Following on the heels of British retail giant Dixons, Argos has announced plans to slash the price of Nintendo's GameCube in an effort to liquidate overstock. According to company representatives, Argos plans to cut the price on the console to a shockingly low 78.99 pounds ($124 USD). Reportedly, Argos executives are undecided as to whether to continue stocking the GameCube console and its software in the future. Speaking about the decision, Argos' marketing director Paul Geddes said, "Sales have been slow so we wanted to speed these up by selling it at a good price. We've got plenty of stock, enough to cope with demand. In terms of what happens after that, we haven't yet taken a decision on the format." For reference, retail chain Dixons is currently offering the GameCube for 99.99 pounds, a discount from its suggested 129.99 pounds retail price.

Now At this price they may move some units Shadow_Link! This is so low!!!!

heres more on the news from CVG

The magical tale of the ever-shrinking GameCube prices moves on apace with the latest champion GameCube outlet, Argos, flogging the purple cube for £78.99.
The best bit about this Argos promotion, is that the GameCube comes with a controller, memory card and a game choice from either Wave Race, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin or Eternal Darkness.

A snip at £78.99, that's £21 less than the current Dixons deal. Even better news is the price matching companies are forced to follow suit, so you should be able to get one from Comet or John Lewis at the same price for a similar deal, if you ask them nicely.

Also, as this Argos promotion runs until April 1 - no joke - if you buy a GameBoy Advance SP (for more than the Cube, bizarrely) you'll be able to get an additional £30 back - so it will work out at £50 for a GameCube, game and memory card - now you can't go wrong there.

At the time of press, the promotion has proved a huge success with Argos Direct, the internet sales side having sold out, and most of the shops running out or very low on stock after a tabloid press advertising blitz at the weekend. "You better be quick" said a store manager in Yorkshire when we cold-called, "I'm not sure if we've got any left."

Keep your eyes peeled for the never-ending cycle of cheapo GameCube promotions. Who knows, maybe they will be giving them away next week... Maybe with a GBA SP?

LoL why don't they just give the god damn thing away and be done with it! :D

Europeans are getting hugely cheap 'Cubes and they better get one while they last! I wish that would happen here so that I can get a friend of mine to get one since its a helluva deal.

Puppet, the article forgot to mention that if you get the GC for £78 with a free game and memory card, you can get any other game for half price :D.

I'll probably be getting my mits on a third cube once the GBA:SP comes out :D.

You can only do that if you cut down on the amount of pictures in your signiture to one (in your Old Skook account). PM Neo or something.

Catalogue Lords Argos's tactic of lowering the GameCube price to a ridiculous new level (£78.99 with a game and memory card) has seen sales of the little purpleston rocket.

According to the chain they sold 5000 Cubes on Saturday alone, which is a little better than the 100 they sold the week before. Stocks have practically been exhausted and unlucky, stinky punters have been sent away with nothing in their hands but sweat.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror 'Amy's I' column, Argos Marketing Director Paul Geddes had this to say: "We've struggled to keep up but cleared much of our overstock. It's been an unbelievable increase in demand. The previous Saturday we sold 100, this Saturday this leapt to almost 5000. We're replenishing stock all the time. If the current huge demand continues, stock will get very tight."

It doesn't take a genius to deduce that 5000 Cubes sold in one day at one chain is a large amount (about double the total weekly Cube sales nationwide over the last two months, in fact). Will this continue? Who knows? Not us. But get down to Argos soon if you want a bit of a pig-lickin' bargain.

Bloody hell, those are the sales of the cube in one chain for only one day :|.

What were you saying Puppet? ;) (Kidding!)
