Wow I didn't see that one coming :sneaky: I figured it was pretty obvious the console Castlevania game would be on PS2... And an issue or two ago some lead developer dude at Konami said that a new home console Castlevania game would come out in 2003, but he couldn't say for which console or anything so yeah...

I can't wait 'til E3! 2D or 3D? 2D OR 3D?!?!! Weeeee it better still have them yummy RPG elements even if it's 3D...

I heard it would be a combination of both....3D character models/backgrounds with 2D gameplay sounds appropriate...

2D or 3D? we'll find out at E3 ;)

*has flashbacks to N64 castlevania game*

I bet it's going to be like Contra... 3D graphics with 2D gameplay...

From Newtechnix:

"The new publication of PlayStation 2 Magazine (in addition to-Atlantic version) reveals the return on console of show of a mythical series of Konami, I named: Castlevania! The exit of this new opus is planned for the nearest autumn on the American territory. It will be carried out entiérement in 3d, what to give cold sweats to the fans which undoubtedly did not forget the mediocrity of the episodes Nintendo 64. But Koji Igarashi (producing of the series on Game Boy Advance) wants to be reassuring as for this new test of passage to the 3d, while specifying that the guideline of the development is to respect the spirit and the environment of the saga, new technologies being only to enrich there the gameplay. In the chapter of the revelations, will also know that a playable demonstration should be presented at the time of next E3. "

Remember that Iga had nothing to do with any of the N64 CV's... so this game has potential.

Remeber what all the nay sayer predicted for Metroid Prime... So I think it's gonna be good. It's either the downfall of the series or a new beggining.

I thought the N64 castlevania games were fine... *shrugs* SotN was a lot better, but I still enjoyed 64...

I've been saying since like the beginning of PS2 that I think a 3D castlevania game could still be great, ESPECIALLY if it has the SotN-like RPG elements... And they tried to make it sorta creepy... not like with a bunch of cutscenes and pop-out scares like in RE, but just atmospheric...

But a game like contra would be fine too... 3D graphics with 2D gameplay... But I'd rather them try full 3D again...

And they need more outdoor areas like Castlevania 2 on NES...

Konami is definately making the right decision by taking the series 3D on PS2...

2D games haven't sold well on next gen platforms...Contra did not fare well...Klonoa 2 didn't either (although I loved that game)...

I hope they can include some really fancy particle effects not unlike ZOE2 quality, stylish artwork and a stunning musical score backed by a top-notch orchestra. Konami has a few TREMENDOUS graphic engines for the PS2, so visuals shouldn't be a concern...gameplay should be the main objective. Ratchet and Clank uses a great 'rope-swing' type system...so the whole wip/chain swing can be done quite well in 3D.

Konami (or at least Kojima) is known, in many people's eyes, as the creater of the best 3D boss battles. MGS would be the best example. I can see much more interesting boss battles in a 3D Castlevania than in a 2D Castlevania.

And like DH said, they could easily include effective RPG elements. I haven't played SOTN, so I don't know how those worked, but leveling up and finding useful items could be well implimented.

Can't wait for E3 :)

Alucrud is the best Castlevania heroe EVER... he had a shield and sword... Also having multiple upgradable abilities, and weapons would help. This could be the next Metroid.

quote from the Konami press release:

"maximizing the processing power of the console, the ominous drama of the franchise will be realized through exhilarating action, a rich story, breathtaking environments, dazzling next-generation graphics and a sweeping musical soundtrack."

We didn't mean it literally... we mean a transition of a classic game from 2D to 3D with out losing the core gameplay and actually bringing new things to the table...

Exactly... Screw the whip thing, I liked SotN with a bunch of different weapons and shields and armors... Although I guess whips could be one of the weapons :D And I hope they have all kinds of neat special powers and stuff... but Alucard had them because he was a vampire/human person :( I want my Alucard back... :baby:

Exactly...and I agree with you. Next generation systems give development teams opportunities to take previous franchises and expand and evolve them. The trick is for the transition to be smooth and have the game stay true to its roots. The Mario franchise completely changed when it jumped to 3D (Super Mario World - Super Mario 64). Although a high quality effort, I never got as much from SM64 as I did from the brilliant 2D counterparts. Those are some lofty standards, though...But my main gripe was that the gameplay changed completely (another similar example would be Donkey Kong Country/Donkey Kong 64). 3D, free roaming platform games just haven't touched linear, 2D sidescrollers in quality up until Ratchet and Clank (IMO).
