks for catching the Nintendo fans again!

Those so called "fans" who diss Zelda for being "fruity" can eat a dick... as their opinion is irrelavant; due to the simple fact that they don't own a gamecube or the game.
Well neither do, but I plan on getting a GCN sometime in May.

Ohhh by the way in my opinion Splinter DOES suck... I think that if it wasn't an X-Box exclusive it wouldn't sell at the time it came out. I whole heartedly urge you people not to buy this game for your PS2s and GCNs.

meh, I don't see NEARLY as much whining on the xbox or ps2 boards. one guy (about zelda) even said:
"Most games get scored from 0 to 10
Zelda gets scored from 9 to 10 because it is so good
so 9.7 would be a 70%
That sucks!!!11 "
sadly, this individual was serious...

There are a lot more Nintendo Loyalists then there are PS2/XBox loyalists because one company has been around a lot longer maing games then the other 2 (duh), so its only natural to hear more bitching and moaning about a games score on say Gamecube than on PS2 or XBox.

Just because they have been around longer shouldn't let people bitch and complain about the scores, lol.

Didn't Splinter Cell get an 8.6, and not a 8.9 from Gamespot?
Anyways...
Splinter Cell for GCN may be a must for me (even though I have the Xbox version and no XboxLive :() simply because of the GBA version and the linkup dealie-hooyah-thingie, though I may just rent the GCN version to see how much better or worse looking the port is, unlocking my GBA stuff along the way.;)
As for this whole IGN thing, their entire forum (for any console) is full of idiots anyways, so this whole topic is mute.
I do think that most Nintendo Loyalists/fanboy/whatever really believe that Nintendo's quality extends into ALL games available for the system, even ports that you can see get ragged on in the source at the top of this thread.
But I must say that every review I've seen (barring a few perfect scores here and there) for a game by EAD that's very good, I've always agreed whether is was before or after I've read said reviews, but IMO, the games are really that good methinks....

the whole review topic seems to be dead right now, so I'll throw a couple new things into the picture:
System hating
Here's the deal: Most hardcore gamers I've encountered seem to always lean slighty towards a certain system (or company), or to desperately CLING to a certain system (or company). I know I'll have some people walking in here, chins up, saying "I am free of gaming bias". Yeah, you know the drill: Cut the crap and get off your high horse. I'm partial to Sony's PS2. Does this mean I will refuse to acknowledge other systems? No. Does this mean I grin each time I see the system doing well in sales? Yes. Does this mean I grin each time I see another system doing poorly in sales? Sometimes
What makes a person perceive one or more systems having a black cloud over it? Why will someone, whenever one gets the chace, throw in an either subtle or flagrant bash towards another system, or games of that system? Some of that is in me, and I see some of it in almost every other gamer on message boards, in gaming stores or in personal conversations. What gives?
Discuss.

Fanboys will always be around, and thats a sad thing, but at least sometimes we can get some humour out of it. :)
Why people will go to no end in order to make a video game system look bad is beyond me. In most cases, fanboys will merely prasie towards the system they own. They spent a lot of money on it, so they have to make it look good, or else they might feel like that money spent wasn't worth it. Even if they do enjoy most of the games on the system, they still feel the need to praise it to death while giving an evil glare to all other systems with tremendous passion.
Why bother? It takes effort to hate something, and to show that you hate it. You're going to be cast down anyway by the gamers who don't carry the attributes of the pathetic fanboyism, so why do they constantly try over and over again to make themselves heard? You don't need to make a 500 word essay on a forum talking about why your system is 100 times better than all else (basically explaining how much of a fanboy you are). To be a fanboy, all you need to do is say it once, or better yet, put a label on your forehead so that way we won't have to hear it all the time.
A fanboy's opinion never changes. It was biased in the beginning, and will remain biased as long as that person remains a fanboy.
They are missing out on great games that are exclusive to other consoles. You know what I say to that? HA! Serves you right for being the biased dumbass that you are.

I think its a good thing that there are fanboys. I mean, EDUCATED fanboys. I like to hear both sides of an opinion on something about each console. Kind of like how lately, there are activists for/against the war. I like to hear each sides opinions. But then there are people who are just plain dumb and say "My XYZ is teh RuLeZ!!!1" But I think fanboys are here to stay. Its impossible to eliminate the fanboy for each console. That is unless Microsoft brainwashes all of us into thinking MS only:D
